Also, good tune.

Ambient Music Made Easy (42 comments)
Posted by voodoochopstiks @ 07:49 CDT, 19 August 2010 - iMsg
So, this dude took Justin Bieber - U Smile and made it play at 1/8th the speed. And it turned into awesome ambient music. Hilarious.

I also always wanted to be an ambient music producer, so I put Madonna - Hung Up through there, the ABBA synthesizers turned out really nice imo. Quite dark, quite nice.

Both links have the full 35/45 minute version at better quality on soundcloud. Any other ideas for good tracks to put through PaulStretch and play slower?

Barcelona, España? (42 comments)

I've recently come upon the opportunity to move to Barcelona with work and all sometime during early spring, and I am thinking heavily of doing so. Anyone got any tips for what areas of the city I should try to live in/hang out? Preferrably something safe, not too pricey, not too touristy, and with a nice cozy feel to the area(I know it's quite a lot to ask :D).

Anyone know the area at all? Got any tips for activities other than looking at buildings designed by Gaudi? I know the night life is awesome, any clubs to recommend etc? :D

Seriously, it is one of the coolest and most impressive movies I've seen in a long while. It goes so fast, has such vivid colors, and a lot of funny going on. I recommend it heartily. See it on the silver screen!

Shootout with Fatal1ty (34 comments)
Posted by voodoochopstiks @ 16:04 CST, 2 December 2007 - iMsg
This friday I went and had a shootout with Fatal1ty here in Stockholm! The game was Quake 4, the level was Longest Yard(q3dm17 remake). The game ended 19 - -1. He was pretty merciless even to some of my friends from work who usually can't frag even me much. Like quadrailing and killing them right on the respawns for 30s. The ones who couldn't hit him at all were treated better, and given a chance to shoot him, but he didn't ever let them get him below 100hp.

I later came up with the tactic to play completely shit and fall of the map in the beginning, then upping pace while he was toying with me, but by then it was too late. He seemed OK overall, he talked a whole lot about himself, and how he was world champion at this and that game, but I guess that's what people want to hear when they come to see the great Jonathan Wendel.

And I also went and got lob a signed picture!

Dreaming again (36 comments)
Posted by voodoochopstiks @ 03:25 CST, 29 November 2007 - iMsg
Oh goddamn what a weird dream, the whole night was pretty weird, it seems I only slept in like 5 minute segments, waking up,
twisting around, falling asleep again after a couple of seconds. Continuing with the dream though:

My father, my brother, a really big naked baby(like a half meter long, imagine a human version of that world's biggest cat
picture), are out on a field in the countryside, by a lake. We notice weird shaped silhouettes doing weird things on the other side of the lake, it looks like a fight going on on, so we decide to swim over there, my dad takes the giant naked baby in his arms and swims without using his hands. When we arrive, everyone has disappeared, and we're in a little field with a house. The house is wooden and looks pretty old and worn. We look around and can't find anyone, the bottom floor of the house looks pretty normal.

Then my dad calls out that someone is coming, from down the road, and it's a little girl. My dad gets out in the road to greet her, and begins to talk to her. He decides for her to join my brother and me outside the house, but as soon as she gets close enough to see me, she begins screaming at the top of her lungs for a breath or two, without explanation. My dad calms her down and she then begins to tell us about the people who she lives with here, that they transform into animals(and usually common one like cows and horses, I'm not sure how they are evil, but they are), they are mutants with a curse. Then all of a sudden spiderman rises out of a bush, walks up to the entrance of the house, and my dad explains to the girl "Spiderman is a mutant, just like your family as well! He's going to hunt them down and find out what they are doing!". The girl walks away. We decide to explore the house, the house looks fairly normal, but when I reach the top floor which is a sort of attic/top floor room, it's very very dirty with a lot of debris.

