It's not a great thing that QL is a closed platform. But, it is not bad as well.

Keep in mind that it was the fragmentation of the whole q3 scene (some people playing vq3, others cpm, others FT, Defrag, excessive plus, etc) was one of the factors that made it an unpopular platform altogether, tournament wise. The number of players signing up to the cups, as well as the number of spectators watching those competitions, were never close to the numbers of actual quake 3 players. Players from CPM would not want to compete in vq3 (or any other mod/game type/whatever) tournaments, and vice versa. Due to this fragmentation, Quake 3 was not really that much of a subject of interest for the sponsors. The numbers of tournaments that you wanted play or watch yourself was also decreased because of that.

Now, when the player base is concentrated and unified on one website and physic, Quake Live will most definitely be a more attractive game for sponsors and players.

Of course, I miss some fun mods, checking them out at LAN parties with friends, and so on. But, overall, I'm rather happy with that decision.

Two things are concerning me atm:
1. Hosting servers. Will there be a possibility to host your own internet and LAN servers. This is a necessity imo. At least with the LAN part, because if there is going to be a VERY broad hosting service from ID in every major and most of the minor countries with a Quake Live scene, I'll be just as well satisfied.

This hasn't changed. Now there are simply 3 groups that we are split between.

cpm players are still less likely to play in vq3 cups, as are vq3 players in cpm cups
but
QL players and vq3 players are much the same, so the likelihood of a vq3 player in a QL cup, and vice versa, is much higher

That hasn't changed between VQ3 players playing CPMA VQ3 or even CQ3, though.

ive been playing cpma/vq3 and cpma/cpm for a few years now, QL since july
ive played a few games of cq3, but not sure of any specific maps meant to take advantage of the movement of cq3
just ztn
and that has like 1 or 2, maybe 3 decent ramp jumps worth doing
cq3 just feels awkward with it's similar movement to vq3(no air control) and q4(ramp jumps)

but then the groups are probably like this:

98% QL
1,8 % VQ3
0,2 % CPM

So he's merely trying to point out the unification of people who played mods before, which is outside the scope of casuals since they play regardless of mod anyway. That being the case, the split between mods is just as bad as it used to be, and the ratio of casuals to serious players is only moderately more than it was before.

I fired ql insta this morning and there were people playing. they looked pretty casual.

What's wrong with casuals? The thing is that casuals make the game so strong. Look at CS, WC3, or WoW. You will still have your favourite part of scene playing -- the pro gamers -- the difference being that you'll also have a crapload of noobs trying to be on their buddy lists :))

I was not bashing casuals, but merely responding the point you were making about the unification of players through a forced system and how it is just as bad now, but split 3 ways. Some of the casuals moved from VQ3 (not OSP) to QL, but there is now a split between OSP, CPMA, and QL.

Unless you can get rid of Q3 (which is impossible), you can't get rid of the split with a newer platform that lacks the old features.

You're attempting to defend an argument with an entirely unrelated and irrelevant side issue. Casuals were outside the split situation since the very beginning, and QL has only managed to make the problem of a split community WORSE for those that make the informed decision to play a certain game/mod to begin with.

which has no relevance to a split community. The split issue only matters in the upper tiers, where the game has been hurt the most due to QL, and will suffer the most when QL fails.

Of course. Just as there are people still playing Quake World, Quake 2, Quake 4, and so on. But, the majority of the players will most likely stick with Quake Live and there will be no further apportionment among them.

How not? Forums still exist and vehement purist OSP/CPM fans will still speak their mind, and people will still split. In the next month or two, when QL really starts to die, you're going to see a worse average in each than we had before.

Sigh. iD are trying something revolutionary that no-one has done before, that can actually save the DM community. How many people are playing QL online? compared to the previous iD dm game that was based around the traditional id game model (q4)?

Yeah, it sucks that we can't have custom content, and can't host own servers. The advantage is a unified community, a free game, not having to deal with updates, etc... and i'm one of the people who will suffer the most from this, as i don't see us getting an SA server anytime soon.

You can't host servers but private passworded servers will be available for a price down the road.

I think the largest concern for them right now should be developing of maps and game modes that appeal to the largest player base to keep them playing and draw new players. The competitive stuff has to wait.

The fucked up thing about all of this is that once mass invites went out last summer, the NA q3 scene vaporized, yet you see and hear this same opinion over and over and people continue to play QLIVE while CPMA servers sit idle for days. How is 5v5 TDM on dm6 over and over with almost 18 total players (cause most quit midway through) any fun? I haven't played much QLIVE since open beta (maybe 5 hours) but I think I've only played 1 or 2 matches were my net was below 50 and I'm not a good Q3 player. Guess I'll go sit on a CPMA server for 45 minutes till someone maybe joins....
