i think music is as good as the musicians were at that particular time, i personally prefer at least a small amount of what could be called psychedelia in my music, but that's probably due to a long conditioning process.

i have to agree most psytrance/-ambient is lame and should never have been published. but that's pretty much true for all musical genres imo

So you like one. That's pretty strange. From my perspective all the others flow out of shpongle quite naturally in different directions. It's the same level of skill all the way to my ears, and the technology and techniques have improved.

That album was in 98, so maybe there was some progression or turn you didn't like. Did you ever listen to Celtic Cross? That's Simon Posford (half of shpongle) plus some other guys, released a month after the first shpongle album.

Yeah I own and have listened to Celtic Cross many times over and I attribute it to the genius of youth, owner of butterfly studios back in the day, how come all the early dragonfly releases sounded so good since we are stuck in a "production quality" rut as pertaining to electronic music, yes?

Not to say I am a "production" geek, the best stuff has come from not so refined outfits.

It's unlikely that any sort of abstract production quality has gone down; rather it's probably some specific or specific things you react to. Might be a general downside to way things were done later or a general downside to you specifically; this again might be caused by the general technology/techniques itself, or some general psychological tendency to gloss over as an effect of it.

Aside from Luomuhappo, as far as low-key experimental guys goes, i've heard some guy "Kundara" which is pretty awesome. Seems like he has created some new music on http://www.myspace.com/kundara .. and there's a song at http://www.last.fm/music/Kundara .. sounds a bit strange now, but the first promo album he made showed some awesome talent (he's 1987 an that promo was 2004 - so around 17 back then)

Listened to some psy-harmonics now; seems like they have more of a raw sound.. I agree it can be a bit hard to listen to the glossy overproduced sounds - they can quickly become too shiny, like overused gloom in graphics, or somewhat similar, but in the direction of over-clean like scientology-style/architecture ;)

for all that, i think they do pretty well, it's a minor side effect of the awesomeness that comes with it imo

6-d hasn't released any chillout afaik but if you like the finnish weirdo style trance they've released a bunch great stuff, for example "No Possible Soundz vol.3" is epic and one of the few cds i've bought lately.

Exogenic releases finnish psytrance, "Haltya"'s new album is especially great. they released some chillout stuff before they formed Exogenic Breaks though, "Mac Mavis" and "GAD" specifically, which i like. i haven't heard most of the music they've released on the Breaks sublabel, it's mostly laidback breakbeat music i gather, but i like and can recommend "Koneveljet - Brothers in Machine" and "Accu - Accu"

Psy-Harmonics releases mostly music from the general area in and around Australia, they released the first Texas Faggot album (which is their best one imo) though. some "chillout" they've released that i'd recommend checking out:
