Rebranded Mitsubishi Diamondtron, locally, for $15 or free if I can beat him. Picking it up later this weekend. This is a good monitor, no? I'm not really familiar with CRTs but I've been unhappy with gaming on every LCD I've tried so I'm going for it.

Who else is enlightened with the knowledge that the Chicago Blackhawks are about to take a second consecutive Stanley Cup? Because they are.

Or maybe Habs but I don't want to admit that possibility yet.

Got a real job/life for a while and lost interest in Quake/ESR/gaming for like two years. Bored though so maybe time to come back. Somebody broad stroke this shit for me though.

Does QL still have no NA players? Is it still shit?

Does the American CPM scene still consist of 12 dudes sitting in #uscmppickup?

Does p0rt still post retarded threads every 15 minutes of his waking life? Are militia jokes still funny?

I bought a Steelseries Rival, how dumb am I? It was cheap and comfy and I haven't been gaming much anyway.

Better mouse for MOBAs? (4 comments)
Posted by jstn @ 19:02 CDT, 14 March 2012 - iMsg
I've liked my abyssus for a while now, but I just started playing some LoL and the Dota 2 beta and I'm finding that the buttons are too stiff for RTS kind of stuff given how much more clicking I'm doing. Its tearing up my fingers/wrist.

Anyone know of a mouse similar to the Abyssus but with way lighter buttons?

For those that didn't play the first one, its kind of like a cross between tf2 and dota. The original is/was really fun, but had some shittiness going on balance-wise and was pretty much dead 3 months after it came out. The new one is supposed to have fixed the balance issues and made the metagame a lot deeper.

Fun break from Quake for those of us that hate sitting around right-clicking on shit in Dota/LoL/HoN.

Why are we doing this shit (169 comments)
Posted by jstn @ 11:18 CST, 6 January 2012 - iMsg
So, I didn't play Quake 3 (or video games, really) when it was in it's prime but lately I've switched over to it since I can't ping under 70 to any QL servers anymore. Why in the fuck are we even playing QL?

1. Persistent stats are more annoying than anything - they just cause people to play like assholes in an effort to preserve their accuracy and win ratio. Stuff like qlranks.com is awesome, dont get me wrong, but it could be done with q3 just as well. The actual in-game stats that are counting everything all the fucking time are what cause people to be idiots.

2. The few QL-only maps that are actually decent aren't enough to warrant staying there when we can just make whatever maps we want.

3. Fucking rockets feel *so good* in Q3. The knockback and pop-ups make it way more fun, since there are a shitload more opportunities for crazy over-the-shoulder flick air rockets. I thought I would hate it because I'm a noob, but the slower q3 rockets are a lot more fun and I can actually hit shit with them. In QL you put a rocket at somebodies feet and suddenly they weigh 30 tons.

4. I live in IL, and can ping 20 to Chicago like I should be able to. Not like QL where they get shitty routing from the shitty provider they use resulting in shitty pings for everyone involved, and then never acknowledge or comment on it. Being able to spawn servers anywhere in the world for much cheaper than it costs to lease a q3 server is nice, but ultimately kind of pointless when none of the locations are capable of providing you a ping that's actually fun to play with.

5. CPM is way more fun than PQL

6. It doesn't really cost anything to play on most servers, and Quake3 with CPMA and cnq3 really doesn't take more than 15 minutes to get set up if you're not retarded. The only trouble with it is that the game is so dead it can be a pain in the ass to find all the shit you need to download. This would be easy to fix. We could just package up everything needed into one big zip file (minus the actual q3 pak, if you care about being legit with a 13 year old game I guess) and host it somewhere prominently. You would pretty much just have to extract it to wherever you want and go. If you want a legit cd-key so you can play on the few servers that still check it, you can get one for a cheap one-time fee that you don't have to re-up every year for the cost of a brand new, triple-A title.

7. GTV - quakelive is never going to get it.

8. RA3 (to be fair, I've never played this since I'm about 10 years late to the party here, but it sounds like fun)

9. Mods. Mods everywhere

The only compelling argument I have for staying in QL is that it has a much higher active population right now. But that's just like saying we're all playing QL because we're all playing QL. Fast-paced deathmatch games are more or less commercially dead, which Quakelive has shown us. At least with Q3 the community can take it upon themselves to continue supporting and developing the games, and keeping the genre alive. These games aren't profitable anymore, so when you put a for-profit company in charge of them, you end with the mess that is Quakelive: a bunch of people halfway satisfied with an ok game that will never get any better because its being maintained by three fucking people that probably have better shit to do anyway.

Planar SA2311W (15 comments)

Anybody used one of these?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824016168

Its pretty much between the Planar or the Benq for me, since a 2233rz is impossible to find new in NA for some reason (except from shady sites that I don't trust). The Benq is about $40 more. There's also a Viewsonic that can be found everywhere for way cheaper, but the stand looks like a flimsy piece of shit and I don't think it has VESA mounts or anything (never again).

