Do you really want the old banshee sound again? We should be making vehicles QUIETER, NOT LOUDER. And yes, that includes sports cars/motorcycles.

That said, F1 has never been less entertaining to me. No amount of loudness can fix the huge cars and the endless tire management.

I never was really interested in F1, though once in a while i was watching it when i was younger. But i always found it cool how the cars sounded. I could not even imagine that F1 cars might sound in any other way. I am shocked to find out that they changed this. Imagine they use another ball in Tennis, which just completely eleminates the iconic sound of a Tennis ball being hit by a racket.

I showed a cockpit camera from Michael Schuhmacher to my son and he was like 'JAAAAA' after a while. Later when he went to sleep he was imitating the sounds of a passing F1 car. It is not a banshee sound, it is an engine in aggressive agony, being way over the top and trying to kill everything around it. It creates fear in those who hear it. It impresses people.

But you might far deeper into the sport than i am. I am just a casual. And the sound of a V10 is music to my ears. One reason i would watch it.

Now in my late years, there's little I loathe more than unnecessary loud vehicles and the people who operate them.

Old F1 cars used to sound like that because of the high revs. New ones don't need as high revs.

Sound is part of racing. Look at Formula E, it sounds like retarded RC cars.

People have been complaining that new cars are ugly and sound bad in f1 since the dawn of time. Each year. Your favorite f1 cars are ugly abomination in eyes of someone who got into it few years earlier.

It’s more about the QC comparison and that they even implemented abilities into F1 which i find hilarious regarding the comparison because it makes it really complete.

And it’s also cool to see that there are many many passionate people who do not like the new F1. when i read the comments from them i knew how they are feeling. Its the same story we had.

It gets worse progressively so when you compare several years of difference you can see the sound from 2002 compared to 2021, just look at the videos.

If this is what you take out of it. It's a very conservative mindset - past was the golden ages, everything gets worse. Not judging, just observation.

I went to qualifying at the British GP back in the early 2000s, and I remember that the TV simply doesn’t capture the sound of the cars, or give a scale of just how damn loud they are..

It’s probably still the same - I imagine that lower sound probably goes right through you in person.

Quake analogy - are you playing with a pro level noise cancelling headset so you can track player positions accurately, or just using a monitor’s cheap built in speaker? If the later, then your views on sound quality don’t count.

I think i never heard them live. I only read that they were so loud that you would need ear plugs. You might or you are hopefully right that the cars today still sound impressive, because i really want them to show to my son.

Regarding Quake, it reminds me of the rocket sound of Q3/QL compared to that of QC. ;D

I went to a couple of them live in Spa mid to late 90s, had been fortunate to always be at fantastic seating positions (old VIP seats and the grand stands at eau rouge and la source) and I agree as well, the sound was spectacular and VERY loud. It is one of the most impressive things I've ever heard, especially when you see the speed and traction while they are generating that sound.

I went back a couple of years ago and they are still very loud but the absolute fiendish brutality of previous generations F1 cars has subdued.

To my ears it now sounds more like modern and precise engineering compared to high octane combustion and immense power blocks they slapped in it back in the 90s. It's almost like hard rock vs metal in a way. Even if you don't like metal, it just sounds much more raw and aggressive compared to rock.

Anyway, while the modernrefinement brings a lot of advantages to the sport, ultimately, in a way it also kills some of the emotion attached to it.

I guess motorsport fans world wide are really looking forward to the sound of electric vehicles :-))

true and i was not following it. it was only that idea of super fast racings cars that was branded into my mind. it is crazy that such a seemingly stable concept of my life changed. it is like somebody changed the color of the leaves to blue. and you thought, colors of leaves? they are greeeen!!!

From an engineering perspective, are more efficient engines quieter? With perfect efficiency, you would assume an engine would run very quietly and have very little waste heat...

The irony is that's what happens on modern "muscle" cars, and the car manufacturers have to find artificial ways to make the engines sound "bigger."

No, quiet means exhaust restrictions, so less efficient. The crucial point here is the male perspective that the song and volume are not the same thing.

Except no, it doesn't. You can build mufflers for whatever flow you need, it's simply a huge waste of weight in racing. So you're right but also wrong ;)

And of course he's also right, you can make an engine that produces zero power but lots of noise (think: the old American muscle cars), and making them more efficient goes hand in hand with less waste heat, therefore less fuel and air, therefore less exhaust noise for the same usable power (also modern crank and manifold design which helps flow does reduce those farts which make Americans hard).

Of course the problem is we will never achieve good efficiency from this technology (yes, F1 claims they can now do 50% efficiency, which, if true, is absolutely amazing for an ICE, but still...)

