Tablets are for people who don't do much with computers. Mostly what you would call the demand-side: people who want wikipedia, music, video, and casual gaming. They don't produce anything with computers, and therefore, only need the highly limited access-end.

I bought an ipad to develop crap, and test it. Found out that webbrowsing is really much nicer with a 500 g pad in the soffa than a 2 kg laptop, and no balls warmed up by batttery.

I am using my android tablet for surfing the net, reading books with the kindle app (works great) and for learning chinese (pleco). Sometimes I watch movies on the train or in the plane!

I have a Kindle Paperwhite. It is *only* for reading books. If you try to do anything else on it you will be disappointed.

Edit just to clarify this - it is very good for reading books on. I'm a total convert and am dismantling my collection of hundreds of books now for a digital library.

Reading books on a pad is not great - different display technology that gives you eye strain after a while ..

I'm a complete noob about e-readers and to reading as a hobby for that matter, but I want to get into it.

1.- Is the kindle really that much recommendable? Specific models if possible, and please consider I want it only for reading (absolutely 0 interest on anything else).
2.- Is it possible to pirate stuff? Like put 10gb of pdfs there without paying a penny on content and problem solved for life. I ask this especially because if that's the case then it sounds like the perfect gift for people that enjoy reading books, like my dad.

I have the standard kindle and the paperwhite too. I would recommend the standard kindle because it's cheaper, lighter and the battery lasts longer:

The paperwhite has touchscreen and a backlight that helps increase the contrast ratio, but both are gimmicks essentially and if all you're interested in is reading then you don't need either.

And yes, you can manually upload files to the kindle by either plugging it in with USB cable, or by emailing the file to the special kindle address you set up for the device. As an example, I **TESTED** downloading mobi files from usenet and piratebay and emailed them to my kindle address, and they appear as genuine books. So if you were some kind of evil pirate you can illegally download most books and read them on a brilliant device without paying anything at all. That's some sneaky shit and I would NEVER do that as I love Amazon and all big corporations please don't prosecute me.

Question goes into having a ready to go device as fast as possible, instead of having to learn how it works (why is it have to be the case with all devices) and waste time every time I want to read something.

Is the gutemberg accessible from the kindle or do I have to download the book (sounds funny) on the pc then transfer it to the kindle? As I said before I like things being easy to use, and from a complete outsider this looks like the type of stuff that is easier and faster when pirating it than the official version.

Yes there are book bundles on piratebay - go have a look. And as our American friend mentioned above, there are some nice library management software bits like calibre. But if you download a pack of mobi files you can just transfer the files directly to the documents folder via USB cable. Seriously though, a good book must be at least a week's worth of reading, so it doesn't hurt to spend 5 minutes searching for it, downloading and sending to your device.

o.k., some day the pads might reach the quality of e-ink displays ...
and reading on a device is definitely the future ...
but as long as the kindle version has the same price as the paper version or is only 1 euro cheaper than it and shipping remains free for books on amazon, I'll stay with paper books ...

i bought my mum a kindle for christmas and pretty much every book she looked at it was atleast 50% cheaper than paper version, mostly more than that as well.

pdfs do not display very well on the kindle actually, and epubs need to be converted to display properly. You can convert epubs to the mobi format of kindle quite easily though using something like calibre.

its not replacement of desktop pc more like replacement of laptop! but dumbed down and cheaper. Also ppl are fucking stupid and lazy, with tablet u noneed to reinstall win/update drivers&soft manually and tons of stuff...just PUSH the fucking icon "MUSIC" and listen music - pretty simple even for IQ 50 or lower (like average american redneck).

About need/no need..tablets are good only for 3 things:

I have been using an asus tf300tg and it's been lovely I can browse proper webpages, play mame games with an arcade stick, read books quite well and jot down notes.

Yeah if your gonna get one , get a good one with parts you can replace with sanwa or seimitsu parts or maybe crown and myongshin parts if you manage to find a korean stick , but japanese sticks are common.

I really enjoy my android tablet for reading, checking emails, and watching movies and such when I'm not near my desktop.

They shouldn't be thought of as a complete replacement, just a partial alternative for the non-gaming entertainment side of the computer.

My iPad has pretty much replaced my computer for all the daily web browsing, checking mails, tweet and so on. I also use it for sketching rough ideas in ArtRage, reading books, watch movies, produce music and a lot more.

I do travel a lot in my work so it's great for using on the plane for hours instead of pulling out the heavy windows piece of crap laptop I use for work.

I really like the iPad. However, I've tried a few other tablets (android and surface which I get for free from work) and they're all shit compared to the iPad imo.

I used an iPad 2 for business docs, coaching and development plans an reports a lot of excel style stuff. Got use to touchscreen keyboard in a couple weeks I can type faster on it than regular keyboard.

It's just quicker for checking email and browsing than a regular laptop. The battery is good too. You can actually use it for more than one hour before it dies.. Not a fan of smartphones for browsing

This. I don't have an iPad or anything like it; I do have a smartphone and frankly I use it a lot when commuting. I would love to have a bigger screen to browse, read (I read cracked.com, A LOT) and watch streams when I don't want to carry around my huge Dell laptop that dies after 45 minutes.

To you, cyronix, I don't want a tablet because it can replace a regular pc, but it sure is a little lighter to carry around and the size is more comfortable when you're on your way home from work.

Tables PCs are made for comfort of frequent casual usage. Let's not make a sensation out of it.
