^^ This. For some unknown reason, the professional scene was all about duel, so people put them on a pedestal. It's a first person SHOOTER, not a first-person adding-35-to-stuff-er

One of the most amazing wonderful things about Quake is that aim is not all that matters..

Timing, positioning, movement skills and aim all come into play, and a good player can be good with any distribution through that, it doesn't have to be heavily weighted to the aim side.

Aim is definitely not "all that matters" in most fps games, actually. Positioning, combat movement, picking fights, game sense, strategy, map knowledge etc matter a lot in every shooter. The main things that distinguish quake are: A to B movement speed as a skill, and the concept of item control.

So correct, that's why tox and strenx haven't been classed top 3 for more than a week ever

the scene is dead, there are 2 top players - Raphael and Luc1fer (aka Evil), and other guys who try to show something w/o prominent success. so there can't be overrated or underrated players atm from my view.

I think in this context, overrated and underrated players means when popular streamers incessantly blabber on about how great player X is or how crap player Y is, along with all the usual anecdotes, backstories, metaphors, comparisons and in-jokes, repeated day in day out, year after year, just to have something to talk about.

At least back when I played, in the third world there practically wasn't a duel scene nor competitions, so duelers as a whole were hardly representative of the continent. It's a regional thing. Not only that, the only one who could represent that isolated 5 to 10-man group still hasn't attended an international LAN, and that is nhd/flesh1. Think evil+cypher+rapha in terms of dominance; by far the best.

What represented South America is what players cared about, and that was CTF and lolCA. Ghost Squad was the best at both. The previous teams and players you saw at Quakecon got maybe top 8 or top 16 in local CTF tournaments, but in 2015 you finally saw the representative of the scene in the gametype that represents it.

Thing is to me, and most likely to Mousestar too, that CP9 against Toxic's team was the highlight of Quakecon 2015, yet we only care about the European players and about Rapha. That's why he thinks the South Americans are underrated. I mean, obviously no one is rating them as highly as to think they are going to win Quakecon, because they did not, but in CTF in particular -what represents South America- they can compete with the very best, yet few see that.

It took them 6 minutes of overtime to win 1-0 in Spider, in Iron they got stomped, Pillbox they lost too.

Seems they can only play that one map "well" compared to Meltdown, who also won all of TDM. I wouldn't say that's competing with some of the very best.

Top3 of the all-round players. Sure his success in duel has stagnated a bit but he has a list of achievements in tdm ctf and duel hardly anyone can equal. If anything he is underrated.

Spartie was top 3 in duel during 2009-2010 era, 2nd place eswc athens (cpma/vq3), 2nd place at qcon, etc.

cyber also underrated imo, one of the few players that can knock out cypher/etc in a bo3 in a tournament.

I feel in duel he's overrated, though you're 100% correct on his other achievements.

I think z4muz is pretty underrated, be's been inactive for the last couple of years, but in 2009 or 2010 when he last played actively he finished 2nd at one of the big lans, showing that he's potential top 3 material when he tries.

Fraze and kronic also deserve a mention imo.

Not sure about under-rated. Mayyyybe Jibo? This is purely my bias, but I feel the guy paved the way with his style for other, more successful players, like Rapha for one. You could make an argument here for IF-22 as well, I suppose. Still, Jibo added that flavour, that pizzaz, know what I mean? He was a slick motherfucker. He was fun to watch.

Over-rated is pretty easy, Fatal1ty. Fuck man, sure, he had results early on but since then, pure publicity, with a short pause for Q4 when he served as Tox's glorified cum-rag. Tiny bit conflicted, coz might as well put Thresh here, but I somehow find Thresh more likeable overall.

yeah! walter was really good from what I saw of him; very smooth and precise movement with decent all-round aim. I don't understand why he became some kind of joke within the scene. Although, Jibo and fooki was never underrated - they received various and vast amounts of hype.

I believe it's because his emotions would get the best of him, but I wasn't around.

Not sure how the hell you put Toxic in the overrated category considering no one has ever dominated any game harder than he dominated Q4 (especially if you look at the little things like score difference and weapon accuracy in each match he played). I know a lot of people, including myself, thought playing and watching him in matches during his Q4 dominance was the closest thing to playing an unbeatable bot anyone's ever felt.. but I'm overrated too so what do I know =)

It's also worth mentioning that tox's era of dominance was at the time when the quake scene was more competitive than ever before or after...

I don't know about overrated but two people I would say were greatly underrated would be Python and Ph4ntom. If you look at how good they were able to become despite having the extremely limited practice pools to play from on their respective parts of the world it's pretty incredible. They could hang with and beat/upset absolutely anyone at any tournament they attended.

There were even people from the early ESWC's (2001, 2002) from countries like Egypt, Israel and Afghanistan. Some of these people didn't even have cable internet connections and were stuck playing on dial-up everytime they wanted to play Quake. Some of them had _zero_ people to play against and would only play bots and watch demos to prepare for ESWC. Obviously they didn't do too great, but some of them had respectable games with top players- that alone is pretty incredible when you consider where they came from and the lack of resources they had to prepare for a tournament of this size.

