The only arena fps with some hope of a large esports scene is UT4. It's a shame the movement has the grace of a retarded baboon, but i digress....

Perhaps if Quakelive changed so you could play on lan without permission, make private servers, and if Quakecon kept it, Quakelive could hold on. But what are the odds of that happening?

I'm pretty sure doom4 is out of the running. Parkour elements, "brutal" executions, typical doom weapons, and of course available for consoles, the multiplayer will most likely be shit.

Yeah I agree completely, UT movement sux, always has. And doom4 movement will suck too.

It's sad that what makes an arena shooters good, is completely misunderstood by companies making games and the general public at large. And id software now under the pressure of bethesda, will probably never make another proper arena MP shooter after quake live. Because all of their titles will always have to be inclusive of console releases.

I think what we've seen with the revival of the competitive CS scene with CS:GO is impressive thanks to all of the effort valve have put in, they understand the competitive scene very well and have pretty much infinite resources in terms of money etc.
It is definitely possible to revive a large arena shooter like quake in a similar way if the right people got behind it with enough resources, but I highly doubt it will ever happen.

The hardcore arena shooter is dead in the form we knew it.
We just need to accept this fact and move on.

Things like Reborn and Reflex are great initiatives but will only ever get support from the aging quake veterans. I never see these projects growing beyond a player-base that quakelive currently has, which is pretty tiny anyway.
And it's not because these games are bad, its just with limited resources they will never be able to properly educate and market these titles to people outside of the quake community on what makes these games rewarding to play.

If another official Quake arena game does come out it will no doubt be dumbed down for the masses and probably not even garner enough support or interest to be as monetarily successful as any of the other FPS titles out there.

The community will remain and maybe move onto something else after quakelive whether it is reborn/reflex or a revamped vq3/cpma iteration but the community wont grow bigger, its only going to get smaller and remain an underground thing of old people playing campgrounds complaining that no game will ever beat the good old days.

tl;dr Arena Shooters will never be huge, accept it , move on, life is short

what I am missing in reflex is FFA servers,
people are just playing duel ... for casual player this is not good ...
all that wating until you can play, etc. ... in q4 it was once possible to play multiple duels on one map on a server, at least implement something like this ... I just wanna play some ffa, with instant respawn for now ... I dont really like arena either, you always have to wait ...
I liked arena back in the q2 days very much, because I have been very good and was often one of the last men standing ... but as casual player it just sucks, also if you dont know the map so well you often end up in 3-1 situtations where u cant do shit to get out ... I want to have instant respawn games, there I can join immediately, so for now one can only play QL ...

I have heard rumors recently that quakelive is coming to an end sooner than people think. I was in irc only a month or so ago and Sponge was hinting a releasing the source to the community so when quakelive is shut down players can carry on and play on third party servers etc (and would allow mods etc).

Now only this week I have heard stats and forums and due to be shut down with a major announcement regarding an update is imminent...

I think steam was a ditch at a last attempt to bring in some revenue and is possibly failed.

I don't have super secret info, but I have logic: QL will be shut down when Quake 5 is released.

q5 is big mistake if true. 3000 people only care . maybe 1 people of 4 get pro sub is not much monies for so much effort make new quake game.

It's quite obvious why their next game is Quake 5.

- Doom 4 is coming shortly and no one knows if it will be successful enough to start working on a sequel right now (Doom 5).
- Wolfenstein: The New Order was released last year and now there's another game in the works, both made by MachineGames. This means the Wolfenstein IP is not going to be used by id software.
- Nothing happened with Rage 2.
- They don't have any other IP left, but have to continue working on something. Therefore Quake 5 is next and will be made by id software.

We are a marginal part of their customer base. Yes only 3,000 people care about QL, but at least one million care about Doom and Quake and that's because there's 997,000 noobs with $60 each waiting to play them either on the PC (steam) or on consoles, no matter how different those games might be from the first ones.

Oh and don't get me wrong. I agree that since Doom 3 that id software has only made mediocre, uninspired and unimaginative games*, also that history shows other companies have been using their IPs better than themselves and I personally have zero hopes on how good Quake 5 will be to us the hardcore crowd, but in any case it would be naive to think the Quake IP isn't valuable.

*Though I think Doom 4's single player will be fun to play, based on that reports say it's practically a copy of Brutal Doom. Probably will criticized for being short and very much repetitive, like all their games released this millennium, but some parts will be memorable nonetheless and certainly will be better than the disgrace that Doom 3 was. About multiplayer I have zero hopes on it, because their recent games clearly show id software doesn't have anyone on the team that knows about that.


edit: since we are talking about this subject, there's no point in trying to imply info about the game's faith based on what sponge or syncerror say. For one they are bound to lie about it and for second they actually don't know 100% for sure, because those employees (a web designer and a mapper) don't make those final decisions but their bosses do and they can change their mind.

But nothing happened with Quake 5 either. What makes you think Q5 is more likely?

Quake is a bigger IP than Rage is and -most importantly- if they didn't make a sequel right after Rage 1 then they don't have that much high hopes on Rage 2.

It's also debatable that Quake is "bigger" than RAGE. Quake 4 was released 10 years ago. Nothing much happened since then. Unless you count Quake Live I guess but it's PC only so not in touch with the market they would aim for with a Quake 5. Ten years is a very long time and gaming grew a lot bigger since then.

I'm not surprised that they didn't make a sequel right after releasing RAGE. id wouldn't work on two big productions at the same time and they were ready for Doom 4 at this point. I guess they could have prepared a RAGE 2 before RAGE's release instead of preparing Doom 4 but this is quite a risk for a new IP.

Id was never able to get Doom 3 or Q4's multi to take off anywhere naer what the previous games did. Here's hoping a new generation of developers at Id can turn this around fot the next doom game.

i understand all the hype about new games like reflex reborn etc etc but fact is, im slowly getting old and i actually dont have any interest in changing to a game that is not quake im with quake since 2002 with gaps but it was always there, part of the sensation watching and following the scene is that decade long heritage and memories a new game will never be able to even touch on that

I've always wondered if it would be possible to release the game as a Q3 mod, without the Awesomeium UI of course. Could even go open-source. They would probably have to make a few changes to get it to run, but at the same time I wouldn't be hugely surprised if it ran in exactly the same VM.

You can already run ql without awsomium and besides that there is edawn mod for quake 3 that has ql ruleset. I dont see what advantage over that would ql q3 mod have over that

I've played the edawn ruleset and it's definitely not 1:1 Quake Live. Doublejumps are definitely different, and it wouldn't run QL maps without converting them.

My post wasn't about playing QL without Awesomium, or outside of QL, though. It was about the possibility that QL could be released as a mod for the Q3 once Bathesda finally pull the plug, or open sourced for the community to convert and compile if it's Not That Simple.
