It's not the config... it's the horrible teal and orange aftereffect fisume happens to like, so he uses them on his videos... I can assure everybody the game is not this... TEAL.

Welcome to 2012. The game is still 100x times better than slow fps games, this way might get some attention from the COD kids... Should be turned off for competition tho.

It's not as bad as you think. It was a lot worse in Nexuiz, because there wasn't even a HP stack limit. In Xonotic your stats always try to regenerate/rot back to 100/100.
In default Xonotic settings stack is limited to 200/200 with any kind of HP/armour pickup, but there's config WIP (constantly, with communication between our 1v1 players and the devs) geared towards more competitive crowds called "XPM". I'm not sure about the details as I'm not interested in this part of the game that much, but I know the difference will be in stacking abilities, and projectile settings, meaning in default you can destroy eg. a rocket in the air, blowing it in your enemies face, in XPM you can't.

These things are little bit different than what you might got used to, but if you think after, HP regen means you have to play a bit more aggressively, so there's a chance gameplay will be even more fast paced, and this is also what makes Xonotic unique, and hence tried not to be the "millionth quake* clone".

This is the reason mostly. In case I wanted to play Quake, I'd just play Quake, with Quake physics, weapons, etc. Also, we like to tinker with stuff ;)

Though it might sound harsh, but sorry, this is not our intention, to please the community of ESR. We have our own veterans too from Nexuiz times who like the game physics and weapons the way they are, and also, we have casual gamers too. We'd like to create a game that is both fun to play for n00bs and for those too who were born with a mouse in hand and built-in aimbots in the eyes. It's a freaking hard job, you can't totally please both the competitive and play for fun crowd at the same time. They are the same importance for us. We try to bring a unified balance, that can be fun for both parts. What we already learnt, is that some things will ultimately differ (like item and weapon placement on normal and "pro" versions of the same map like q3dm6).

Thanks :) I hope you didn't misunderstood my message: ESR and competitive is important for us and has a high priority, but we won't sacrifice the "fun part" instead, and won't turn our back on the casual players either.

However, what I truly ask: try the soon to be released 0.6, and tell an opinion what you'd like to see, what would you change, but also, what do you like. Saying "it's crap" won't helps us by any means, because we'll never truly know what to change or just tweak.
I know I might ask a lot, but there are reasons you should try it anyway, because:

1: it's free, nobody asks you a penny for trying, so you can't loose anything there.
2: bandwidth and hard drive space can't be an issue, Xonotic is still tiny compared to commercial hits nowadays or even a few years ago
3: you might get a chance to have an enjoyable game if you provide input.
4: did I mention it's totally free? ;)

Please don't equate Quake fans with ESR. Even though I enjoy QL, I used to enjoy UT99 and other FPS. If you guys make a better game than Quake, and it ends up being more popular thank Quake, it would be awesome. So good luck with that. However, in order to make something better one has to understand what's already done right. Good game balance is something newbies recognize, not just "pr0s" like Dennis Fong who helped with Q3 game rules. You're doing yourself a disservice by mocking all the hardcore FPS knowledge that has been accumulated.

I really dislike the futureistic look (especially the weapon design). Is it possible to picmip this game? And make the enemymodel one solid color? :D

As a mapper for the project ("artist", but heh how do I hate that form of address :D) and casual gamer, I never understood the need to turn the graphics into shit, but sure, the game is based on Darkplaces, a Quake engine, so you have all the tools to customise it the way you want.

The cvar is gl_picmip (also there's a cvar to only picmip world, in case you'd only like to picmip the map):

Note the relatively small FPS change. That's because the first shot was taken with all possible eye candy on, and they are still present on the picmipped one too.

Also, in 0.6 there'll be a way to force enemy models too client side (the videos were recorded with 0.5, and forced models server side). The "competitive model" is called mega erebus (that's the one you can see on the videos too), and while it's not fully only a glowy blob, with gl_picmip 1337 it will be. Urgh...

