well, let's put it this way: he can be an ass, ignore ztn, make it for the 'fame' of it, bragging rights, and whatnot, OR he can be a dedicated guy with a real portfolio of nice maps, ask ztn, get permission, and redo the map

D3 did NOT look good, the models were low poly and the textures werent good either, it just had tons of bump mapping to hide the shit models/texures and imo bump mapping loocks crap, fake and plasticy

when people are going to remake maps id wish they would do as swelt does and start from the ground up, the map will need to be changed in its layout slightly so it actually works with q4. not just a copy paste. or in this case not even making the architecture himself.

Exactly what conversion means! Do you think ZTN started from scratch on Bloodrun for Q3? He prolly imported his old work from QW days and changed it a bit. As O'dium did with q3dm6 for Quake 4 as Zeicon did with Bloodrun now. Even the Raven guys prolly loaded q2dm1 into their editor and changed the geometry.

Why would anyone reinvent the wheel, at least not if you want to keep the whole map more or less the same.

I don't know much about the Q3/Q4 editors, but when useing some proper 3D modeling software, you select the entire set .. and you scale it. You just import the basic geometry, scale, modifie, retexture, etc.

I might also add, that it's not always the point of a remake to play exactly the same as the previous version. But I agree that the map should be in proportions to acomodate the player model.

Cut the crap. There's a 'convert -format map' command in q3map2 since like forever and people have been stealing maps since q2. Whoever gives a shit what ztn says. He's not using his textures or anything besides the layout. What will ztn do, sue him for copying over numbers that dictate brush size and positions? lol I'm assuming this dude isn't from US so whatever law you have there regarding copyright won't work.

Yes, I am from Switzerland and I am not talking about laws. I am just pointing out the fact that ZTN himself said to another guy that he should stop his work. For me, this seems like a clear indication that he doesn't want to have his maps ported over to Quake 4, at least not by other people. Therefore, It seems logic that one does not port it over unless one asks him or he does it himself. There shoud be a kind of respect to the mapper, but it seems Zeicon lacks that respect. Sad to see such things towards a guy who created very good maps.

That must have been some overzealous fan playing the police. I don't mind people making their own versions of my maps as long as they are releasing them under their own name. I appreciate if they ask first, but that really doesn't change anything, does it? If the map turns out to be bad, it'll be forgotten in 2 seconds... if the map's good, then *I* can use the new ideas and make my own version.

im positively surprised about your attitude towards this, so kudos there. I can defend zeicon though, im positive that he doesnt give a shit about fame and such and just wants to play on ztn, as he used to be a moneywhore (still is?) that only carred about quake if there was a cash prize involved, though if there was, he would for sure be a top candidate to grab the them, like that swedish tournament where he was the only foreigner, got to the finals and met a fazz in his prime then lost and came in second. just to defend the powerrider :D

I received an email from someone the other day was approx 75% of the way through remaking one of my maps without permission, and then he decided to ask me if it was ok.

Let's put my response this way - he's no longer making it.

ANYONE who chooses to remake someone else level should ALWAYS seek permission before even starting the level!!! Where the hell is the honour in the Quake community these days?

Most newbies have NO respect for others and will blatantly rip off other peoples work without blinking twice. This is DIGUSTING.

This map SHOULD NOT BE RELEASED. You are ripping off a very talented mapper who has given the community some amazing work over the years, and this is how you reward him?

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter whether you are a mapper or not, and whether your intentions are good or not. WAIT FOR THE MAPPER TO AUTHORISE YOUR WORK OR DONT RELEASE IT.

You should be ashamed of yourself.

Remaking the map is one thing. Porting the map is another. If the map design isn't changed at all, I don't see why get all upset about it. Remodelling a map that is known to be good by it's design isn't hard at all.

Remaking the map and porting the map are no different in principle within the context of this topic - one is releasing another person's work without seeking permission. It is akin to theft.

What amazes me is that this would never have happened in the old days of QW and Q2. It is the "new" breed of gamers who seem to be doing this. It appears the days of mappers having respect from players for their hard work is coming to an end.

One of the reasons I decided to become a mapper was because of the appreciation that players gave to level makers - I thought that was a really nice and honourable thing, a real community thing and a just reward for a level designer who's worked hard to bring something to players that they can enjoy.

Now look at ZTN and his contribution to the community? Is this how he gets rewarded? It's not very fair.

PS - Yes I made the CPMA version of Aerowalk on behalf of Preacher.

If you can't deal with the fact that people can recreate your maps any way they want without being put behind bars, perhaps you should find another "profession". Stop being so fucking possessive. The map was created for the community in the first place so in a sense it belongs to the community... it's freeware and I wasn't making money off of this remake. And I'm not a newcomer... have been playing since QW...

The map being ported to another the game is a reward imo. It has been played since Q1, it's a winner... Honestly, I wouldn't want to ask permission to anyone just to play a make a map in Q4. Everyone knows who's the author behind the design, so what's the point, it's not like he's taking credit for it...

I see no harm there, as credit is being given where it's due, but hey, that's just me...

I did it over the course of a few days just to get familiar with the editor and play some private duels with friends...that room is about all that's completed (the rest is basic geometry). I dont plan on finishing it or releasing it.

I've since started on an entirely new map...so watch this space :)

It does seem a tad smaller in Q4 (only slightly)... and I have made some modifications to some of the hallways so you don't bump your head into the ceiling when you jump around :> Anyway, the main reason it seems small in that picture is that I'm not standing on the floor, but on the ledge by the stairs leading into MH, i guess...
