Sure it was awesome back in the days, but streamers do an excellent job bringing the games to us, not to mention the relentless spam on lvl^ which usually ends up with little to no bans, because they strive to recreate the perfect GTV experience.

I, for one, do not miss GTV.

Yes, though its not a big deal becuase bandwidth and tech have moved on so much.

But GTV would be perfect becuase you can control who and what you see, what persp, in many ways its like the future of TV.

Imagine every individual footballer had cameras pinned to them so you could see the game through thier perspective
You can follow rooney, or messi or whatever player you wanted at any time, that would be amazing, but its reality for gaming for a long time.

It will be for tv one day, but where as games faced a bandwidth limiation that spawned GTV, tv faces a similar problem, but its only a matter of time before it becomes cost effective.

What would be nice is a site where all the streams currently showing quake are gathered.
For example I'd like to see some games from the ctf nations cup and I have found some vods but I never knew when the stream was live because it wasn't posted here on ESR which is my only source.
Would be great to see this integrated into ESR, but it doesn't seem like this site is developed any further :/

although broadcasters would probably prefer to have people going directly to their sites due to traffic and site ads.

whats needed more atm is some spectating tools like multiple POV viewing, map view of a situation, easier player switching etc.

would be nice to have a qw/cs style top down map to be able to switch to, would be able to have little highlights showing how a team attacked quad for instance or how a team is defending a certain area. would also be nice to have this saved to the demo or a separate file recorded. the one in qw is awesome!

not everybody wants to listen to 2 geeks chit-chating during the game and those pov swappings are fucking annoying.I would preffer watching my own pov without disturbing and to be able to hear all the in-game sounds.Those that like streams fine, watch them and those that dont...should have an option we deserve it!

It wouldn't be a bad thing to have, but for LAN events I wouldn't expect anyone to put up GTV for a streamed game. I'm guessing HLTV wasn't on for the IEM.eu 1.6 finals cos the stream numbers were insane.

rofl ql has become so terrible that even people expectations have lowered to fit id software pathetic standards.

i think if gtv was built into the site directly it could still be quite epic, image when during big tournaments every quake live user could just join gtv with one click and could follow compeitions withoput any stream lags, bad quality, annoying configs and what not...
on top of that it would be a real gift for smaller competitions and there are many more possibilities like automatically starting gtv streaming for the 10 highest ranked matches in ever mode...

They need to integrate the two. Isn't that what SyncError meant by "we want something better than GTV" two years ago?

I think it's needed. Look at bigger events with lots of matches (Quakecon for example). GTV could be offered every match, you can follow cypher or anyone the whole way through a tournament. Or your favorite CTF team, or TDM team. You could offer GTV's for matches in online tournaments too.

Leagues will try to convince you that GTV isn't needed, but they're only looking out for themselves. Quite frankly, if GTV was available, a league like ESL could just not use it for matches they want streamed (they do this for CS all the time).

if they integrate a GTV i would be all for it but they would need to add alot of features like people have suggested here. integrated into the site, shoutcasts available and option to turn them on/off and things such as qw style top down maps or something like this.

eh nice logic there. ur saying its that a stream which will never reach the video quality of gtv, doesnt have toggleable casting and certainly doesnt have top down maps, is good enough for you. and then you go on to say ull only accept gtv if it comes with all these features??

For sure, streaming has come a long way since the days of wsvg/wcg Q4 tournaments, but a stream will certainly not match the "video quality" of GTV in the near future.

I understand the point being made; however, if GTV were to be implemented it wouldn't be stuck ten years in the past either.

GTV with:

View swapping without having to change room/channel (not a big deal, but would be nice)

MVD ability to have screen in screen; would be nice for duels to be able to toggle it on/off at will

Ability for users to tune into a selection of casts (in audio form ofc) covering the game/tournament your watching

Would be really, really nice :)


For me though, the ultimate scenario would be to have GTV with a stream built into it; for interviews/event coverage; which you could toggle if the coverage was not to ones taste, and tune into some practice games etc

OR, a stream system which had the ability to activate your QL client and connect you to the relevant GTV server, giving you all the benefits of a well hosted cast/show and silky smooth uber quality in game view that a normal stream simply cannot equal.

I know that last two options are quite far fetched, but one can dream :)

One thing I would love to see again/being used right now is an audio only cast put into a .pk3 file (I remember watching one years ago of a tourney 2 match); it was really, really cool at the time, and the closest we can get to GTV in quake live right now. I feel casters should at least give this a shot, see what the feedback is :)

gtv is a must. Just think about how many matches are lost because it was not possible for viewers ro record a demo like it was in Q3. Tons of matches only survived as gtv-demos.
QL may become a game of no history without gtv.
A spectator must be able to:
record a demo
switch POV whenever he likes (and not when somebody else likes - or even worse, followkiller)
adjust gfx, fov, models etc. to his liking.
(In the future a point and klick interface to integrate some casting for people who want that)

Streams don't provide any of that.
One the other side, you get horrible gfx, too noisy/soft ingame sounds (if at all), too much bla bla (especially in duel), bandwith eating without benefit.

Whenever I watch some QW 4v4 match or Q3 via q/gtv and then later try to watch QL via stream it takes quite some time to readjust to this horrible low standards that QL coverage provides (and that only exists because of volunteers, not because of id).

Wrong. GTV is needed. But I do agree stream has come a long way and should stay as well.
