The choice is really hard. Probably Dazed and Confused.

The live version of it kills, specifically when the band joins in again after the mid section and they go off full throttle. I occasionally visit a furniture designer friend in Denmark who has a big canvas in his workshop onto which we project the film while partying to it, and that's our favorite bit. Always pisses me off though how they cut away from the stage during that section, to some MSG guards chasing down kids who tried to get in without tickets.

Great songs from the more lyrical department. I'd say Thank You belongs there, too. My friends always seem to prefer Stairway To Heaven, but me I never really liked it.

They really did rip off a lot of musicians...

Fact is, in some very few cases Led Zep allegedly didn't give proper credits in their original releases. Where most if not all of those cases are debatable anyway. The whole thing is totally blown out of proportion and, by now, pretty much amounts to perpetual whine, mostly by fans of "rivaling" bands who're having problems with Led Zep's recognition and success (being second best selling band ever in the US for example, behind The Beatles, and otherwise "widely considered one of the most successful, innovative and influential rock groups in history" as Wikipedia states it). I've stopped responding to this crap a long while ago, after having listened to a couple of examples of those so-called "ripoffs".

where that author himself apparently hasn't fact-checked the cases he's referring to but rather relies on hearsay.

Fun fact: they've been sued (and lost) for one line in an otherwise original song while Page and the Yardbirds (Led Zeppelin afterwards) stole Jack Holmes' "Dazed and Confused" to a much much bigger extent and got away with it without any issue. They just heard the song for the first time in their US tour and thought it would be fine to "Bring It On Home".

This "ripoff" thing is mostly a stupid debate though. It is putting shade over 99% of original and awesome content. But it proves that you know nothing about this band.

Thanks for your responses guys. Interesting picks, some more obvious - like Moby Dick clearly having an appeal to drummers or Heartbreaker being often quoted for its guitar - some not so much. Here's still some others I might have considered possible candidates, as they've been ranking high on my list at various points in time:

You Shook Me, for its old school blues yet original sound recording (reverse echo etcetera). Friends, also for its "indian" sounding arrangements later picked up in oh-so-popular Kashmir. Four Sticks, again for pretty sweet arrangements specifically during choruses, laid over a driving beat. The Song Remains The Same, for its variable guitar sounds and speed. Bron-Yr-Aur, as the simple yet lovely acoustic guitar ballad it is. And that's about it I guess, on top of what's already been mentioned, cause I usually stop with Physical Graffiti anyway. Could have named a couple of others still though (like Going To California, Babe I'm Gonna Leave You, ....).

Achilles last stand is top favorite. The rain song being close 2nd in personal favorite list.

nah, usually im glad to not understand lyrics. its just... i dont "feel" led zepplin. (for example: same with jazz music - i think jazz is music from people who are unmusical. they sure can play their instruments, but all they do is making sound)

Might be a little easier if you had a taste for blues and understood what LZ did to it. Look at my fav for example, The Lemon Song. LZ got sued for it in 1972, for uncredited use of Howlin' Wolf's Killing Floor. So here's the original blues song

I'd say the comparison makes it pretty clear why people freaked out over LZ's sound back then, and why it's still being held in high regard. In particular, Bonham's drums and Page's licks are just overwhelming. That said, not everything's for everybody of course.

The new issue (initially only the first thee albums) is done "by Jimmy himself", from the original tapes. See the announcement I linked to above.

So expectations are generally high, also due to the variety of purchase options for each album:
1 CD
1 Vinyl (180g)
2 CD (one with extras, like raw mixes and live recordings)
2 Vinyl
2 CD + 2 Vinyl + hardcover book 70+ pages

and I still might have forgotten something. This is going to be a huge release and will likely have fans scrap their old remastered recordings asap (except some uninformed smart alecks maybe).

Vinyl LP covers btw will be exactly like the originals, as with that wheel in the cover of LZ III.

yeah no doubt it will be huge and no doubt i will buy it. especially interesting on 180g, i guess. but the last remsater from the "mothership"-era was really horrible, although it was also produced by Jimmy. But I guess the songs are just not made to be listened to in a newly remastered sense. all the atmosphere goes away and it just sounds sterile and boring.

but nevertheless for <60€ i might as well just get them all.

I never bought any of those compilations, but the 1992 reissue you yourself seemed to be fine with was definitely ok, and actually improved the sound (like way better stereo separation) in many instances.

I'm expecting even more this time around, seeing how much of a prestigious project this is and what a huge risk they're taking with this variety of options. This is a big investment on the selling end and I'm confident Jimmy does everything he can so that ppl will like it. Will probably be his last complete reissue in his lifetime anyway, so it's pretty much the final word on LZ and ultimate legacy we're looking at here.

1992 was big improvement from originals, 2007 was of course an improvement in terms of quality, but totally did not capture the atmosphere.

I'm just afraid that using even more technology will be a step further in the wrong direction.

Frankly, I'm not psyched so much but I'm certainly looking forward to this. Also because Jimmy's contribution to LZs initial success wasn't just his awesome guitar play but also his innovative sound recording techniques. So I'm confident he knows what he's doing.

Personally, I'm going to get LZ II first, on CD and Vinyl, partly due to nostalgia because that's the album I started with as a kid. Depending on how good it is I'll be making my buying decision from there. LZ I and IV (well technically untitled) would be next on my list, but since it's only the first three albums now I guess I'm going to consider III too if results are as good as I'm expecting them to be.

yeah you might want to buy all of them anyway, because vinyl is usually sold out quite fast. and if you listened to II and you didn't like that you can sell the others for profit on discogs, I guess.

I don't expect the vinyls to be sold out so soon. As said already, LZ is the second best selling band in the US ever. And with all the work that's going in there, like those original album covers, the supply should be ample.

What might sell out soon is the supposedly limited "super deluxe" edition with 2CDs + 2 Vinyls + book + other stuff. But for LZ II alone that one would weigh in at a hefty 110 bucks according to the amazon listings I looked at last week, and that's a price tag I'm definitely not going to pay for aa single album. For me, it's still the music I'm after and not collector items.
