as kevz said the worst aspect of ca is how stacked players are. it's also bad for players who may make the transition to other modes where health/weapon management becomes important. the best aspect of ca which stands it apart from the other modes is the round based scoring system.

the best aspect of ca is no self dmg, which adds more dynamism to the whole gameplay, replacing (to a certain degree) strafing with rj-based movements and dodge and so forth

i wish no selfdmg was more common on other gametypes as well (especially duel)

In CA when you dodge someone's rockets and can turn around them they will get you with the splash damage by rocket jumping, shooting at their feet, in duel many very close range (like so close that if you shoot rockets you also get hurt) LG fights wouldn't happen if they didn't have self damage :(.

Its so low in duel it hardly matters, its already heavily reduced from what it should be.

I understand in TDM where 8 players are sharing 3 armors/mega, but when you have two players sharing the same resources it allows for heavier use of self damage movement. Especially true for when in control where you are more likely to want to go +forward.

RL self damage should be upped. There is really no minimum range for RL, where as in other titles the RL has a defined minimum range otherwise you self damage too much. This opens up the shotgun for very close range. Previously the shotgun stood apart from RL due to high potential damage, but since it was nerfed and does not stand apart in any way really. The old high damage shotgun was a bit over the top.

Watching quakeworld you see players avoid shooting rockets when in close because of self damage, this is a good addition to the game!

I am not against zero self damage rockets for movement (in fact I think it is awesome) but for the close fights it creates.. not so much. Traditionally rockets in FPS were somewhat unique as a weapon with a minimum/maximum range. Most weapons are simply "dude is too far away" or "dude is too close". Rockets were an interesting mix of both.

Personally I don't think running in an detonating rockets at point blank makes for very interesting gameplay, but thats just me.

I think this raises an interesting conversation - usually weapon balance is simply damage output vs other weapons, but in the case of RL it also needs to take into account self damage. Perhaps the middle ground to stop +forward rocket spamming into the floor close fight is for the game to simply check - did he damage the other player with shot X? If he did then he takes regular splash damage. Otherwise he takes current, or even reduced. or even zero.

Both conversations are valid and I think your point of improving movement has merit. However they are linked to each other.

I bought up the shotgun mainly as a way to illustrate that there can be a niche for a close in weapon beyond RL.

It could be much simpler, to make CA a little more interesting. Just reduce ammo of all weapons, so you are forced to use them in a smarter fashion rather than rail stalemates or only lg vs lg eye to eye style.

Just the right amount of rockets so spamming/rj-flying would have to be sort of a choice, but its still a main weapon so dont over do it. Shaft shells down to 100 or so. Dont give people 25 rails, 10 will do, maybe even less than that. Not too many grenades, spam stalemates are really facepalm.jpeg. Plasma should get a little ammo nerf but i'd like to see more people use it effectively. Shotgun shells dont need much ammo nerfing tbh, same with MG.

Personally I wouldnt force too much teamwork in CA. Its still a popular public game mode and people tend to play for themselves or are simply oblivious to this thing called teamwork :D

I have always thought adding quad would make ca much more fun. Same rules as other gametypes, with it spawning between 0:30-1:00 (around that) and respawning after 2 minutes of being picked. Same round thingies etc.

And the Scout powerup that speeds you up!

I'd like to see a /give all pickup on the meet with lowered ammo count.

You go there at the start of the round to pick up like 80 lg, 8 rockets, 4 rails, 4 nades, 50 pg, 5 sg and have to go back to fill back up again to that in 1v1 / 1v2 situations.

Ye... That explains it for me totally.
Always wondered where the other players got their weapons.
Been searching for weapons all the time, even in lava pits and in foggy pits and electrical shizzle pits 'n stuff.
Jumped right in to get ´em.
I thought that maybe the Quake Makers had hidden them weapons down there.
Still the other players were shooting at me, even when I only was searching for weapons and not firing back at them at all.
Lots of cheating campers, there are, whom I call champers.
I mean, there´s no better example for champing, than shooting someone who is looking for weapons at the bottom of a lava pit. No sane human does that.
But now, knowing there's no weapon spawning, I do not have to search for weapons anymore.
I can now focus entirely on firing the bullet shooting gun and become really good at CA.
Beware, you other CA players, for I know now how it works 'n stuff.
Maybe I just AM really good at playing CA after all.
But still, I can't find the red armor and the quad damage either.
I´m tellin´ ya, they´ve hidden those, too.

PRO CA:

1v1: 3-5 rockets, 50 LG, 1 rail, 1 nade, 1 SG, 10MG, 10PG
2v2: 6-10 rockets, 75 LG, 2 rails, 2 nades, 2 SG, 20MG, 20 PG

Would be awesome to play. Real good players rarely need more ammo than above. + the scarse amount of ammo forces you to make every shot count, allowing you to improve your aim exponentially and lets people lay more emphasis on multiple weapons. People get more dynamic because whoring 1 weapon won't win the round no more (only if you hit 3 directs).

the fun thing about CA is you can rocket jump and make speed that way.. with low rocket ammo no fun.. everybody would just walk silent and sneak around corners..

The thing i like about CA is rocket jumps, my opinion is dont ruin it with low ammo...

I play some ctf sometimes, but most of the times i just want to join a server and play a game. CA servers are always filled.

the fun thing about ca is the combat is much more open relative to other gametypes

i was thinking on gungame
you get only one weapon, and you get another one if you kill someone. the last thing is to use the only pummel to kill someone. also if you pummel someone the opponent looses one level.

only problem is that quake doesnt have so much weapons for a long game, so maybe nerf the guns after you used all of them. donno. not really sure we have to go on the ca root and make more turn based games. it kills the point of being a fastpaced game.

any new mod that allows me to send more meat scum to the /quit is fine by meh