Anyways, the cars are more powerful than ever and they still keep nerfing them. They kind of have to, otherwise we'd have multi-kilowatt engines already ;)

Not to mention, F1 teams actually had several options and decided on this turbo design one by one.

Also, they want to bring the technology back on the street. As far as i understood this, this is also a huge factor for choosing to have V6 engines? They also are hybrid, meaning they also are having an electric motor.

Lovely theory, now show me 10 examples where putting mufflers increases power. Also if you have no problem adding dead weight you should keep quiet on american cars, lest I remind you that while they were listening to V8s, you were listening to 2-strokes. And now diesels...

PS. When they were fapping to their V8s gargling like a butchered pig choking in its own blood (which those engines basically were), we had V12 Ferraris which yes, were obnoxiously loud, but the sound was smooth like butter. Now they're putting inline 4s in Mustangs (and they're fast, I actually start to want one now), so I hope this issue is settled? :)

I find it funny there is so much money available for racing to sponsor these teams, if you take a look what these cars cost, and the drivers salaries, its quite insane, and there are not too many people watching that to justify this imho. ... compare that to a lot of amateur sports ... I dont see how u can make a profit in racing as a sponsor ...
that being said, F1 is boring af ... how it is still a competition when one guy possess a car thats better will always be a riddle to me ... you are right about the sound, but this is not too much of a problem imho. ... same could be said as well about cycling btw ... before they were racing without helmets and you could still see the faces of cyclists, and they also had beautiful steelframes with chrome and pantos ... now just carbon mold bikes that basically look all the same and drivers with helmets and glasses where you dont recognize anyone ... and now you also know they are doping :-(, which makes it a bit similar to the engine advantages in F1

Cyclist shave legs, so that's metrosexual enough, but nothing beats football where people constantly drop dead and roll in pain from someone passing them without even touching. GAAAAY!

(Enduro is a great motorsport to watch, that stuff is no bullshit, all skill, basically it's Quake and Taddy is Cooller)

Yeah, footballers lie around in the soft grass for minutes for nothing and cyclist fall hard onto the street and immediately get up and continue with bruises etc. ... this practice in football is ridiculous, and imho. not really moral strenthening, it engraves into people that it is advantageous to have a victim mindset and talk so much about all your problems that are made up for the most part to get additional bonus points ... all these enduro races have camera and presentation problems imho. ... it would be cool to have some cockpit view with car driver and codriver the whole time for example ... on youtube you just see these compilations, they are ok, but noone really watches a full replay or something ... in the end this enduro stuff (car, motorbike, downhill bike, etc.) suffers from not having a direct opponent, and just racing against time, everyone doing his own thing is just not so interesting to watch ...

No way, in my kind of enduro they all go at the same time (well, in rows, but the actual high level stuff is first row anyways, and there's always a lot of amateurs who get stuck on the first climb for 2 hours ;)), overtake each other a lot, and even a minute of time difference can disappear instantly, and hell, sometimes not only there's a "direct opponent", they even help each other when someone gets stuck, it's pretty awesome. I remember watching https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N39eM-I8VP4 - check out 2:10:00 (remember: you can't push the bike and no spectator is allowed to help, but other riders are). This is a million times better to watch than F1, when the only overtaking happening nowadays is by pit stops or if a car breaks.

What you're thinking about is rally, and yes, there's nothing to watch when there's a minute between each vehicle and you're just comparing numbers on the screen, or in WRC, there's always a scoreboard for longest jumps even though there's no points for that (I hope), because that's the only interesting thing ;) But that has nothing to do with enduro, which is really good to watch!

While trying to figure out what you meant, I learned that Americans have "enduro" rallies, but they also call handegg "football", so I can see the source of confustion, but let's not let them confuse us!

Look at it like this.

usain bolt covers over 10m a second when at full speed over 100m
usain bolt does not even reach 30 MPH.
If the average man raced usain bolt over 100m, they would probably be 40m-50m behind and that's just against a guy who cant reach 30mph over a measly 100m.

An F1 car reaches speeds over 220 MPH and races for over 200km!
Can you imagine the free distance people like lewis are getting over that much distance, you're talking 100's if not 1000's of meters.

Imagine starting every race knowing you go that distance for free over nearly everyone else?

Same need to push it hard in the most dangerous areas?

At least in rallying you got so much variation in the racing physics its likely the better car will not be enough to win it without insane talent behind the wheel.

It happened lots of years ago.

F1 peaked in the Senna days, it got downhill from there. That era had the perfect tech and human balance.