Up there I find Oskar from work, committing some crime, I can't remember what. All of a sudden Anders Bodbacka from work appears, grabs me by my feet from the stairs and tries to pull me down the stairs. I manage to shake him off, and all of a sudden a patrol of builders run up the stairs and start remodeling the room, and it looks like with prison gadgets. Balls and chains, a new steel door to go above the stairway and more of the sort. Oskar has now been bound with a gag and is shuffling around on the floor. He is probably the one that's going to be staying in this cell. I decide to try to sneak away, and as I take the last step on the stair, construction workers from above scream "Don't let him get away, he's also committed the crime!", and I begin to run through the corridor on the middle floor. But as I run, I notice the corridor has gotten really really small, and in the end I have to lie down on my stomach, put my arms to my side and shuffle towards the stairs, squeeze barely around the corner by making myself into an L-shape, slide down the stairs and open the door with my mouth.

I finally get out and I tell dad to grab the giant baby(who's oh so adorable but also a bit revolting because of it's size) and my dad and brother follow me out to the back of the house, which is quite similiar to my own house from this perspective. In the window I can see Simon from work going to the bathroom, I wave to him, he waves to me, and then looks down from the window at the ground closer to the house, horrified. I follow his eyes and what I see there is a normal sized naked baby with a bigger head than usual, it's mouth open, and blue shining eyes, it's clearly not human, slowly walking towards my father.

My dad runs back to me and gives me the giant baby, I put its enormous weight and size in my arms. And he then runs back towards the demon baby to try to keep it away from our own baby. A droning noise appears as my dad tries to block the path of the demon baby, and my brother screams "It's too late! Look at his eyes!" and I notice the giant baby's eyes are beginning to glow blue and his mouth is open. I decide to take a deep breath, fill my lungs and scream as loud and as powerfully as I can at the demon baby as well as the giant baby, I notice the color in their eyes fading, and tell my brother and father to do the same, and we make this really really powerful sound, screaming at the top of our lungs, and the demon baby drops dead to the ground, while my giant baby coos a bit and laughs, and no longer has the blue eyes. I ticke it a bit on the belly, then I wake up.

The Modern World (19 comments)
Posted by voodoochopstiks @ 17:01 CDT, 30 August 2007 - iMsg
I’m sitting here watching Koyaanisqatsi, and all of a sudden I get an urge to write again, I had almost forgotten this blog. It’s a wonderful thing, to have a net of security you’ve forgotten about. This net saves me from a fall out of creativity. Writing is but one output for me, yesterday I met a man who was frustrated about only working and relaxing, not having a creative outlet. And then, I realized how lucky I am, to have the job I have, to have the time and the inspiration I have. Oh to be stuck in such a position as he, with a wanting, longing to create, but to lack the ideas, motivation or time to turn longing into a deep and serene sense of satisfaction.

Now that I’m looking at Koyaanisqatsi, and I’m writing; I figure might as well keep going. I thought today about how far from the future our grandparents imagined would exist in the year 2007, but after getting over the sadness of never having ridden a jetpack or had a robot do my housework. I realized that the future we live in maybe isn’t so bad after all. There is so much communication! It’s so great, connect with loved ones, people you don’t know, and learn ideas, concepts and help others learn yours. And it’s not just through the internet as most magazine articles would have you believe. The world has gotten smaller in general, more people speak the same languages, movies, books, political ideas, research, everyone is all of a sudden a cousin, and realize that airplane travel is so cheap that many many people can nowadays afford to see new places, meet new people, and travel outside the country. And plane trips do not happen two or three times in a lifetime, but rather two or three times in a year!

