MI5 you can apply to as a 'normal' job, it deals with homeland security and some types of crime. MI6 is invite only and deal with foreign intelligence and spying. To enter SAS selection you need to have been in the British armed forces for about 3 years.

and u need to be either a) able to eat nails and ask for seconds, or b) work out pie to 10 million decimal places in ur head.

he is the longest serving member of the sas (23 years)
it goes into all the political reasoning behind it all, its a real eye opener.

Usually they pick SAS members from the royal marine commandos, as they are some of the most highly trained troops in the world in the world,(UK equal to the navy seals/marine recon)

usually you apply to the SAS after serving for a few years at least as someone said, but being in a a highly trained assault force before would help before joining the SAS/SBS(special boat service) , and so on.

SAS is made up of about 80% paras, its SBS who are virtually all ex marines, you do need 3 years ish to attempt to join, and they will let anyone attempt selection.

There are also 2 territorial army wings to SAS, and anybody at all can attempt selection with them. 1 is in London the other In manchester

There probably wouldn’t be much difference what division you joined either from (paras or marines) in the end the SAS are looking for highly trained and highly fit people who they can train special tactics and so on to.

But naturally the next step up from marine commando would be the SBS, although the marines are more highly trained than the paras in a lot of ways such as mountain combat, beach assult, even general fitness, but they are looking to train them anyway so .. (theres a lot of debate about which is "better" on various forums)

But as you said a lot of SBS members come from the royal marines, but so do a fair amount of SAS members. Although yes I forgot that a lot of SAS members do come from the paras.

In the end, the SBS are just as elite as the SAS, they only difference is, the SAS has had more publicity and most of the public are naive about the SBS.

the TA SAS reserves you can apply to, if you have 3 or more years experience in the armed forces, and that’s just to give you a chance, they don’t accept applications afaik unless you have previous military experience.

you can join 23 and 21 sas with no experience at all amazing as it seems,

Thats pretty weird, they probably only accept other people if they have previous experience in other areas... but who knows, they never speak of the SAS/SBS.

But the reason is they actually like people with no other military training mainly because they have not been contaminated with other opperating procedeurs, so they teach everything they want you to know in their way.


There does seem to be a conflict whereby if your in the army you have to wait 3 years, but if your not, you dont have to wait at all.

no you dont have to be british, but hey do background checks and big ones at that, the most important thing you need is incredible fitness and endurance, mental and physical. and although it may look exciting you spend loads more time being knackered and bored.

the SBS have the same training and entry requirments as the SAS, plus they have to do Marine type things, diving, etc... thats why theyre better!

firstly bro i gotta comment on the stuff you wrote so here goes...FIRSTLY, directing staff at hereford dont pick candidates for selection, candidates do roughly 3 years in the regs with their parent unit and then if their oc thinks they have the stuff that troopers are made of they let them do it...SECONDLY....on nearly every selection course 70% of applicants are paras and the rest are maybe made up of guards, green jackets and other regular infantry (so this nearly all marines is a figment of either yours or someone elses imagination), although it is true that the commando course is the longest basic training course in the british forces it is very well set out but from personal experience and conversations with other squaddies P-COMPANY (pre parachute training) is alot more intense and designed to make future airborne soldiers perform under stress to their maximum capability. i dont want to sound like a know it all but i have served in the army, have mates still serving with the pathfinders platoon & 22 and have a good few friends who are attached to 23 sas (TA) based in leeds....i hope my comments have shed some light on your views in the future!

can you tell me where it says that "british royal marines" are equal to us navey seals and marine force recon ? also that marines are trained better than paras and in most cases fitter ?, if your ever thinking of joining any branch of the british forces you gotta wise up bro, (if there's any ex squaddies reading this they should agree with me on this) your army or navey recruiter will promise you the world but when you start your basic training the nco's will tear you a new arsehole faster than you can say P.V.R lol,ill end it here by saying whatever branch of our army that goes to a conflict we have the best trained forces in the world and should be very proud of all branches, regs & corps ;)

That's Andy McNab. A wonderful author, I've got like 5 books of him, such a wonderful writer and he use the language that suits the novels. I recommend his books like, "Last Light", "Firewall", "Remote Control" and another book that takes place in Cannes and Monte Carlo, can't remember the name of it, but that's his best book. Maybe beacuse I love the French Riveria but still...

Andy mcnab may appear to be the hero with chris ryan, but what about philip vance who they put the blame on, he died during Bravo Two Zero. In fact Mcnab and Ryan may not be totally to blame but there statements do not add up when compared nor is some of the information about there hold up in the desert true. Each of there books explains different factors that are not SAS protocol.
Chris Ryan explains that Philip Vance was unexperienced but had already served with the speical air service for 9 years before hand where as Ryan for only a few.

Those saying that SBS is better than SAS and visa-versa need not compete!!!! The SBS are fully trained to carry out land operations but the bulk of their work is insertion and extraction for SAS operatives. Also although the SBS are special boat service, alot of the SBS are trained to pilot helicopters, so they dont all get their feet wet :)

SBS might be good, SAS might be great, but when it comes to avoiding being seen, nobody does it better than noel edmunds, anyone seen him lately?
