I got a new laptop which has a Nvidia GT 540M and an Intel i5-2410M which is way better than yours and it still doesnt get 125 FPS all the time guaranteed. So I don't think the frame rate your getting is abnormal, its just your laptop isnt powerful enough im afraid.

It should run by far at 125fps, it's still a very old engine. And the windowed and fullscreen fps difference doesnt make any sense.

If you are not getting 125 fps with your laptop you are doing something wrong.

Of course, that, or QL being a piece of shyt, or nvidia/radeon being shyt at drivers, but the hardware is way more than enough for ql@125fps

Your making the common mistake of thinking that because its using the Quake 3 engine it must be the same frame rate. I probably could get 125FPS solid on my laptop but Ive just not fiddled around with it, its just using the same CFG as I use on my PC but its getting over 115FPS all the time.

But honestly, just don't presume that because its using iD Tech 3 it must be 125FPS. Anyway your laptop will most likely only be 60hz so it doesn't make any difference to what you can see.

And in any case, on my old q6600 and 2gb ram I get 125fps on all maps, so with a Intel i5-2410M and 4gb of ram you should get 125fps aswell.

my laptop is infinitely slower and with a much worse video card than both of yours, and i get 125fps no problem on every single map even on huge open maps when they had the 16v16 ctf going on...

Okay, just as I tought this was non-sense. The problem appears to be with nvidia optimus technology: The laptop switches between the gt 540m and the integrated Intel Graphics, to save battery. For instance, when you are at the desktop it should be using the Intel one, and when you fire up a game, the nVidia card should be running.

The problem with QL (and other games like i've tried like ezquake.exe) is that when you open the game it doesn't activate the nVidia card. I know this for a fact because besides my laptop has a led that is blue when the Intel one is active and white when the nVidia one is active, i searched in the ql cfg and found that indeed the last valid render r_lastvalid render was not the nVidia card but the Intel Integrated Graphics. This translates in shitty fps and explains why im getting 500fps in regular Q3 vs 70-125 in QL. Once I or someone else figures out to force the nvidia to work when QL is launched, we should be getting around 500 fps aswell in QL, like it should be with powerful hardware on a old game.

I get similar problems and i know a few people who are experiencing the same, with a PC which can run q3 in 125fps perfectly, in QL its a different story in some maps/fights, crazy shit!

I just can't underclock my shitty-old-crap-slow PC hard enough to get some frame-drops, seriously I'm literally can't downclock it that much.
These system are way too powerful for an idtech3 game, it must be QL fucking up something in the browser what makes win7 and the drivers suffer.

I think its QuakeLive as well, theres no reason why i can run Quake3 perfectly on the same PC.

When you think back, we were hitting 125 fps with like Pentium 3 and 4s, yet PC's which are now a few years old struggle with QuakeLive, i wouldnt be surprised if it was something to do with the friends list or the browser system, every time some one log off/on or something i get further losses or performance problems, even though its all disabled in the Account Settings.

I'm currently investigating, but it's QL for sure what's fucking up something in windows or in one of the drivers. People who experience this issue get insane high CPU usage for no apparent reason, and yes the xmpp implementation is also fishy, but you can still get it if you remove all your friends.

For example, I have a slow ionitx htpc I used to play on at the evenings (because it's silent and I can play on the TV with a wireless keyb/mouse). One that machine I get stable 125 fps when I play offline against bots, but I get drops to as low as 50 fps when i play online, and I'm not even running the bot+servercode that time.

i'm running xp and i still get it. Sometimes, but not all the time it helps me to do a vid_restart. Also, I thought since things were getting locked to right at 60 it might be my vsync- so I went to adv. options to a.) check to see if it was off (and it was), so I turned it back on, then off again & saved my settings. I have it in my autoexec as well to be off, but it seemed to smooth things temporarily.

well, I get no difference between xp and win7, so it runs fine for me on my gaming rig, but I only get the slowdowns on the htpc when I boot into win7.

also: Just force "vsync off" in the control panel for qlprism (quakelive.exe) to make sure.

yea, seriously, the guys saying you need good hardware to get solid fps in QL are just misinformed. they probably have 90 running processes and awful drivers. FPS issues have never been easy.

I get 125fps on this laptop, which is a 1.6GHz single core.. and generally really awful. of course that's only in Ubuntu; in Windows 7 in runs like a retarded zebra, even though I have it down to like 30 running processes with superfetch & blabla disabled.

try reinsatlling your OS. try changing drivers. and then clean your system out properly..

K, finally bought the Asus n53s.