As I write this though, I have something missing in my wonder world of the future of 2007, I still look to the beautiful cloud-spatted sky as I walk home from the bus with a dream of one day riding a jetpack, I stop, I close my eyes for a second, go on my tippy toes, grab my backpack straps in that way that only flying can make you do, and I rise, I can’t feel the asphalt through my sneakers anymore… I pretend the breeze and moisture coming in from the ocean is me entering a gathering of clouds, stratii, nimbus, cumulus. I know it isn’t real, but they whisk my hair, I open my mouth, wedge my eyes a little tighter, and I increase the throttle. I head up above the clouds, on the border of the stratos and the troposphere, I begin to hold my breath. The sensation is getting realer and realer, I’m beginning to forget I exist at all. My hair is ruffled back and forth as I escape gravity, and my troubles desperately cling to my shoes, but I kick them off, sending them falling back to earth, a stray issue grabs ahold of a sock, and I let them go as well, now barefoot, slightly cold, some would say weaker, but I would say stronger, with a feel and a sense for where I am, no longer able to use my eyes or hearing, I feel wind speeds and air density in between my toes. I am now nothing but a highly excited and yellow-haired piece of mass trying to combat wind resistance. I begin to use my size 13’s as rudders, and as I begin to run out of oxygen, I kick my feet back. I take a bit of the cloud I exit from with me, it makes a nice trail as I make a beautiful arch across the sky, turn myself around, and look up at the stars. These lights I’ll never in my life be able to see up close. I close my eyes again in this dream, and have a spontaneous thought of dreaming within a dream is possible, it falls away from me towards the earth before I have time to think about it any further, and I begin to descend, and as I see the ground again, I see myself down there on the sidewalk, and I remember: I don’t have a jetpack, I’m not quite free, not yet, but I do hope someone invents it soon. And I continue walking on towards home, thinking that Freedom is a Jetpack.

Ahaha, the bigtime! (84 comments)
Posted by voodoochopstiks @ 16:33 CDT, 18 April 2007 - iMsg
I've made it in the bigtime! I'm getting rave reviews!

In case you haven't kept up to speed. I work as a Level Designer at Grin, currently working on Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2: Tactical(PC exclusive GRAW2 with the same story but completely different gameplay/content/models etc. A bit more hardcore.)

Recently we released a closed multiplayer beta for fileplanet subscribers, dedicated Ghost Recon fans and the press, which contained two gameplay modes(one of which I helped design), and one map(which I built and got rough outlines designed for me) and some previews have now been published about it. Since this is the first real thing I produce as a grown-up, having the international press say it's great is making me really proud of myself :D.

The Calavera level map design is exceptional. The large, broken down houses, containing tons of little cracks to sit or hide in, speaks volumes for the effort put in by map designers.
http://www.1up.com/do/previewPage?cId=3158803

Both game types take place in a dense, rundown urban location called Calavera. The name itself means "skull" in Spanish and resonates with ominous connections to the Dia de Los Muertos. The cramped location means that firefights take place at close ranges, so while sprinting might be a good way to get across large open areas, you'll want to creep around with your weapon drawn when rounding the corners of buildings or fences. You can see from the screens in our media section just how crowded the maps can be. Rather than giving players a sense of security when surrounded by walls, the options for players to get up on roofs means that death can come from any direction.

Yay! I'm the best! :D

1.3 maps? What's needed? (66 comments)
Posted by voodoochopstiks @ 06:15 CDT, 2 October 2006 - iMsg
Ok, I am finally starting to get around to maybe making a quake 4 duel map. Now, I've been seeing alot of people wanting new maps for 1.3, so, what do you think are important attributes for a 1.3 map, what should be different from the currently used ones? (Monsoon, Placebo Effect, Phrantic, maybe a few others?)

More rockets? Harder to reach railgun? Longer jumps? Bigger size?

So, what would YOU like to see in a quake 4 map made for 1.3?

