I like Valve games since TF and HL1, I always had great fun with all of their products (except this new dota2 thingy, which I can't care less about). Recently I'm having fun doing HL speedruns, just for fun, so I have nothing against Valve, but...
Steam is still a DRM, and it's getting locked down more and more as we speak. They beat piracy with a better global service, and now - years later - they are introducing region locks, and they also just made accounts without purchases limited (min $5)...... There are still many great things ofc (Steamworks, family sharing, Greenlights, home-streaming, etc) but it's not the right direction anymore imo, and less freedom always backfires on the long run (, even when they are only locking down things to protect their paying costumers).

I wish I could keep QL standalone. I know it's shitty, but I like it and somehow I already accepted it as how it is, and I'm really not in the mood to watch over how it will turn into nothing but a TF2 wannabe on Steam.

reasons

- drm: yes, the devs have to protect their games. in this case with a very basic drm, which is really easy to bypass, after a few hours most of the steam releases are availabe on public torrent sites, thats how fantastic this drm is.

- limited accounts: im happy for that, cause i get one friend request a week from a bot, or a scammer

- keeping ql away from steam (and maybe going standalone) would hurt on the cheater side. im so glad we gonna have vac sooner or later, and maybe matchmaking.
the ingame friendthing also fuckin terrible, and its nicer to just use the steam friends instead.
what i also experienced, is the proper cloud system compared to ql built in. valve actually saves the whole cfg, ql only saves ceratin cvars for me. i always had to use an autoexec, and make my cfg writeprotected, but steam solved it.

i do agree with the regionlocks, its a pain in the ass.
also as an old modplayer, i thought that skyrim mod thing was a joke. who would pay several bucks for a freaking skin. i support donating modders, but this is just robbery. yeah, make every mod "pay what you want", let him earn some money for his hard work, but this is nonsense.

The number of friends you can have on Steam is limited though. Those migrating to Steam for QL will have to deal with that.

- I do agree with the need of anti-cheat, but I'm skeptical about its effectiveness in QL (some focus members did tell how most cheats work in QL, so look up those post if you are interested because I won’t break the NDA what I promised to hold)

it's just a speedrun for a different game. Nobody will mix up times from different versions anyways.

You can get bunnymod on steam though i bought hl1 on steam precisely cuz of the great speedrun possibilities. The only annoying thing is that the german version has robots instead of soldiers and u cant kill scientists, instead they sit down on the ground and shake their head lol.
