You can play it in FFA which is pretty fun. The chain gun is profit just for the Q2 style. Not sure how it'd work out on duel. Would definably work in 2v2 TDM if you changed the chaingun for LG (Q4 style)

It was hugely flawed in Quake 4, too linear, to easy to control.
Too open or cramped. And it was also in Quake 3 and it never took of there either.

It's narcissistic to think people would take your content (a poor quality picture of a mouse with holes in it) and treat it as their own, which is why you put your name on the picture in the first place.

It was worth it, they don't talk so much shit anymore.

When they do, I just flash a picture of 5 years worth of their benefits and it resets their basis of comparison for a week or so.

But they always come back and talking more shit and so the cycle continues.

How much weight did you remove with this mouse mod ? What did you use to drill ?
I guess it's fragile now ; a "slight" rage smash would break it nah ?

I'm not sure how much weight I removed, but it was 15-20 percent lighter and best of all the cage of the mouse flexed when you gripped it, so it had a lot more feel to it.

I just used a drill bit, it took about 30 minutes and its an easy mod. I also drilled the base which was a bit overkill, but at the time I was gaming a lot so it was worth it.

Not sure if I would appreciate the flexing ability compared to a firm grip.
Also I wonder if there could be some sort of light thin plastic which could be easily used to cover the holes, in case it feels awkward.

It feels grippier with the holes, the only problem is dead skin can collect which isn't nice.

If you really cared you could place some fine netting inside to keep it out and off the sensor.

It flexs, but its mostly when you grip it hard on purpose,
generally, there is a very small flex in it which makes it feel like its molding to your hand. Its good IMO.

This map is not shit in all, but this map was created to FFA style cuz it was released to q2 in 1998.
That is, this map were made for FFA, the main and popular game mode of the season! Only after the players adapted to play this map in duels n' TDM.

So do not curse the map just because you DO NOT KNOW how to play it. Use your brain to made a strategy to play it, this is not so difficult. :)

btw if you noticed the lack of curved surfaces you might see that its actually a direct import from the q2 file and retextured. Don't think this version of the map will get into ql fulltime

I actually like that it's a direct import. With double jumps now the movement actually works nicely too. Chaingun is meh though.

most q2 conversions have scaling and angles issues; they are just too small. That's why you can immediately tell id (or rather the map creator) spent a lot of time making winters edge.

also chain jumping works flawlessly in most parts of the map, even without rampjumping (which enables higher chain jumps). That's just not possible with a straight conversion.

it's almost perfect to me even when I love ospdm1 and catodm1, and my complaints are very specific. 9.5/10

having a big fucking glowing Christmas tree in the middle of the map doesn't really help though

now some criticism.

First of all there are 2 different things: personal preferences and actual fidelity to the original.
You can have 10 different versions of the map and all of them can be marked with a perfect 10, for example catodm1 and ospdm1 or even tech edge. What matters in the particular case of winters edge is fidelity only (even when I'd really love some additions) so here are some suggestion to achieve that even better when it becomes a premium map.


- There's a bump at YA in the boxes area. It isn't quite noticeable visually but you can definitely feel it when trying to jump from there to MH because it really gets in the way and it wasn't in q2. A bug maybe?.

- It's impossible (or very very difficult) to do this jump now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvhIUObC4Xg#t=00m45s

- The roof of the boxes area should be placed a tad higher because you crash into it when attempting to do some classic q2 jumps, for example 0:48 and 0:52 in the video.

those are not difficult in q2 actually and are rather useful. That's why the map should be fixed in order to have them back.

the ones from 0:45, 0:48 and 0:52 are not that uncommon in their simple versions (forward, no rockets, etc).

also 0:45 (triple jump from GL to the other entrance of boxes) is one of the most useful jumps on that map.

yeh not uncommon, but still ridiculously hard. I don't think I've ever seen anyone do the 0:48 / 0:52 jump during a tdm/duel game and I don't really even wonder why, since there are many so much easier ways to get yourself to MH. Also I doubt that even n00k!e is so good in those that he would choose to do them outside of jump mode.
0:45 is ofcourse one of the basic jumps, when you're doing it forwards. Backwards it's just as pointless as b2r jump backwards in dm6.

I then made the mistake of having a few duels and realised unless you're in shape its just pointless even trying against active players. Zomg Jam its a 3D file extension that works between multiple 3D apps!