Tried Q3 with edawn, everything maxed out. With "high performance mode" (CPU at 100%) i had pretty stable 125fps.

About to try QL now, will report back.

it's not really overclocking the port, you just increase the polling rate for the mouse (if you do it right and follow the steps), so it shouldn't be a problem otherwise we'd see lots of discussions about hidusbf

but: your mouse might not be able to be run at more than 125 (standard) Hz, I had some logitech mouse that refused to work with even 250, in case the mouse doesn't work after running the programm, just unplug it and plug it in again (different USB port maybe), the default win driver will be used again

USB 3 shouldn't make any difference, I'd leave it free for devices that can make use of the increased USB3 bandwidth

Yes, and the only thing that can be learned from that is that, whatever registry tweak that used to work, doesn't anymore with newer drivers. Not going back to older drivers to play QL because incompetent id/nvidia can't do better. I'll just force the nVidia to be ON when I want to play on the control panel.

I have the exact same problem. Cant play fullscreen because i get like 60fps :(

Here are some new fucking problems:

When playing Q3 (i use edawn) the game for some reason, after a while, goes really dark, and I have to change the gamma value to get it right again (for example, if I use gamma 1.2, i set gamma 1.21, then go back to 1.2). This also hapens with ezQuake, and can't remember if it happened with QL.

When playing Q3, I get a weird looking color palette. It's not terrible, but it's not right. It feels like when you are not using depthbits 32 but 16, you know, that feeling on the colours, something like that. But I am using colorbits and depthbits on 32 so I dont know. I can also notice it on the projectile trails like the smoke on the rockets for example, i notice some sort of pixels on it, it just doesnt look right. For some reason it looks just like it should when i window it. In QL it looks perfect.

Your laptop's screen runs at 60hz. You only need to stay above 60fps now that movement is decoupled from your FPS.

Nah you can see how it runs smoother at 125 than at 60 regardless of that.

Smoothness would be related to cl_maxpackets and rate. 60hz is 60hz no more or less. 125fps is not 'viewable' on a 60hz screen.

I still notice a smoothness difference between:

com_maxfps 60 cl_maxpackets 125

both at 60hz of a laptop

Viewable -no. But it's twice as responsive and therefore is MUCH better than 60fps. Also QL needs 125fps to get the best out of the netcode.

In CPMA I get solid 125fps, but as soon as I tune up my config, the game gets choppy as hell... not a fps loss, runs @ 125 all the time but the choppiness is tremendous.

i had similar problem recently. about the comments posted by someone who got a new laptop with a 540m, i also have a new one with that and it runs QL with 125 fps fixed stable :)

All you need to do is to check if ur laptop is using the 2nd graphic card and run QL always with the nvidia one :)

I actually have the same problem but not on a laptop and i have noticed others on desktop computers and its mainly amd/ati card users...

Im running quad core 3.1ghz 8gb ddr3, amd 6870 ... i like to run quake maxed out 1080p everything on it worked fine on my old xfx 9800gtx and the amd 100000 better then that old card...i can run bf3 on high fine without fps drops and in 1080p..

but in quake live its BAD its at 125 and it just drops randomly on quarantine, asylum etc, and its not everywhere on the map only certain places or corners when you look into them.... now the problem is fixed if i down grade my drivers to some old crap and it works but bf3 or other new games run like crap with those drivers....for now i just cap it at 85 fps till there is a fix for it...

is there any fix or am i SOL...i know im not only one having the issue my rig rapes this game there is no reason i shouldnt get 125 all the time....

Nothing is wrong with QL! The engine, the netcode, the sounds, the mouse... everything is perfect, and it's you and your - otherwise perfectly working - computer what's faulty:p

To override nVidia Optimus - add the program you want to use to the Program Settings in the nVidia Control Panel. In the case of QL it will be Firefox. Same thing happened to me when I tried to play on my laptop.

I've changed nVidia settings so that Chrome is forced to use the dedicated GT540 graphics card, but game still suffer from low FPS (around 50-120), with tweaked settings for max performance. Hardware is Acer 4830TG.
With my old Acer 3830TG I got constant 125FPS on high settings. So as I've seen many others say, this smells like a problem in QL itself. It ran fine during Beta stage.

I honestly think it might have something to do with QL. I play on a laptop also and normally get a solid 125, but recently I've been having bad drops. Like every few minutes I'll go down to 60 for about 30 seconds, then back to 125, and so on.

I've done everything I can think of short of reinstalling the OS and nothing has fixed the problem. It's helped a little bit, but it just isn't performing like it should, and I've never had this problem before.