Also the Australians in general in CTF circa 2001-2004 were on a totally different level than anyone else, they just couldn't ever compete with the mainstream community due to their location and the steep expense making it to the big LAN's during that era. If you're ever bored I encourage people to dig up some Aussie CTF demos from that time and check it out. Really exciting games.

dude I'm not sure where you get your information, but ph4ntom was an amazing dueller. His 2001/2002 sort of prime I would say he could beat almost anyone in the world. He was beating z4 on t4 back then.

If anything his duel was his strongest aspect of his game. I've played him countless times and watched him pretty much dominate the SA quake scene for over 10 years. He was also fucking insane at q4.

Ph4ntom hardly ever a good dueler? I remember he placed very well at wcg2002. 7-8th place while python placed 5-6th. Also beat Socrates in the group stages who later went on to place 3rd.

He's spot on though. We had our own scene and the game developed in our own microcosm differently.

Honestly, am one of the North African players, i know my potential and i know what i can do ( and i did, kind of ) but always had the lack of " ping " cause the best ping i have ever got in my whole life was 55 ( and it was in Quake 2 ), am not saying that ping is a problem but i dont get a high ping, its not just that, but also alot of lags and packet loss, if only i was living in Europe or some country with decent internet....

Also, the gaming gear, in here they are so freaking expensive, like, for a mouse it costs 150- 200 euros and it breaks after a month or two, i did focus on ql for a while and ended up invited for DreamHack but it was just two months, sometimes it is depressing and i just say " fuck it, am not playing anymore " its like everything is against me ( and ppl from North Africa )..... if only some sponsor me to go to europe for a month or two, there would be a surprise in the Quake scene...

Maybe wait for Quake Champions and you might see me.

Very old reply, but having been around and watched Ph4ntom for years and years, he was extremely underrated. It wasn't just being isolated, but also lack of exposure of going to events, which was just not possible from SA due to expenses of flying around. If he was able to just attend big events he probably would have been able to rise to the top.

He won his first big tournament in SA when he was 16! He wasn't even the favourite or even considered to be the best in SA at that time. And from that point on he pretty much just never lost, even when other really good players appeared, and he would go through time periods of low activity.

I think he eventually got "challengers" in SA which approached his level, but it was long past the prime of Quake III.

I think what people saw in fox was his raw skill. He had a strong combination of like everything necessary, rockets lg and rail.

IIRC Fox won cpm duel @ Dreamhack against some of the best in Europe despite only playing cpm to prepare for the event. Sadly in q3/ql he was more or less a perennial 3rd place finisher.

Yes and finished 3rd in in the vq3 tournament at the same event.
Fox was always super solid, but never a champion in duel iirc.

The guy has disgusting movement and rockets, his style is boring as hell to watch and his lg is about the only thing special about him yet he always places well in tournaments and i can't for the life of me figure out why..

His exceptional timing and item rotation. He almost has an 'indifferent' style to his opponents strengths, and just had to make minor adjustments (stop giving away free damage) to really give cypher a hard time.

The guy is a monster, I think of his style as that of an American agent that can actually aim and doesn't act like an ass, that's why he places well imo :)

All those players who are afraid to prove their lg on thunderstruck are overrated.

What...? Both of them were hyped because of novelties unrelated to how they played the game ("ERMERGERD CHINESE QUACK PLAYA"). Both took people by complete surprise when it came to how well they played (RB for his shaft, and Ph4ntom for his rox), and you could imagine that if they had regular access to high level players i.e. lived in Europe when Quake mattered, they could've been much better. So under-rated.

fooki played at eswc when sweden beat usa in 04 or was it 05, I would say that was one of the big highlights of quake looking back.

Don't think he was underrated. He could beat most people at quake 3 and quake 4 and take games off pretty much anyone.

Slightly over shadowed by fellow swedes fazz,fox, tox, z4muz was the problem I think, but was considered a pro without a doubt.

Just maybe not quite as pro, but you could say that about nearly ever pro vs the top 2-3.

chance was/is the most overrated. there are two european users here who said underrated, but probably because they never dealt with him.

chance was by far the least acheivements of any quake player, combined with the largest ego. if you beat him even once online, he's going to spend the next 2 minutes saying why you are lucky and stupid and just win with aim, even though he and his opponents are from na, a region famous for having shit accuracy. it's not like clawz running around hitting him with 60% rail. the craziest one was when rapha was streaming, and btw, rapha was a fucking monster on g900. it's like he had the same playstyle but with strenx accuracy. anyways, rapha gave up on g900 towards the end of his practice for qcon, because a button broke and he didn't feel confident in their reliability, so he went back to wmo instead of buying a new one. chance is losing dozens of games, and saying weird shit like rapha is just lucky. then, he is forcing rapha to play toxicity when toxicity wasn't in the pool.

if there's one lesson to learn from chance, it's that you can't respect someone just for being oldschool.

Lots of old Quake players are/were just assholes.
