the sf name is very strong. Too strong for most people to resist. Perhaps we should outline in exactly what it will be succesful in. mainstream sales and for most online play it will probably be a success, but if you are talking about professional tourneys I wouldn't really know and would not argue with you over it.

You are right about the sonic part, but only if you would compare the sonic of the old to the utter crap they released these last years. sf4 actually looks like a great follow up to the old series that started it all and is unlikely to piss off the fans like sonic did.

you can't just use a name and hope for huge sells if the game is crap (e.g. sonic), but sf4 looks like having at least a pretty good gameplay

Have you played sf4 yet? To be honest it has the best online interfaces I've seen for a fighter or any game for that matter. I'd put street fighter up much higher than tekken any day.

The thing is Street Fighter is able to bring out a lot more ppl imo than a tekken title. There have been other tekken games and soul calibur games hyped up recently and they where released and passed by and I didn't give them a second look. But I bought street fighter 4 the first day it came out and so did many other people and I think that's saying something. On top of that I feel like it was a great purchase and it's still in my xbox now and hasn't left since I put it in (that's what she said).

That's a huge number, especially for a niche game and at a time when sales are down. And it would sell even more if it were not for the fact that sticks are hard to get and the fact that you need one to play it properly.

Same here. For years now I'm trying to convince them SF (or some other 2D Beat 'em ups) is way better than Tekken/SC/DOA and alikes, but they prefer button smashing, rather than doing circles all the time with the analog/digital stick. It's much harder (imo) to perform a clean 360° circle on your stick than doing some button smash combos, but my friends just don't see how SF can be so much better :/

One or two of the fighting games would be a part of real competitive gaming events. Imagine a Quake Live, Starcraft 2, Streetfighter 4 event for example, they're all recent titles but are potentially extremely solid competitive platforms.

I really wanted to like it and I've been playing it a lot offline for almost two weeks now and online for two days, but I can't get into it:

- The netcode is not good (not really bad either, about as good as VF5's). Much worse netcode than HDR (and GGPO, of course) with tons of input delay at times that throws all the timing off.
- The online is crap. It's nice being able to get matches from arcade mode, but no quarter matches, the ability to change the settings for ranked matches (1 round and 30 seconds wtf), no blind select, stage selection (that stalls games even more), the ability to see your opponent's name beforehand (idiots end up kicking you from matches if you have beaten them before, etc.
- There is something wrong with the feeling of the game. I can't really explain it, but player movement is too slow (so you have to rely on dashes, which I never liked), it has that floaty feeling, hitboxes are really weird at times, moves won't connect out when doing them late when jumping, etc. This is something I'm starting to get used to, but it's hard coming from the rock-solid feeling of super turbo.
- Combos into ultras look retarded to me in lots cases like dp xx fadc, ultra. I can understand the appeal of them, but I sometimes feel the need to punch the monitor when I lose half my health because of something like that.
- Unsafe on block moves and trades. Again, this is because I'm used to other games, but some moves make no sense to me (both in terms of advantage and priority) and the amount of clashing moves that trade is ridiculous.
- Too defensive. Unless you are using one of the few characters with good rushing options, it's much better to turtle HARD. Also, meaties suck and quick rise fucks up the wakeup games, making people stay passive after knockdowns most of the time. It definitely doesn't have the flow of classic SF. I thought people would take more risks with the game having low damage ratios, but nope, it's turtlefest for the most part.
- Shotoidiots: 95% of the players below 2000 bp use only Ryu, Ken or Akuma online. Once you start playing above 2000 bp 95% of them are Sagats (because it's stupidly easy winning with him).

Also, I really think the game is not as accessible as people are making it out to be. It's more accessible for ultracasual play, that's for sure, but once you start needing to deal some big damage and make good use of the ultras you need to put some hours in the training mode.

They missed a great opportunity of teaching people how to play. I wished they included tutorials, tips, etc, but they only included the challenge mode with some ridiculously hard combos (no kidding, some of those links are insane).

Anyway, I'm still playing, I'm trying to learn Rose now (she can use her ultra without comboing and it doesn't look like she needs many options to compete, although she's not specially powerful) and maybe it'll grow on me, but I still prefer HDR by a wide margin at this point.

From what I've seen in youtube videos, the game doesn't feel like turtlefest to me, probably because most of videos I've watched are of high-level play. But yeah Sagat is a real pain when I watch his gameplay, which is boring and can easily win without doing anything special :/ His ultra seems very easy to connect, and it is very damaging. It seems that you've lost to many Sagats, and so will all of us.

Combos into ultra... well, I'm coming from 3s which has also some really damaging combos with supers, so they don't seem like a big problem to me. At least doing a combo into ultra is usually harder to do, than combo'ing into supers in 3s. (But again, I hate to see Sagat connect his ultra so easily and deal BIG damage).

Dashes: As a 3s player I don't think that would annoy me that much!

About those shotoidiots: The game is new, so there are lots of shoto scrubs around who will quit playing SF after 2 weeks and start playing another new game.

Sagat is disgusting. He has literally no weaknesses and too much bullshit (high damage, best zoning game, high priority normals, best special, thousand ways to combo into ultras, million ways to deal high damage out of light kicks, etc), but the most disgusting thing is that everybody is playing him (I played about 15 ranked matches today: all Sagats except one Ken and one Rufus). So yes, basically all my lost matches are to Sagat.

At this point I'm seriously considering doing like everybody else and switching to him (I'm seeing players that two days ago were using other characters using Sagat now). It's so easy winning matches against much higher ranked people with him (I can easily zone out for ages most idiots I get paired with, I've already tried it) that putting effort into lesser characters seems pointless, specially after seeing the console characters with unsafe moves (drills, spirals), no ways to combo into ultra, no ways of dealing big damage out of pokes, much worse normals, etc.

