Speedrunning is a community that is getting bigger and bigger every year. Speedrunning means completing a game as fast as possible without cheating, you may use glitches inside the game but no cheat codes. There are over 1000 speedruns over at Speed Demos Archive and probably more that haven't been submitted yet.
The guys over at SDA got two events every year where they gather people from all over the world for about 6-7 days and play video games. These are called AGDQ, SGDQ, Awesome Games Done Quick and Summer Games Done Quick.

Last year at AGDQ 2014 they managed to raise $1,031,189.00 for the Prevent Cancer Foundation and Summer Games Done Quick managed to raise $718,155.07 for Doctors Without Borders. Letting people know about these events could help the cause and - the more people that join the speedrunning community the better.

I hope you got inspired enough to watch some of these awesome runs and hopefully you'll be speedrunning very soon! more helpful links will be posted below to help you find everything you need to know about speedrunning.

Depends who's running f-zero (if you're talking about GX). Also, you're in for a treat for halo 2. MisterMonopoli seems to be setting all kinds of wr's recently and finding new strats for difficulty runs so should be good!

This Q2 speed run will be interesting. All the other speed runs that I have seen for Q2 had players who did not use strafe jumping, but this player who is running the game at AGDQ does.

Yeah, unfortunately a lot of times you end up seeing a game being ran by a player who doesn't currently hold the WR or is the best at running x game. I agree with you that it would be cool to watch more optimal speed runs at that event, but it is far less likely to happen since AGDQ is ran as a charity event rather than as a competitive one.

Considering there has been multiple world records set at the games done quick events, that's pretty bullshit.

Those events seem more about putting on a good showing and displaying cool tricks. If the speed runners actually cared about getting good times, then they wouldn't go for super hard tricks after failing them multiple times in a row, if they really cared about getting a good time. Instead, they would go for guaranteed routes/tricks.

WRs do get set there and it's cool when it happens, but it's not the norm. I'm sure a lot of speed runners would love to enjoy the glory of setting WRs live in front of thousands of viewers, but the typical reaction after a speed run is relief or content when they find out that their timers aren't completely horrible or are decent. If they were playing more competitively, they wouldn't be okay at times with getting a subpar time.

Part of what makes AGDQ interesting is seeing all the glitches and exploits that players have found over the years. The run Cosmo did where he explained the history behind OoT and how some of the exploits worked was fascinating.

There's nothing wrong with people going for world records, but you can see them do that anytime they feel like streaming.

I played through 2 levels.
So far I like the movement. Lack of air control. Sword swing on double jump.
Enemies are nice and diverse.
First boss was cool. Throwing javelins at shield in order to climb and cut his head off :o

Cool event and I find it interesting that people all over the world are donating to an American foundation that then funds American institutions and educates people for detection of early stages of cancer, and funds examinations of American people for cancer.

You are saying that they are rich, so it makes sense that lots of cancer research (which isn't free) comes from there.

Well ok that makes sense, but smaller percentage of money goes to research.
About 20% according to their financial statements.

They do public education, advocacy and community outreach, create free cancer screenings, produce Video Public Service Announcements do tours, campaigns and events across the country. Prevention and early detection are best tools right now.

I can't believe I'm talking about a cancer charity I have nothing against here, I'm talking about people donating from X county because some family member or friend has cancer thinking that that organization has any effect on their own local community environment to lower the chances somebody else getting cancer.

These are just people donating money for a cause, not because it will magically cure their families and friends.
It's really hard to cure cancer, chipping in a dollar or two to a research center can't really hurt you.

Yes, you are right, even charities have to live from something although I'm not buying into the 20% thing.

But fear not my friend, according to a recent study, cancer is just a mixture of bad luck and random mutation :)

I think it's more interesting, that 'normal' people donate their money with the actual intention to help other people to some foundation which searches for a cure of a certain disease and once it is explored, big pharma corporations(which have enough money to raise those funds on their own anyway) patent the cure and sell it for prices, poor people can't afford(doesn't matter in which country or which nationality, hint: in the usa are many poor and homeless people aswell.)

but nice intentions form the people who donate anyway..

The jedi knight run was really good and explained pretty much everything on their run.
Same with the Q2 run, lots of cool tricks and a decent time.

Duke run didn't go perfect but seemed like he had issues with the PC and it's so fast it's nearly impossible to explain what's going on, his Blood run was awesome though!

The dude only got around 50fps due to the pc going full derp. Any pc made in the last 10 years should get stable 180 which was unfortunate. I run Duke Megaton Edition as well and I feel his pain, those clips he does are so difficult with only 50fps.

I never speedruned Quake II but I tried it after watching this with the demo version and I finished it much faster than he did on my first try (to the point where demo ends).

Great event! Can't wait NES speedruns. I'm not too old, but in Russia the first and most popular console what we have here was Dendy - chineese clone of NES. It appeared here in 1994, although its support to the USA ended in 1995. But I'm very glad that we found this console, a lot of good games are enjoyable to play even now.

Any Defraggers thought about applying to get onto a GDQ event?

Something short. Would probably be something more like the TASBOT runs than a run through, more of a showcase. Play defrag for 5-10 mins showing off what can be done and explaining whats going on with movement, weapons usage, over bounce etc etc. And then another 10 mins with some races or something on various maps.

Sounds good to me.

I'm not at all familiar with the gameplay, but it looks like the runner makes some totally unnecessary and noisy movement combinations from 0:25 to 0:28. Maybe she was asking him to stop deliberately making unnecessary noise?

How do these people have the time to take part to this event? Is this holiday season in other parts of the world or do they take days off ? Don't give me the obvious answer they're all unemployed.

False. Most of them have jobs, the only person I know who makes money off speedrunning is Cosmo. I know for a fact a lot of them just get time off work for this particular event.

That might have been the case a year ago, but there are alot of speedrunners now that make way more than cosmo.
Also he only plays smash nowadays so his viewership isn't as large as it was.

On the last day, Super Metroid is being played - the ending has the option to A save the animals or B kill the animals and save some time.

People are donating and voting whether the speedruners should go for the record or not.
