The Quake-RTS Project (80 comments)
Posted by Memento_Mori @ 12:49 CDT, 30 May 2015 - iMsg
A few months ago, Portugal Ins and I started a little project, and while it's far from finished, I think it's at a point where we can show it to the community.

The goal of the project is to explore game design, and in particular try to create a real time strategy game that presents the decision making proper of Quake duel, while abstracting everything that has to do with execution mechanics. We see as ultimate ambition the creation a game where people can explore and understand the meta game of dueling, with concept such as map control, weapon selection, and aggressive/defensive play as explicit elements. Whether we can reach that or not, is up in the air, but we are happy to learn trying to get there.

Why do we share this now? Mainly because we would like to receive feedback on what is there, and collect ideas about how the combat should work. We have some ideas already, but it's good to see things from different angles, even if we end up with a particular design that not necessarily please everyone.

Another EU team at Quakecon 2015 (164 comments)
Posted by Memento_Mori @ 16:08 CDT, 22 March 2015 - iMsg
Soon after 'Averagers' annoucing their participation to Quakecon 2015, another European team was formed, with a very interesting players roster:

The team is currently looking for official sponsorship, but might ask for community support if that does not work.

Fazz at Quakecon 2015 (229 comments)
Posted by Memento_Mori @ 10:43 CST, 26 January 2015 - iMsg
Quakecon 2015 has been recently announced, and players are starting to arrange their trips to take part in what - for the moment - looks like being the only major event for Quake Live in 2015.

Tonight, Sweden Pelle "fazz" Söderman announced on his stream that he will be going to Quakecon, and participate in the tournaments there. The specific formats are yet to be revealed, but rumors talk about the traditional Duel Masters plus a Team focused tournament.

Fazz is an old school player, with good performances in both duel and TDM. His last apparitions were at Lan Prague, where Sweden 4 old men arrived 2nd cup_silver, beaten by the Russian powerhouse Russia deliberate murder, and at the 125FPS Showmatch agains his countryman Sweden Spart1e which resulted in a 4-3 for fazz.

The participation of fazz to this tournament is sponsored by Switzerland Memento_Mori, who last year supported Belgium Romain "dem0n" Leclercq in his trip to Quakecon.

FOV in FPS Games (4 comments)
Posted by Memento_Mori @ 04:14 CST, 30 November 2014 - iMsg
I found these videos which I considered very well made. The information might be old for some people, but it's still a nice watch.

It touches the problem of headache resulting from the wrong combination of FOV, screen size, and screen distance to the player, relating that to the use of our peripheral vision.

Some duels with live commentary (31 comments)
Posted by Memento_Mori @ 13:44 CDT, 26 October 2014 - iMsg
Hello,

I made two videos of a few duels I played today. The format is different from previous videos I made, as I really kept the editing to zero (just recorded and uploaded). But the nice thing - I believe - is that you see exactly what I think at the very moment.

The sound quality (of the microphone) is pretty bad, and you can hear the loud keyboard. It's generally bad, except for when you can hear some dodging madness.

My hope is that some people find this useful somehow.

Hacker game mode coming? (44 comments)
Posted by Memento_Mori @ 05:38 CDT, 28 September 2014 - iMsg
Rumors say, the following game mode is being tested and may be added to the game.

The goal is to make the game more friendly to newbies and give them some features they are used to find in other games, but the hope is that older players will like it too.

---=== The Hacker Mode ===---

The game plays like classic FFA.

One player is randomly selected as the 'hacker', and he will be given wallhack, humanized auto-aim, timer hack, etc which he will use at his discretion. Nobody knows who the hacker is except for the hacker himself.

The game mode has a hidden points system, which at the end of the match are revealed, converted to frags (1 point - 5 frags), and added to the score to determine the actual winner. A player has to decide how much focus to put on the traditional making frags, and how much on making points. So in a way, the classic mode is still there.

Points are made via accusation votes: at any point in time, any player can call a vote to accuse somebody to be the hacker. Unlike normal votes, these expire after 5 seconds and require a minimum of 3 participants to be valid.

As you can see, the mode gives newbies the chance to get exposed to advanced concepts such as gathering consensus on witch hunts, successfully hiding cheats, etc. which according to data collected, is one aspect where newbies struggles most when trying Quake Live for the first time.

My hardcore Quaker soul cringes a bit seeing our game to move in these new directions, but I realize evolution is the only hope to keep our beloved game alive, and therefore I welcome this news with mild skepticism and the hope that it's for the best.

TDM Lan in Belgium: Yes or No? (48 comments)
Posted by Memento_Mori @ 08:22 CDT, 13 August 2014 - iMsg
Dear fellow Quakers, it's time to decide.

As you know, the Prague lan had to be canceled due to the district internet cafe closing. We have discussed alternative proposals, and it appears that the most concrete option at this stage is to host a TDM LAN in 2014 is to take part in Storm 14. More information on how we arrive here is in the previous news post.

The only missing thing now is a consensus among the community. Are we doing this or not? Let's speak our mind, and settle this. Please vote here (poll) until Sunday 17th.

Eye Tracking Test (67 comments)
Posted by Memento_Mori @ 12:25 CDT, 23 June 2014 - iMsg
Hello,

my brother works with eye trackers, and was visiting the other day, so we did a little experiment and made a video that shows where my eyes are actually looking as I play the game.

http://youtu.be/KQXv88njIIs

* the red dot is a post production effect, you don't see it when playing *

I did not have too much time to review this, but one thing to say is that the match itself is probably not so good, as I played a bit brainlessly, without timing or thinking much.

I am trying to get one tracker for myself, which I could bring to the prague lan, and maybe ask some better player to wear it during some of the matches. The setup is relatively comfortable and light, and should not be too hindering, but ofc, maybe some people don't really want to do this as it may affect their performance.

Anyways, I thought it was a cool thing to try so I shared it. If you have ideas related to this, go ahead.

Alternative to uniform projection fov (43 comments)
Posted by Memento_Mori @ 12:17 CST, 16 February 2014 - iMsg
By default, Quake supports configuration of the field of view, but regardless of the value, the projection is always uniformly mapped onto the screen.

The effect is, that at high fov, the portion of screen dedicated to where the crosshair is aiming results small, and the opponent looks far away.

You can see the effect of an alternative mapping here:
http://strlen.com/gfxengine/fisheyequake/compare.html

Th creator is using the equivalent of a fish eye lens. If you compare 150 fov, you immediately see how much better such distribution is, as what you are aiming at stays sort of the same size and perceived distance but on the side you have much more information.

Technically, this was done withing software rendering, but there is a solution for GPU as well, which is a bit more expensive than traditional projection, but not too bad, and could be implemented in QL.

I wonder what people think about this.

A Duel Guide for CA Players (147 comments)
Posted by Memento_Mori @ 10:21 CST, 2 January 2014 - iMsg
This Quake Live guide targets primarily Clan Arena players who are or may be interested in playing Duel. I'm writing it as I've been seeing more and more players willing to start playing duel, but having troubles with the initial steps. As most come from CA, I felt like making a guide like this, with the hope it will prove useful to some players.