And I still have fun playing other characters against friends, but the thought of trying to get decent at the game and facing the hordes of higher tier characters with their ultra bullshit makes me want throw up.

I'll keep trying to like the game because it's going to have a big player base and that's something really important that every other game is going to lack (maybe BlazBlue will get some love too), but I really dislike it right now.

Probably all of this hate will be gone if you do one thing:

DON'T PLAY RANKED!

...until the community becomes more mature at the game and people try choosing other characters than "top-tier characters", and they also learn how to defeat Sagat even with those console characters you mentioned.

Top team is magneto/storm/sentinel (occasionally cable or psylocke) and the rest of the players are pretty much useless. Players have tried to push for more mid/low tier tourneys and such, but everyone just sticks to the regular magneto/storm/sentinel. =/

Nah, it's not that hard by any means in SF4, you can even do things with Vega, but the annoyance of playing the same characters over and over is still there.

Also, everybody is playing ranked because the system is well thought (I mean the BP, the rest is crap). I can't even find decent players on player matches.

i played it for the first time yesterday. while it's no ST, it's probably the next best SF game i've played when it comes to testing a player's decision making ability. i agree with you on some of the priorities being totally fucked up. i don't entirely agree with you on the floaty feeling. when i saw videos on youtube, it screamed "omg dumbed down for new players". it sure is different but i don't think it's really detrimental to the game.

mind you, i've only played about 3 hours so far and i'm not a high level player by any means but this was my opinion. i wasn't able to test things out to the best of my ability either as i couldn't pull anything off on the shitty Xbox controller. i think it was designed by a monkey. as far as gamepads go, Sega Genesis 6 button / Saturn pad FTW even today.

SF4 did look floaty to me before I played it but it didn't really feel that way in game. I think you should try it asap. It's a pretty good game. The second best in the series IMO.

I think the netcode is awsome. I get no buttondelay against players with 3 or 4 bar connection.

I get lots of input delay with three bars and noticeable one with four bars. Most people on SRK agree with this.

And still, GGPO is miles better and would make cross continent play with zero delay possible.

Tekken 6 is an E-sport game in South Korea without being released yet on console or PC. SF4 also have an huge SF4 arcade community in US and Japan.

SF4 will sell much more than SF3, but SF3 was still a very popular tournament game on console thanx to the arcade community. SF4 won't get as big as Counter-Strike, WoW, and Starcraft, but lots of people will show up for the big SF4 tournaments.

There are over 100 000 players on the online leaderboard for ps3. Not bad considering not everyone plays ranked matches. I guess there are even more players on Xbox Live.

SF4 is fundamentally messed up and does nearly everything wrong. MVC3 was designed by a bunch of dumb fucks who had absolutely no idea how mvc2 was played. MK is MK so it can't be good. The new KI is a weird sf4 clone dunked into KI juice.

You're left with kof 13, Skullgirls, Blazblue, Guilty Gear, the Persona game and a bunch of doujins/glorified doujins like Yatagarasu. And Super Turbo because nobody ever stopped playing ST.

I used to play SS1 all the time in the arcade, it was trying to compete against super turbo at the time, (which pretty much went on to be the best fighting game of all time to those in the know), but its one of the most atmospheric fighting games ever played to this day and I respect it a lot.

The short version is that the designers didn't know how the older games worked and tried to emulate the things they saw and then did a lot of damage control/special case tweaking to knock some sense back into the game. Lots of weird shit like the corner crossups, the odd midair behaviour on hit, the linkfest ( which wasn't planned, links were "implemented" when, 3 months before the arcade release, the guys at fight club told capcom that cancelled cr.short*5 cancelled into ultra was retarded ), the shitton of option selects, the input autocorrect that actually makes it harder to play if you do things properly, the overlapping motions....

On the surface it's a good super turbo clone, which is what most people played and what it was judged on. And that's fine by me. As a competitive game, it would have been laughed at in 1999.

I haven't tried it. Wasn't interested when it was released and I'm not even going to bother with it as it has more than twice as much offline lag ( 120ms ) than any fg worth a shit.

I do remember thinking the 09ers were bitching about changes that made the game less stupid back during the beta but I don't remember what those changes were.

The game is ok, but it has some shitty ratios to appease to the modern gamer.

the biggest of these is the fact that the game rewards you ultra meter for getting beaten up, which then allows you to inflict up to 40% damage for landing one move. In a game which has about 50 characters with two ultras each, it requires a HUGE amount of time to learn how to avoid even a basic ultra, add in the 1000's of combinations which can set you up for landing an ultra and they've really generalised it a lot by making ultras a massive part of the game play.

imagine in quake where if you land 3 rails in a row, and the game says, hey, this guy rails too good, tell you what, next time the other guy hits one rail, well dynamically up the damage by 300% of his to even things out and eat into that 200/200 you just built up.

its only justified by it working both ways, but even then you're left feeling cheated if its done against you, or you feel cheap if you do it to someone else.

the result is, you're part of something which isn't so great any more.

the only people who win are those who just have no standards, or understanding of how things used to work, when you actually had to work hard for your wins.

It wasn't. It was considered a crappy game until the Daigo parry happened and people in the West started praising it without understanding how much parries broke the game. Then they re-released it on XBLA and PSN and people realised it's still a shitty unbalanced game with fundamental problems.

USF4 is good and it has the most active community by far, so that's the one you should play.

I'd say Street Fighter 4 brought fighting games back from the dead. Currently Ultra Street Fighter 4 is at the top of the twitch streams usually.
