I don't think that anyone can "tell Carmack what to do".

It would appear that he just does the things he likes to do. I don't think that he's "been in it for the money" since wolfenstein.

If he doesn't like it he'll just focus his attention elsewhere.... If anything then I guess that facebook buying occulus is a great sign for armadillo aerospace. (I thought Carmack was still affeliated with them... I'm not entirely sure though ;p)
