My keyboard is a USB keyboard, and not a PS/2 connector. Someone one another forum told me to use an older keyboard that uses a PS/2 cable instead of a USB. Then I should be able to access the options in BIOS.

Also, I tried downloading the latest BIOS version for my board from the official MSI website, but I can only download it as a WINRAR zip file.

I have no idea how to use WINRAR, and I don't know how to run the program as an application.

to update bios: you must extract the file out of the winrar zip (its pretty easy, open the file with winrar, and drag the file out onto your desktop or something) then place that extracted file into an easy to reach location, like C:\ so the file would be C:\newbiosfile

once in the bios (provided you have a working keyboard), there should be a flashing utility where you can browse to the new bios file. then you just select it, and hit upgrade (or something similar, i've no idea what your bios is like) and it'll take a few min and be done. make sure that you DONT lose power or power off the pc, otherwise you'll brick your mobo :E

as for the keyboard, try finding a ps/2 board or a ps/2 to usb adapter (i have one that came when i bought my wmo, for example) which are relatively cheap and easy to find.

I try to open the file but an error message pops up saying that windows doesn't recognize the file type or something to that effect.

no. updating from BIOS setup is a pretty modern invention. most BIOS flashing programs in the past ran from a DOS boot diskette.

you have one of those gaming motherboards, try using WASD instead.

Normally it means that the bios uses pgup and pgdown to select items.

if usb is not supported in bios its time to buy a new computer tbh ;(

enable USB legacy support in bios (iirc if you reset your bios it's gonna be enabled by default in both AMI and AWARD bioses)

uefi really needs to have an integrated update function with a backup rom so we can finally get completely rid of the over 9000 year old bios and its bad habits..

I never saw a mainboard which had flawless bios at it's release date, so updates are necessary.
The problem with updating under windows is the other running processes and the other "things" in the memory.
Many ppl have viruses/mailwares for years without knowing about it, and many untested overclocked setups are running with small memory/calculation errors which would only show under extreme stress-tests, but still can brick a mainboard with a simple biosflash if the system is heavily loaded with processes.
The risk of a biosflash-fail is way much lower in a shell-only clean boot.

While UEFI is cool and will expand firmware interface to a non-x86 platforms, but doesn't completely replace the bios, since it wont specify low level functions (like POST for example), they will just hide that part from us in the future.

true but even if there are minor flaws there is no need to update it if everything runs fine for you

that uefi is far from perfect is kinda obvious not just because it makes the system vulnerable to attacks, but i still think it is a step in the right direction

You recommended a Windows based bios update utility, and I was the one who pointed out that updating the bios should be the last resort only, and even if it's required it should be done with booting into a clean shell.

I've tried WASD, the arrow keys, the keypad, page up and page down, + and -, and NOTHING works.

I want to manually increase the fan speed of my CPU cooler. The only way to do that is through the BIOS.

This is very frustrating.

1, if you can enter the bios, your keyboard is working for sure, but you could just buy a crappy used ps/2 keyboard for 2 bucks!

Even if we are trolled, it's a well known problem with usb keyboards, so the info could be useful for others. Clearing the cmos will enable "usb legacy support" by default which solves the problem in most of the cases. (or just use a cheap ps2 keyboard)

For people coming here by Google for arrow keys working on SOME BIOS pages/settings, but not all:

Check if you have a BIOS password (Boot password) setup. That should not matter, but if you have an additional MASTER/Admin password in BIOS, it will restrict the BIOS login with the user password to info-functions only. So in that case the arrow keys will work in the information-display pages/functions of BIOS only.

Solution in that case: login with Admin/Master account of BIOS, maybe remove this account (You must know the password to do this).
