From my understanding though, Quakecon is HARDLY about Quake.

When John "ZeRo4" Hill and Alexei "Cypher" Yanushevsky showed up in the ballroom for the final, they were told that there was not enough time to play a full final. They were given the option to either play the final in a one-map system (where ZeRo4 needed two maps to win) or play best of threes with a time limit of 10. The players agreed to neither so a possibility of finishing the grand final back at the BYOC area was considered should it take too long.

first off i've never known quakecon as first and foremost a tournament for a dozen competitors.

For us on esreality we probably only care about the matches between top quakers but for the organizers and the hundreds of people there they are just having a party

2nd, did they give away a corvette? Seems the car is worth much more than $5000 and deserves some fanfare because it is a far bigger prize

They dont just do it because they want to be nice.

And it's not like the editors/publishers/developpers get alot of return from events such as quakecon. It actually costs them money.

if you honestly expected Quakecon to be better than this then you've probably never followed the event before.

TosspoT has been to numerous Quakecon's, has worked with Carmac and knows him well, I'd say that was a good base to start any 'criticism' over Carmac's falling standards with relationship to this article, wouldn't you?

It has got absolutely nothing to do with jealously or not wanting to give the users want they want.

I work for SK and can see the stats we get for Quake, the title used was meant to attract the non-Quakers (as was the video in general, though it would obviously interest the Quake community anyway), their average reaction is predictably bovine and irrelevant (as are the comments in this thread) in the grand scheme of things.

Some people like to indulge their own stupidity and feed their desire to occasionally flame, myself included. Making Quakecon into a scapegoat provides us with an excuse to whine about something but it's eventually redundant because, as you well know, Quakecon has and never will be an eSports event, unfortunately. That's why this article and video can be seen to appealing to the masses.
