lol, I guess most people only touched this game because of curiosity,
I cant imagine a single person in this world ever played this game for fun ... yeah some coders tried some things here and there and even did gfx ports, but I higly doubt anyone ever played it for real

I've played it since the mid90s, ascended it with the easy classes: Barbarian, Valkyria and Samurai. Another newish good game in the genre is ADOM.

Good to know some people play these type of games ;-)

For shooter genre alone: HL2 blew me away

If HL2 blew you away then you haven't played many quality sp games.

HL2 was severely underwhelming for me, alright story, alright graphics, gimmicky motion physics which even for the time were just eh.

Severely overrated game which I don't ever care if we get a sequel to.

of course there are better games storywise, but those "gimmicky motion physics" were the first time where it was superbly done in a mainstream game so it was a big deal. graphically too, that engine made a BIG impact.

Finally, a lot of people are waking up and calling HL2 for what it is: probably the most overrated game.

The story is a mess and at the same time completely forgettable. The gameplay is bad even for 2004 standards: Far Cry blows it out of the water, both gameplay and graphics wise, and its from 2003.

The only thing its got going is the physics engine, but that's like you said, just a gimmick. The physics aspects are really forced down your throat. Remove the physics aspects and nobody would even remember the HL2 name. Which is mostly remembered for the HL3 meme anyway.

Speaking of which, its a good thing Valve never completed that mess of a game, because it would have NEVER lived up to expectations, and Valve has lost the plot a loooooong time ago, like Id. Valve is completely unable to produce a good game lately, see the artifact mess.

And the leaked HL3 script is completely FUBAR. The story is even messier and more nonsensical than HL2's, its a little like Lost, they were never going to tie up all the gimmicky plot holes and twists and unanswered questions.

Nah, HL2 was fucking flawless and magnificent m8. I'd rank it as my 2nd best SP experience ever, tied with Deus Ex, behind HL1.

One of the very few games where when the credits started to roll I physiclaly got up off of my seat and gave a standing ovation - a round of applause.

When I was younger, I used to think I got shortchanged because Final Fantasy was exclusive to the PS. Having played FF10 very recently it doesn't hold a God damn candle to Skies of Arcadia in any area, I still can't believe skies of Arcadia came out in 2002.

I recently beat it almost 18 years later on Dolphin Emulator and it was even better now than when I was about 13.

With the greatest of respect, most of the games listed here are shite, mediocre at best.

Never played it on the DC, my best friend IRL had it for the DC then we both got it for the GameCube in the form of Arcadia Legends which had a lot of extra/optional stuff added in, lower enemy encounter rate etc the best version of Skies.

Check it out via Dolphin Emulator, still holds up really well today especially when upscaled to 1080p

Anyway, you're doing the classic lie, that everyone does when posting skybox screenshots of HL2, of pretending that engine is from 2004.

That's not half life 2's 2004 graphics, that's half life 2 in the 2007 and forward version of the Source engine, that got constantly updated and retroactively on HL2 too.

Wanna compare with other games from 2007? Let's not, because it would be a massacre even without using 2007's Crysis as a comparison. That would be funny.

HL2 didn't look like that in 2004, and the video you posted is particolaurly dishonest because it spends 80% of the time zooming into wall textures from 10 cm, which is already stupid for old games to begin with, and doubly so with those two games, because Far Cry is not a corridor shooter like HL2, its maps are HUGE, not even comparable in size with HL2, and full with vegetation, buildings, animals, aliens, soldiers, and vehicles.

HL2's open spaces are barren wastelands in comparison.

If you really wanna play the zoom into floors game, do that with more similarly indoor oriented games from that year: like Doom 3.

Which blows HL2's textures out of the water, then rapes the corpse and eats it.

You can even use 2016's Doom 3 BFG edition if you still feel like playing dishonest comparisons.

Yes Diablo 1&2 were excellent games, but saying stuff like greatest single player game of all times is infinitely stupid, because it always depends on personal taste, genre and other games within a specific genre at the date of release.

An excellent FPS game that i don't see mentioned, and that's surely between the best ever, is Bioshock. Phenomenal game, and at the time nobody talked of anything else. It was the comparison meter for other FPS.

bioshock would be outstanding if it wasn't for the final boss fight.
and they could have had some better perks involving movement maybe..
