Bitterman because he's just, like, some random guy.

He was named after Jamerio by id's secret time-traveling consultant, John Titor.

Bitterman is allegedly Quake 2 guy, because 'Bitterman' is written on zour crashed pod in the 1st Q2 level.
Plus his jumpsounds and painsounds aren't annoying at all so he's a great choice for player character

Anarki, cause hes just a freak like me and gameplay-wise his sounds of running/jumping are the ones with the lower frequency, so they dont mix with medium/high frequency noise from the enemy.

It seems you are new to quake so first a clarification before the esr homeboys confuse the shit out of you, as such quake does not have any difference in game play based on character (unlike RPG, MMORPG, RTS games). All models have exactly the same running speed, jump height etc etc. Also the way you are shown in the game to the other player can be independent of what model you choose, like you might think the slash female model looks thinner hence harder to hit or something, no its not like that, irrespective of how the model looks the hitbox size is the same. Also you can force enemy look like a certain model (eg keel or tankjr for good visibility) no matter what model they are actually using, by using cg_enemyModel "keel/pm" and cg_forceEnemyModel 1 etc etc.

From practical point of view (competitive gaming) the only reason to prefer one model from another is pain sounds, as you play quake it happens that you get used to a model and can feel your / enemy's health based on their pain scrim without reading the number (in own case) and not knowing the exact value (in case of enemy). Some models make rather annoying sounds hence dont use them (like klesk). For your own model popular choices include

doom: my personal favorite, very nice pain sounds
xaero: very elegant pain sounds
bitterman: low pitch pain sounds.
ranger: classic quake guy

I have seen people using other less obscure models like grunt, slash, bones etc.

for enemymodel keel is most advised as it fits the hitbox the best, I use tankjr cause its the most easiest to spot. Limiting your choices to keel / tankjr for enemymodel is a good idea, unless you just want to have fun and gib 100 orbs or look at hunter's b**bies.

Also orb has a larger hitbox

But yeah, once I talked with some newbie quake players irl that thought that for example anarki is faster and orbb jumps further :) Funny stuff.

As for myself, I tend to change my player model, ages ago when I started playing q3 offline I used sarge/blue (fatal1ty times) later on I started using klesk, hah then when I finally started playing online I got back to sarge and stayed with it for a long time, recently I was running around the arenas with female models because of a movie project I thought about (which is in idle state atm) and right now I'm using doom

if you chose tankjr you can miss because he's bigger than the hitbox, so it has some limited importance after all -my lg is much much better with that thin model mynx (up from 21 to 28-30), because the smaller you see the model the closer you aim to the center, if you actually hit it

I played Sarge during the first days. I switched to Uriel some time ago. The reason why I currently like Uriel the most are the sounds of this model, first of all the jump sound. These sounds give me the necessary aggression to keep playing motivated. Some of the sounds of already mentioned models are plain annoying to me, for example Visor or Razor when he's getting hit.

I think almost everybody started with Xaero, I know I did. He starts to get annoying after a while though. Same with doom. :D

i like the +10% speed increase i get as ranger, the -5% damage sucks but the speed outweighs it for sure.

yes if you pick only first skill and +'s and make a vanguard he can be a tank, too!

Ranger cause i'm so used to it that i dont pretty much hear it or pay attention to it ingame, if i try something else it feels like someone is shouting in my ear :D

sarge: best model ever, great animations, great sounds for a teammodel (good pain and jump sounds, silent when walking), just overall awesomeness <3

keel: clonk-clonk wallhack walking sounds, decent fit on hitbox, huge visual appearance but not as gay as tankjr

doom: cooller uses it

QW is easily the coolest looking Quake out of all of them, so I'm gonna have to say Ranger.

Q3 had the best aesthetics with a mixture of medieval-ish like QW and modern sci-fi. It had the most varied maps. Best sound design, best models.

QW has it's own old school charm. I wish the Ranger in Q3 kept exactly the same jumping sound from QW (which was also the Q2 jumping sound).

Visor, because his jumpsound to me sounds like he's actually trying to build up speed. Gets me into the rhythm.
