Scroll down to "Was Race of Candidates a Factor to You?" (nationwide)

Total - Obama - McCain - Other/No Answer

Yes (19%) - 53% - 45% - 2%
No (80%) - 51% - 46% - 3%

Whether or not the answer is positive, the percentages for Obama and McCain are roughly the same, meaning that the race of the candidates was not as big a factor nationwide as some would think. In comparison, the percentages vary a lot more when it comes to the age of the candidates, which was apparently a much more important factor.

bologna. those exit polls are only slightly more useless than the normal exit polls. people who voted for obama are largely "anti-racist," so of course they won't say that race was a factor. but quite obviously it was, if you look at the media and what people are saying: "we've come so far that we can elect a black president" and so on. if race weren't a factor, then why is this even being mentioned?

clearly it is. obama won because he's a celebrity.

But the interesting question is:
Did that help him or not, or differentliy put would have more white people voted a "white" obama and so many blacks voted for McCain instead.

That's my point: I'm not saying it wasn't a factor for individuals, but looking at the results GLOBALLY, it seems to have evened out. Looking at these numbers, the percentages for each candidate for those who thought it mattered and for those who thought race didn't matter are more or less the same.

I think he won because McCain has terrible foreign policy, flipflops on whether he even knows how the economy even works, keating 5 scandal, etc. Race only played a factor among the dumbest, and the racist people that don't want to have a black president balance out the black people that voted only because he's black.

He is an outright flipflop of what he used to believe in.. He was "the most liberal republican" in 2000, and sold his soul for one last chance to be elected by adopting all of bush's policies and used the help of biased media to even get this far.

1984 Walter Mondale 90% Ronald Reagan 9%
1988 Michael Dukakis 90% George H.W. Bush 10%

2000 Al Gore 90% George W. Bush 9%

All those Democrats were white, obviously :) Just because ethnic minorities voted for Obama doesn't mean they voted for him because he was Black, or only because he was Black. The only possible indicator is the one I linked to. That said, and like someone mentioned, you still have to be careful with these numbers, but like I wrote I think it's interesting that for those who said race DID matter to them the percentages are almost the same as for the ones who said it didn't.

AFAIK, at least in the U.S., being married has a huge beneficial influence on a couple's ability to adopt. Being a single parent and getting cleared for adoption is a difficult task.

No, you don't.
The amount of votes each states gets does scale with population, but the majority of states award ALL votes to the winner, despite the margin that he won. So even though Obama only won Florida by 1 percentage point, he gets awarded the whole 27 votes (and not 14 for him and 13 for McCain).

Whats funny is that not everyone' vote counts equally.
For example:

If you take the lowest populated state in the country: Montana, which also has the lowest amount of voters. Montana counts for 3 electoral college points.
Now you take California which is the most populated state in the country. California counts for 55 electoral college points.

If you do the math of voter turnouts in comparison of Montana to California, you'll see that a resident voter in the state of Montana's vote counts for about 15-20% more than that of a resident voter in the state of California.

Number of votes = Number of Senators + Number of Representatives. Since every state gets 2 senators, the ratio votes/population will be inaccurate with smaller states.
Take larger states and it becomes more obvious:

No, not actually. The popular vote count has never been exceptionally accurate, and it never will be. Some of those numbers are projected and some of them aren't. I don't even think all the states are officially finished counting. In any case, Wikipedia reports several [slightly] different numbers, so there is no "actually."

we never learned much about USA in history classes in my country because by the time we learned about Modernity it was usually the end of the year when both kids and teachers were fed up and school activities were very relaxed.

teachers taught briefly about Columbus, early colonization, then switched back to Europe because it was more interesting.. The Industrial Revolution, Napoleon, wars, French Republic etc.

Yes, it is a good start but over 50% of Americans still believe that a book some priests made up 2000 years ago is the only and ultimate source of truth. Majority of American households have a negative net value while their government spends unreal amounts of money on weapons. They are still present in Iraq, a country they invaded with utter disregard for the United Nations. And check, CIA can still do whatever they want without even having to notify the president.

You are completely misreading my posts. I'm just saying Kerry never strongly came across as someone who would make a good president in the eyes of many Americans. Bush wasn't that terrible in his first term, and I'm not quite exactly sure how else to judge a candidate besides their appearances on T.V. and during campaign speeches etc...99.9% of the American population had no personal relationship with either candidate...

I don't see how that's any different than an American election...Kerry had a weak program and weak promises, he never said anything of substance. I have followed European elections and the politics are no different...All politicians are the same. Campaigns here and in the US are nothing alike.

Since I did stay and travel in the US for quite some time I did actually meet quite a few people who were influenced by the slander.
And while that didn't go for the people I associated with (relatives and friends) there were others I talked to.

If it was just the ratings then A) we would have the same stuff here, cause believe it or not ratings count here too.
B) Those irrelevant information (former job, belief in god, etc.) would mainly be heard in the news and not in campaign speeches.

Our candidates are very different. I mean I wouldn't call people like Palin or Bush politicians in the first place, they are amateurs on a power trip.
Then here (speaking about Germany mainly) it is possible for a man who was diverced three times and has a gf who is 30 years younger to be a candite for chancellor. And become vize chancellor and foreign minister. Also the mayors of Hamburg and Berlin, a position that also givs you some owerrs comparable to a senator are openly gay.
Noone cares.

Yes, they also talk a lot of bullshit, especially after a court ruled that promises during an election are not completely binding. But at least they only talk about political mistakes in the past, what they want to improve and their general program. They don'T run around spreading lies about their opponents.

The difference with our bullshit is that you actually have to think some time to detect it, as opposed to obvious bullshit like "change everything" or "drill baby drill".

While some of these are pretty stupid, I admit, peope high up in the ranks are not really there for their know-how. They know how to present, they know how to mobilize and motivate people. They are liked because they can communicate well. It's just like in any big business really. The guy in the top knows least of the technical matter, but knows best how to portray himself, the company and his interests, while the people at the bottom know the smallest inner details of their numbers and workings.