It's not about "turn(ing) the graphics into shit", but about making it better. The second one is what you need when you play @144Hz on a professional high-end CRT monitor. The uniform surfaces and the smooth gradients combined with bright enemy models produce a much higher visibility, and (because we so used to it) it also looks and feels much better for many of us:)

Yes,. but I think you misunderstood me a little. If you move the mouse really fast (a flick shot for example), the only thing you want to see standing out from the background is the enemy. You don't want other features and little details there to draw your attention, only the enemy nothing else.
This is true on a 60HZ LCD monitor as well.. I just emphasised on the feel, because picmip 1337 also feels better for many of us at high Hz.:)

On a slightly offtopic note, I just got word from our main coder, that after 0.6 there'll be an option to use simple items too.
Reason it's not there that it needs quite some code overhaul (that's necessary and will be done anyway, but I don't want to bother anybody with technical details), and we'll need to make those models too (though making some simple sprites are not at all hard, just nobody did the job yet), so expect this coming in 0.7 or later. we really don't want anything to draw your attention from fragging ;)

Yes, and the last thing I would like to add to this subject is that there is a huge pile of psychology involved about the picmip thingy as well.
Quakers are using "dumbed" down graphics for more than 10 years, and some of us for more then 15 years. All the best moments, all the successes and all the fun is connected to these kind of memories. You don't need a nostalgic or emo personality to get affected by picmipped graphics after such a long time period:)
Most of the QL players are using all available eyecandy in QL (its shamefully outdated:/), but keep picmip at a high number just to maintain that desired look.

Tbh, the only thing I would add to the picmipped QL graphics is true realtime soft shadows and high quality ambient occlusion... and it would be complete for me, because radiosity and other stuffz can be accomplished with prebaking them into the lightmaps/textures like how it is done now:)

I would also jump to the bait about the simple items, but I have no real feel/idea about weapons:/.. I can't find anything but stupid instagib servers when i want to play, so I only tried the weapons while playing offline a few games:(

On the psychological aspect, for the note: I fall in love with FPS games when I went to high-school, and we had Quake2 in the computer lab (I still look at Quake2 as my all time favorite FPS). The computers were soo old and crappy, we could only play in 320x240 software render, with sv_picmip and sv_mipscale to the lowest settings possible in fullscreen to have fluent game and high FPS all the time. Best days of my life :)

Thx, it took me a good few weeks to tweak that map and fix all issues for 0.6 eg. player clipping so you never hang on wall ornaments, textures for better contrast with gl_picmip 1337 (yes, I do cared for that too :D ), proper hinting for max performance etc.

I'd say wait a few days with downloading, else you might go in rage you have to redownload almost everything again, as 0.6 won't have a patch from 0.5 (simply too much got changed, the two versions are not even compatible).
Also, apart from some nice shaftings and that RL frag on Aerowalk, yeah, your movie suxx :P At least next time use some unified graphics settings.

The menu will have a complete overhaul in 0.6 to move options to a more convenient place, but iirc you can find all the settings in 0.5 in the menu too to completely disable screen flashes, blood, gibs, view bobbing, weapon swinging, bobbing etc.

Exactly my first thoughts since I really dislike tech gimmicks or the overcomplicated weapon systems (like the retarded ammo system in Warsow for example), but strangely, it doesn't feel like that when you play it.
Yes the movement is simpler compared to quake and probably has a lower skill ceiling, but that's what you need when you want to find a balance between the pros and the COD-kids, and - surprisingly - it was fun to play in its own way, and was not annoying for me at all.

Also, there's a not yet written rule, but there are core weapons, and additional ones.
Core weapons are :
Laser, shotgun: you spawn with these, laser is mainly "jumping tool", shotgun has melee on secondary
Nex =rail, with power up function, so you need to wait a little to fire with full potential
Crylink: focusable energy gun, also, bounces back from walls
Electro: the main power lies in the combo ability
Grenade launcher: secondary goes off 0.5 seconds after impact, so you can time it
Rocket launcher: holding the primary fire you can stear it a little, secondary detonates mid air
Machinegun: secondary is a small, but more accurate burst

All the current 1v1 maps only feature these core weapons, and not all of them at the same time on the same map anyway, so I don't think it's too much. Ok, one map has the HLAC, but that'll soon be removed, so I don't count it there.

