ye depends on what you'll use it for. i mean it has dual network ports so i guess you could run it as a gateway? and if you check their homepage it can do a lot of things.. you just need to know what you need in order to use the full potential of the unit ^^

you might wanna be caseful with those disks - i got 4 of em in a netgear 1U nas, and they have a reputation for bad sectors and needing RMA's :(

Very cool. I store a lot of media and this would definitely come in handy but waaaaaayyyyyyy too expensive for me.

I have the Qnap TS-209 Pro Turbo II. Its identical software to the 509 and i was vaguely disappointed. For home use i think the better option is to get an intel atom preferably one of the upcoming ones with HDMI and 1080p support.

Why i bought the Qnap:
- Torrent
- Mediaserver
- FTP
- Cheap power consuming

What disappointed me about the Qnap:
- Torrents, doesnt work properly on private trackers with encryption.
- Mediaserver, often will not work at all, after a reinstall i did mange to get it working, however the way its integrated makes it hard to update it to add new features, basically i can playback very limited content directly from it.
- FTP(and network drives), the network drives are really slow to open up from windows, at least on my system takes between 20-30 secs for it to show up in explorer. The FTP service works flawlessly though and its become the thing i more or less only use the Qnap for.
- the power consuming is really on the low side which is great for something running 24/7.

What i should have done instead:
Should have bought an intel atom based system, the price would probably be less than what the qnap costs and with windows installed and a vnc server, remote controlling would be easy it would have given me no limitations of downloading torrents and updating to a nice mediaserver would be easier. In fact anything you want to serve would be easier. I'd then be able to both have hosted gameservers, teamspeak/vent server, etc. you name it, anything. I think that is by far a better option. The power consuming of such a system is low as well.

i have the 'acer aspire revo' which is atom+ion based, hooked upto the tv via hdmi in 1080p. im still yet to really test it with videos and such as i want to get a wireless keyboard for it. the specs are ok, 1.6ghz atom, ion chip based on 9400m nvidia graphics, 2 gig ram, 160gig hdd, hdmi and wifi. came with vista installed which just made it nearly none useable but ive installed win7 on it now and it runs very nice. dont know what avg joe thinks to the performance when he boots it up with vista on though =(
it runs more or less completly silent and uses something like half the power of a light bulb to power. once its all set up im just going to add a tb external hdd to it and leave it on all the time.

overall so far seems like quite a good option for a media server etc as well as being able to run older games and emus whilst being able to play hd content straight from as well as music.

Can it actually play 1080p? I have a desktop now but it has such a shit cpu/gfx card that it doesn't actually do 1080p without epic stuttering.... 5.1 surround would be nice too :D (and bluray player :P)

ive just been setting it up, and ive tried 5 1080p movie samples (.mkv) and all have worked flawlessly. the actual machine can do 7.1 channel audio over hdmi.
you can also mount it to the back of a monitor to reduce space considerably =)
i think its an excellent machine and mine will be left on as a media server and download machine from now on.

for home use: just buy some old laptop + external hdd

well, considering u could get a fully working atom system for say.. 4k playmoney i bet you still wouldnt loose 3,7k playmoney on innstalling and confing freenas/winserv2k8/2k3 :)
