or what motivates people to make a psychology survey

The psychology community is trying to understand what motivates people to play a game and would very much appreciate your participation.

And you need to write xxxx pages about that? Surely, the answer can't be that hard. Also different games may have a different motivation behind them - someone who likes to play wow has probably a different personality than someone like, say, some semi-pro in Quake Live who does it for the competition and not the uber sword that some mongo monster drops when ending a 10h battle with 50 mongos helping you to slay it.

You don't even have to look that deep into it to see the flaws. Anyone who thinks that they can quantify psychological reasoning with a few multiple choice questions is an idiot.

Given the rating scales, I'm pretty sure he's aiming at qualitative rather than quantitative statements.

I'd also assume the survey meets the usual methodical standards in psychology research because he's merely applying well-established questions about a certain personality trait to gaming.

So the only (and crucial) problem I'm seeing is getting people to answer these questions honestly.
Of course, the survey won't be of that much use anyway. But it's just a random thesis, what do you expect? ;)

It's astonishing and embarrassing how the majority of practicing, researching and teaching psychologists still ignore superior concepts like the latent trait theory.

Also: Presenting the questions in an electronic and anonymous way and expecting the participants to pay full attention to them, is kinda ridiculous. But I think I covered that with the problem of getting them to answer honestly.

First, you'll probably have to analyze the different games concerning the specific satisfactions of needs they might facilitate ...

And yep, it does sound like a good idea to check whether FPS gamers are more competitive than MMORPG gamers and whether MMORPG gamers are in stronger need of self-affirmation (given the regular sense of achievement MMORPGs provide) than FPS gamers.


In psychology it's always more complex than it appears at first sight. And that's probably why he's only checking whether MMORPG and FPS gamers differ significantly in their intensity of addiction to their game.
