It had seemed so easy. There were just so many stats CVs available on the web, and the act of downloading one was just one innocent click.

It wasn't exactly like stealing, reflected zsx, as he double clicked to open stats-CV-2016-2462. After all, the original author had made it publicly available. And besides, he only meant to read through it and get a general idea of the structure. Inspiration is quite legitimate, thought zsx; not at all a form of plaigarism.

The CV was good - very good. Opening a new Word document, zsx paused. "Where to start", he wondered. Frankly, he couldn't think of any improvement on his linguistically-talented anonymous peer's work. Wouldn't it help the process to start from that template?

Entering his personal details in the title fields of the CV, zsx felt much better. He was progressing quickly, and isn't it true that no CV is original these days anyway? The qualifications were a little different - true zsx had majored in Ecology not Statistics, but degrees are about the skills not knowledge, and he'd done a second year statistics module after all. What had that been again? Ah yes, counting the density of daisies in random 1m by 1m samples of meadow, and calculating the mean and standard deviation in the field. At a 'higher degree of significance', zsx had made out with that hot biology first year that day. And as statisticians (like zsx) would say: the chances of that were slim. Yes, a career in statistics was definitely a good long-term move.

A couple more edits, some clicks and a short cover letter later, and the application was sent.

Yes, at the time it had been so easy. But now, with 2 hours left to his first deadline, a comprehensive statistical model of the lifetime of engine components, accompanied by a full report, zsx wasn't finding his job so easy. It wasn't that he was incompetent - certainly not! - no, it was just that he wasn't quite settled in to his job yet. But his boss wouldn't understand that, and zsx had his eyes on the end-of-year bonus a colleague had told him hard working employees received. But how could he possibly deliver the project on time? He needed some guidance. But where could be possibly attain reliable, informed and experienced help, without any questions asked?

Sitting up straight in his chair so quickly he nearly spilt his coffee, zsx realised he knew just such a place. A wonderful, intelligent venue where learned citizens exchanged ideas freely and solutions were always available to the most challenging problems. ESReality.com...