Fun weapons: minelayer, minstanex, sniper rifle, fireball, port-o-launch, the @!#%'n Tuba and the @!#%'n Accordeon, onhand grapple, but these are NOT present on any competitive maps, they are only in the game for fun and personal amusement.

Those fun weapons are good imo.. Q3/QL also has mines which is very popular among casual players... I know some who only plays because of that weapon, so - even if I don't like it at all;) - they are a must.

That really depends on your taste. There are quite a few predefinied graphics settings, but those are only low-ultra settings, and they don't cover gl_picmip 1337 and other stuff by any means. Pr0 players say that the default HUD config is overcramped, I can't judge that by myself, because I don't care. I once configured my own HUD, then lost my config file (I develop the game, it happens I mess my configs up), and never bothered to redo it. You can literally change every setting you like, but there's no "designed for pr0 players Dennis Thresh Fong approved" config provided by default.

Did netcode improve in 0.6? I tried with 0.5 an FFA match and with ping 70 it was quite laggy, borderline to unplayable.

Just for the note, PCLizard who came in second in the tourney played all the way with 150 ping, from NA to an EU server. I suppose that depends a lot on the server too.

me. I've played some games with americans at 170ping and with japaneses at 250ping. Just for fun and for getting experience in games with high ping. Yes, it was hard to hit from rockets, but eb(rail), lg and rg(shortgun) feel more useful than ql's ones at 85-90.

But seriously, at the moment Xonotic duel gameplay is even more chaotic then in Warsow. And combining fast movement and fast projectiles will lead to situation when this game will be fun to play - but not so fun to watch. And jump sounds absence makes it only worse, IMO.

And is it only me glitching or Xonotic rail equivalent has some sort of splash damage? Also, in one demo I saw damage done through the floor, to the opponent staying on higher level. Again, it happened only once so I'm not sure that it wasn't something else. :)

No, the Nex doesn't have splash damage, but you're right about the damage through floor (and not just floor, but walls too). It's there for all explosive weapons. However, I'm not exactly sure how much qu the damage goes through.

Whoever wants to try this game, don't get the 0.5 version which is very outdated (you get choppy movement and bad netcode online on newer servers).

Gameplay in 0.6 got less chaotic too, due to a slightly increased weapon delay, health/armor cap in duel and weaker weapons which got strengthened - so you can't go +fwd all aim with hectically switching weapons anymore.

I don't know the exact reasoning for that but I think that it's because of the fast weapon switch time which would make jumps very risky otherwise. But there is a sound when the model hits the floor so you can predict your enemies movement. I will try to put a recent duel demo with my ingame settings for you on youtube to show how gameplay is atm. Might take some hours with my not-so-fast pc and crappy upload rate though :x

Btw. the engine has an ingame video renderer, right into youtube friendly ogg. The best thing is that you can render your demos in any graphical settings, the screen might show 2-3 FPS, but the produced video will be still 30 or whatever you set to in the console.

If there are enough requests I think that there is a good chance that devs at least put the classic cl_mouseaccel code into xonotic. As it's easily available @ http://svn.icculus.org/quake3/trunk/code/clie...iew=markup for example it shouldn't be a big deal, but I'm not a coder so I can't promise anything.

Not exactly. Jump sounds are not enabled by default. I'm not sure about it, but I think it must be enabled server side.
Landing sounds are there however, and stepsounds too on surfaces that support it (eg. Metal clangsounds).

Looks like it could do with some good maps... and the weapons toned down? all fights seem to be long distance, players camping the same area waiting for enemy to comeback.

while I don't like xonotic it seems like it's progressing on the right direction, and quite fast.

on the other hand, warsow lost it's way on its 0.32 version, to the point even devs consider ctf a lost cause and now they are going to use the community made game balance after not getting it nowhere right in 7 years. Also it's being developed very, very slowly.

thing is I can't think of a superb f2p quake clone, and I think I've tried all the major ones.
It's pretty sad to see the community couldn't create a single independently released alternative to quake live or to any of the other major commercial fps games, including their mods.

tl;dr: quake live and cpma >>>>>>> warsow, xonotic, urt, openarena, wop, bisou, etc.
