yes, but often enough those two are seen as the one continent "America" and if you are gonna refer to those two combined why not use that term? All I said was it "looks weird" and it still does to me.

I haven't come across that before... when people refer to "America" they generally mean the US. I have heard "The Americas" many times, akin to "Eurasia", but more often than not there is a clear distinction between continents North America and South America.

Seems like English and therefore English speaking countries among other use the term "Americas" at least for a century. As they have recognize north and south as a continent each.

In other countries and/or many years ago it was regarded as a single continent named "America", as in "Columbus discovered America".

That's why the term "America" for both remains in some languages including German.