Russian-English keycaps? (10 comments)
Posted by jstn @ 13:41 CDT, 8 September 2011 - iMsg
Any of you guys know where I can buy replacement keycaps for a cherry mx board that have both Russian and English characters?

I'm starting Russian this semester as my foreign language requirement for my degree, and I figure I might as well immerse myself in it as much as possible so that I can learn the basics quickly. I could just buy another keyboard, but I'd rather not have to switch back and forth. My desk is crowded enough as it is.

What's up with this map not being played anymore? I had a game on it last night and it seemed balanced as fuck. You have to be really thinking and paying attention to control MH and RA at the same time, and with only one yellow you're forced to play much smarter out of control.

Did everyone hate it for some reason? Seems like a great map.

Deathadder Firmware? (3 comments)
Posted by jstn @ 01:14 CDT, 30 August 2011 - iMsg
Just grabbed a DA on the way home from work today to try it out. Nice so far, stock feet blow ass though. Had to use the last of my mousetape on them.

I've noticed a bunch of updated firmware floating around Razers site - is this necessary? I haven't really noticed any problems with it yet other than the crappy feet. Granted I only played with it for about an hour tonight. Its the newer 3500dpi one, if that makes a difference. Currently using it at 450dpi/500hz.

Last time I updated firmware on a Razer product was with my blackwidow and it nearly bricked, so I'm hesitant to try it out.

another WMO/IME thread, sorry (16 comments)

Is there any difference with all the different colored models out there? Looking at a few IME's on eBay right now, some are white, some are gray, some are black/dark grey.

Found a really good deal with one of the lighter gray IME's and a black WMO that I might be able to snag for like 10$ if I'm lucky (used, but w/e).

Picture of the pair I'm looking at:

First time doing any sort of video editing whatsoever, plus I suck at videogames.

Feedback? Don't make fun of the intro, its just a placeholder since someone else is going to do that part for me. It is also going to be about twice as long as soon as I find a second song to use, right now it just kind of cuts off at the end.

/edit: In retrospect, I might have gotten a bit carried away with the blurframe shit. I was really excited the first time I saw it rendered.

Recommend a mouse? (60 comments)
Posted by jstn @ 01:21 CDT, 10 June 2011 - iMsg
I've been googling around and everything I find has some major problem. Idunno, maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places. Currently using a CM Sentinel Advance because I'm an idiot, and it was the only thing I could get within 15 minutes of my last mouse breaking.

I need:
lightweight
small/medium size
really high perfect control speed (i use about 51cm/360)
preferably $60 or under
easy to hold on to (as in picking it up to re-center, current Sentinel Advance is fucking horrible about this)

Don't need:
more than 400-800 dpi
87 buttons (three is plenty)
dumb fucking lights

Kinzu looks perfect, except for the accel problems.

Zowie EC2 looks perfect, except every review says its built like a piece of shit. Plus it seems like it should be a lot cheaper than it is.

Mx518 is indestructible, cheap, and great for low-sense. But its heavy.

Xai looks good as well, but I'm not spending $90 on a mouse unless its the greatest mouse ever built and will last me for 10 years. That price-point seems retarded to me, unless using this mouse is like the second coming of Jesus or something.

In a perfect world, Kinzuadder. But I really don't want to buy two mice and then chance fucking both of them up. Plus I haven't soldered shit in around two years now, who knows how rusty I've gotten by this point.

Puretrak codes? (9 comments)

I've heard there are some 25% and 35% discount coupons for Puretrak floating around out there. Found a smaller one just Googling around, but I'm not ordering the pad until Friday, so I figured it couldn't hurt to ask if anyone has one they'd be willing to part with.

Trying to buy a Puretrak Talent. Only place I can find is direct from their site.

I've noticed a lot of people play at really low resolutions rather than native. Is there some reasoning behind this? I read a Cooller interview the other day and he said he had switched to r_mode 5 (640x480 or something like that) 0_o

Mousepad rippling? (10 comments)
Posted by jstn @ 12:48 CDT, 17 May 2011 - iMsg
I have a CM storm mousepad (was the only oversized option at my local place, seemed similar to a Qck+), and its starting to develop ripples in the center. I've had for a little under a year. Is this common, or is there anything I can do to correct it?

Its not really that bad to where its affecting my aim yet, but I'm sure its going to get worse. Pretty broke right now, don't want to have to replace it, but I'm open to suggestions. Need something

a)durable
b)cloth
c)huge (really low sens)

Duel channel? (36 comments)
Posted by jstn @ 01:27 CDT, 15 May 2011 - iMsg
Is there a pickup channel for duels in NA that's active?

Trying to find players around my skill level, but I'm tired of getting stuck playing guys with 86% win rates earned by exclusively slumming the lower-skill servers. :/

I spent an hour trying to play one goddamn game tonight, and instead ended up playing two idiots who are apparently terrified of playing a match that they don't have a %100 chance of winning.

measure mouse speed (10 comments)

Is there any software out there that can measure mouse movement speed in IPS or m/s? Been googling around looking for something but cannot come up with anything. One program claimed to do it in km/h, but my antivirus shit bricks when I went to download it. : /
