But there's something sinister going on in this community - think about it.

Even when certain players showed signs of penitence, displayed regretfulness and begged for forgiveness for something as petty as playing a video game, the community shunned and sent them to the 7th depths of hell.

Even some that were allegedly wrongfully banned were mocked and insulted. To even think about giving people a second chance is considered a malevolent though. The community chants in unison, "Once a cheater, always a cheater!"

Then this guy gets allegedly wrongfully sent to prison and everyone starts talking about giving people a second chance, everyone makes mistakes in life, don't mind the past, think about the future.

Where is this coming from? Are the statements coming from the same people? Are we that convoluted and hypocritical that we're lettings wrongdoers go free because it doesn't directly affect our tiny world, it doesn't in any shape or form change our spectrum? - as in, as long as you're not touching my video games and using a 3rd party client to gain unfair advantage over me and beating me while I ponder and cry about preventing such things from happening, insulting developers and even threatening them because this insubstantial thing affects my life so much, that I'm willing to hunt down people who cheat in video games?

Why do we react so harshly when someone attacks and threatens the integrity of a video-game, think of them as subhuman scum, even go so far to wish death upon them - but when someone is dealing drugs and admits that what he did was wrong, we start pondering about second chances and become compassionate.

Those are two different contexts. In a "game" context, it's easier to have a stricter moral stance than in real life. After all, games live off rules. In the "life" context... everyone knows she's a bitch, right? :P

I'd say most people do find cheating worse than dealing drugs on some level.
Cheating pisses me off, I don't see it any other way than some sad fuck deliberately ruining other people's fun for his entertainment.
On the other hand I don't have a problem with a guy selling weed. That's simplifying it, and I'm not making arguments for permanent bans or blindly defending av3k, but it makes sense to me that people react that way.

How would you react knowing that some guy tried to hook your kids with coke? In the end, it's YOUR CHOICE if you try, buy and use weed (or any other drug). The dealer won't come barging in your house without ringing the bell and won't force you with a semi-automatic rifle to smoke this blunt, you fucking stranger OR ELSE.
The dealer himself might also has his / her circumstances and those circumstances might not be as simple as black or white (especially in poorer countries). It's all subjective. There might be cases where the punishment is legit and cases where it's just not. If nobody gets hurt in the process (besides the buyer's health but he/she is aware of it and still chooses to use substances), it's preferably the latter.

On the other hand, sad fuck cheater enters your game uninvited, ruining it (and ruining it for others as well if it's not duel), only for the purposes of his underachieving life's pathetic little amusement and for the fake feeling that he accomplished something which he would never be capable of otherwise.

I'm seeing an assload of people with the same negative attitude that you described towards Av3k. That negative attitude just has the small/medium majority as opposed to the overwhelming majority.

When someone cheats in a video game, it's easy to say "yeah, whatever, fuck you." Sure, cheating in a video game amounts to less, but it's 100% clear that they've done something wrong. What Av3k did, or what he's claiming to have actually done, is a little more morally dubious than cheating in a game. There are lots of flavors of "drug dealer" and it's not even exactly clear what Av3k has done. Especially the more marijuana'd people on this website or people with progressive views about drugs are going to be more supportive.

Plus, it's Av3k. You can't deny that he gets some points because he's Av3k. No one would care if someone made a post saying "We can't go into details, but Ephemix is having financial problems related to that publicized drug bust from 6 months ago and has already exhausted all of his personal means." If I had to guess, people would have the same "yeah, whatever, fuck you" attitude. But, Av3k, in the same circumstances, and people are willing to dial their sympathy up a little.

If Av3k was selling drugs to my cousin, I would definitely want him in prison and I wouldn't care if the sentence was unfair. If Av3k was selling weed, and weed exclusively, to my cousin, I might reconsider depending on how fucked up my cousin's life was as a result of him using weed/being in that circle. People keep saying "HE'S A DRUG DEALER LET HIM ROT", well sure. But when I think "drug dealer" I think cocaine, meth, something crazy like that. When people dial up their sympathy, they might see Av3k as "selling softer drugs to willing and knowledgeable people where ultimately no one gets hurt" and that's probably not worth 7 years in prison. The truth of the matter is probably somewhere in the middle.

I think this is more about the rules and how we all perceive them. We agree to certain rules and we all know that those rules are carved into stones for all of us. It's like if your HP reaches zero, then you are dead. It's over, there is no such thing as "please give me a little more back, because I accidentally missed that MH at the corner". We can boil it down to black and white: Zero HP == dead, cheated in game == permaban, etc...

What happened to Avek is not something we all agreed on, we did not have clear rules set up before it happened (well, the law should be something like that, but that's not a subject we keep in mind or talk about here every time). Every one and each of us perceive it by his or her own standards and moral "compass"... that's why it's not that black and white anymore on a community scale.(even if it should be perhaps)

And don't forget that the life of the cheater is not in any danger, he/she is free to stay in the community and play as many other games as he/she like, but the rules can't be changed, 0 hp == 0 hp, end of story.

People cheat for 1 reason and 1 reason only, they don't like to lose, so if they are losing that means they aren't as good as they want to be, that means they will always want to cheat because they haven't got the patience or the ability to be the player they want to be.