I dream of savages in Italy. (13 comments)
Posted by voodoochopstiks @ 00:40 CDT, 25 September 2006 - iMsg
I once again took the effort to write down a dream of mine, I had this tonight, may it be entertaining to you:

The dream starts out as I walk up a wooded hill, most of the ground beneath me is cliff, I am smoking for some reason. Apparently I am in italy, even though it looks like the forests around my house in Stockholm. I continue my hike up the cliff, among the leaftrees, I come up quite close to a small hut made of sticks and some skin, only big enough to lie down in. "Oh I forgot about the wild men in this area" I think to myself, and I hear a noise down to my left, I look and I see a dirty man with long black hair and beard, he is naked except for the dirt on his body, I throw my lit cigarette at him, it gets stuck in his beard and he prances around a bit to not get burnt. I laugh and say "Hah, you're more human than I thought, a baby wouldn't dance around because of fire like that." He looks back at me with big blue sad eyes, and says in quite fine english with an italian accent "Fire is bad, but not as bad as being without charity". I laugh as I reach the top of the cliff with him following me, there is a nearly sheer 200 meter drop down, but there are several trees growing from the bottom along the cliff face, reaching to even higher heights than the cliff, and the possibly spectacular evening view from here is hidden by the crowns of the trees, but the show of golden light on the branches is very beautiful and makes me feel at peace.

I for some reason take a great leap out onto a branch hanging fairly close the cliff, I look down and see the leaf-covered ground below the cliff. I get a better grip on the side of this humongous 4-meters-in-diameter branch, and climb to the top of it. I walk along it to get closer to the trunk and other branches, and I grab ahold of a smaller branch, thin enough for me to reach around and hold, and I slide down this branch to empty air, and I take another leap to another large and suitable branch, large enough to be a treetrunk in itself. All this time, during my descent, I've been talking to the wild man, preaching to him about his humanity, now when I look up, I can no longer see him waiting at the cliff edge. I walk along a branch out towards the cliff, and gently move myself onto a cliff face, and I grab a series of angled extremities and make fast progress downwards, as I climb, I change back and forth between the cliff and the tree when it gets difficult. I get the impression I have climbed down this route before, despite all its hazards and it's remoteness. As I get nearer to the bottom of the cliff, I smell the leaves on the ground, which are covered by new leaves, as the old ones rot beneath. I also seem to notice an increase in the amount of human constructions such as rope-ladders and small wood platforms.

I get onto the bottom branch, and begin to figure out how to get down the last 20 meters between the bottom branch and the ground, and I step onto a vine-covered outer part of the branch, I hear a crack and some noise, and the whole outer half of the branch, connected by vines to branches higher up the tree, begins to swing forward toward the cliff face, at first I am very worried that the branch will crash into the cliff, but as I notice the speed of the pendulum movement slowing down, my heart rate slows again. I notice the strong vines unfurling slowly from their homes higher up in the tree. and I see the ground coming closer at a leisurely rate, when there is about 5 meters left to go down, the vines run out and the branch and I freefall towards the bottom floor, and we land with a thud as well as a 'glop!' sound. I disembark from my strange lift and jump down into the leaves at the bottom, I also hear a splashy sound, and I notice that the layers of leaves stretch up to my knees. I take in the scenery, and notice it has gotten so dark that it is almost night, and there seems to be quite a bit of fog down here. I walk on outwards from the cliff face, as I hear a bright chirping alarm noise. I look around and wonder where it might come from, and then I wake up, and it's the sound of my alarm clock.

First day of proper work (48 comments)
Posted by voodoochopstiks @ 23:20 CDT, 31 July 2006 - iMsg
I'm preparing to head off on my first day of proper work. The only work I've done before is shuffling files in an archive for 3 days(about 3 weeks ago). Graduated from high school in the beginning of June. I've gotten employed by GRIN as a Level Designer after sending them some samples of my work.

Pretty excited about getting to do my hobby for a living, even if it I won't be mapping for deathmatch. Pays pretty well too(about €2000 a month), so I can definately see myself doing this for a while. Will do it until I get bored(probably gonna take a few years at least) and then see what else I can do in gamedev, or I'll go back to school and study something interesting like anthropology or spanish :D(already got admitted to stockholms university for these but since I got such a nice job I'm gonna wait for a few years).

Also went to the KODE5 qualifiers in Stockholm, the only match I saw wasn't particularly exciting(tox vs blue), but afterwards everyone headed out to the Home of Chrome to party, was pretty wild and really fun. Fooki kept trying to put me under the table with all his booze-slinging :D. Ok, gonna shower now and play a few games before heading off at ~8. I'm a little bit nervous.

Wish me luck :D

vq3 vs CPM, OSP vs CPMA (705 comments)
Posted by voodoochopstiks @ 13:27 CDT, 20 July 2006 - iMsg
OSP VQ3: 41% (1330)

CPMA CPM: 34% (1107)

CPMA VQ3: 25% (801)

Ok, since the CPL has picked q3 for the remainder of the 2006 world tour I'd figure I'd do a poll to see who wants what.

READ THIS FIRST, VERY IMPORTANT, I WILL NOW EXPLAIN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT OPTIONS. DO NOT VOTE UNTIL YOU'VE READ THIS:

OSP VQ3: Your standard vanilla quake 3 gameplay with the match and competetive features of OSP. Has been used formerly for ESWC and CPL. Has not been updated in a few years and has no download or presentation site.

CPMA VQ3: Your standard vanilla quake 3 gameplay with the featureset of OSP + some new additions like improved netcode, FPS independent physics and active developer support, the last version was released a few days ago and there is no sign of featureset development stopping.

CPMA CPM: New CPM gameplay with the above features plus gameplay changes such as new movement physics allowing for air control, ramp jumps, changed weapon balance/features and different armor system. Gameplay is continually tweaked and changed if and when issues arise.

PLEASE DO NOT VOTE UNTIL YOU READ THE ABOVE!

I've fucking had it with the TSN commentary. It sucks SO much compared to ANY iTG caster. Seriously, the best of TSN is way below the worst of iTG. Please post in this thread and maybe we can tear up a bit of a shitstorm about it, and get them to change. Currently, the CPL sell their casting rights on a yearly basis, this year, they've sold it to gotfrag(TSN), let's make it known that the events will get more publicity and more attendance with some proper casting. It will pay off to not go for the immediate quick buck.

Please voice your opinion here in the CPL forums.

Purri on the hunt for tox. (9 comments)
Posted by voodoochopstiks @ 22:02 CDT, 10 June 2006 - iMsg
Purri 7-8 Tox(I think). There's only about a minute left, Purri is fully stacked and is chasing around looking for tox, and can't seem to find him. Finally, purri finds him, but tox is ready with a double rail and quickly finished him off afterward, snatching the lead away from Purri's almost closed grasp and finishing Purri 8-10 Tox.

More spectating, the guy with the fnatic shirt who is not purri is from the CS team. The guy with the wee dreads and sunglasses was a friend of someone, can't recall who, but he was fun either way.The girl is Elin, a friend of fazz and Purri, very nice and friendly to everyone.

voodoochopstiks pictures of the ESWC 2006 Swedish Qualifier. Sadly, lighting conditions inside Gamers Paradise(certaintly not a photographer's :D) were quite hard to work with, very dark or very green usually, or both at the same time. Leads to some blurry pictures, I hope you forgive me. This is my first gallery, and Sujoy apparently made me admin just for saying I was going to post pics later :D. Anyway, I had a very nice time there, and I hope you enjoy the pics.

Dreaming of Helsinki (42 comments)
Posted by voodoochopstiks @ 06:25 CDT, 11 May 2006 - iMsg
by Daniel Platt

I am walking through some corridor in a Helsinki hotel, I am carrying some irrationally huge box for my geforce 7900GT and a pair of letters, I have addresses on neither of them, but one of them has the name Thomas *Something*Laiven, it's weird because the whole corridor is slanted sideways, and when I enter the lobby I accidentally drop the letters, and they slide in a bit under the overhanging wall, I have to fish them out. When I get them out I see see two girls with ponytails, one brown, one blonde, about 16-17 sitting on a couch in the lobby, giggling,
and I get down on the couch opposite them, with the big box on my knees, with the lid pointing up, obscuring them from my view. "Oh, 7900GT, is that good?" asks the blonde ponytail to the brown, I push down the lid and say "Yeah, it's the best", and smile. The brown ponytail says something about agreeing. "Does it have one of those cool neon light blinkers" says the blonde one, and the brown ponytail says "No, nothing blinking there", I say "Well, it has a tiny little blinking light on it, but I don't like the big lights
making my computer into a disco" which makes them both giggle a little. The brown haired girl says "Yeah, I agree, I don't like it blinking either."

We both leave out the lobby entrance, I notice it's night, and we step out on some train platform about 50 meters above the ground, which is a cliff leading down to Helsinki city. The train arrives(the hotel is the end station) and we get on it. The girls get in the chair group opposite mine. The train starts with a jolt, and a big jerk that sends me flying almost out of my chair. The girls and a few others in the train laugh. "Is it always that rough when it starts?" I ask, and the brown haired girl answers "Yeah, the first-timers always do that" and smile. Anyway, there's some idle chatter between them and I look out the window with a good view over the city of helsinki[which I have no idea how it actually looks in real life], As we ride by it I see one of those oil towers which spew flame out the top, but here it's just a flame/orange-red colored exclamation mark hovering slightly above the oil tower, I blink a few times in disbelief.

Both I and the girls get off on the next stop, we enter some kind of shopping center from 50 meters above ground level, most of the shops are closed and its fairly dark, I get up next to the brown-haired girl and start to walk next to her through the shopping centre. "From knowing all that stuff about that 7900GT, I guess you like computer games?" I say, she responds "Well, it's my sisters computer. I find it alright but I'd like to put some limit on it, so we don't stay up to 5am playing on school nights.", I laugh a little in the dream, and then suddenly my alarm bell rings and the fun is over :(.

FOR I AM NOT TRULY ALIVE OR AWAKE UNTIL I AM THERE.

OH, HOW I LOVE THE TASTE OF IT.

PEOPLE, AIR, BREATH AND SOUND UPON MY FACE.

Weird again. (25 comments)

I had a weird dream again, this one took some effort to remember.
I was on a large wheat-field by a small railway station and then a big black steamroller with the text PTOING on it's "forehead" comes rolling by really fast, I run after it for a few hundred meters until it disappears, and then I run a few more hundred meters and I find the end of the line, they are still constructing the railway, and I ask the railway workers what PTOING meant and then they talk some foreign language with me, and then one guy points to some sign and says TOMATOES, and that's it. I think my father is also with me, but I'm not sure.

Wyrd dream (88 comments)
Posted by voodoochopstiks @ 02:19 CDT, 27 September 2005 - iMsg
shit
that was one crazy dream
I dreamed I was fighting lots of fleshy creatures
in an anormous uzuldaroum
these giant green slimy ancient temple city ruins made up of enormous stone slabs
with a strange sky above
I am jumping around fighting these things
when suddenly they all die for some reason and I spot some human very far off
I run there and it turns out it's my stepsister in a labcoat(she's a chemist irl), analyzing these weird hyroglyphs on the walls and standing over a sarcophagus of some sort which is

open
there's some big form of contract there, and glowing green text begins to glow on it
I can distinctly make out letters that look like Ktulu, then I look next to me and there is a 4 meter tall Cthulhu which is glaring at the contract and seemingly ignoring me
and then my stepsister goes on to tell me about earth and some cure for some disease being here, and she tells me not long ago she found these eggs, and after some kind of scientist

went crazy and locked them inside they got the time to experiment with some eggs they found
and if you used a fan on them they would hatch
and she takes out this scorpion-thing
at least it looks like it from the back
and I take it in my hand and turn it over and there is some really really really creepy face of a little ring-esque girl which screams at me
I get freaked out and scream too
scream high and scared, this is terror
my number one fears are things that SHOULD be nice but are evil
and then I don't remember what the hell happened next
I feel like a hero of a H.P. Lovecraft novel
dreaming of strange and weird worlds
Cthulhu is obviously infecting my mind with his dreaming

(pasted from my irc log, telling it to another guy)
