Insane. I remember first watching the mTw movie and being impressed. (you can't download it now without being a member to their site. gay) Anyways, this 4kings movie really is, dare I say art. I watched it thinking Guy Richie had directed it, honestly. I could see how this movie could take movies in general to a higher level and be a showcase to appeal to corparate sponsors.

yeah, sorry about that guys. By default it installs divx 5.0.5 pro, which of course contains gator. However, the movie itself uses xvid, not divx. It was going to have two track audio, and to make it easier for you guys a single install point seemed best. However the second audio track was pulled at the last minute, and the codec pack download remained. Sorry

Simply deselect divx from the list of installable codecs when you run the gordian knot codec pack if you don't want gator.

Only one fragmovie has ever been close to this one and that was the RTCW fragmovie from some US wolffinal (abuse vs cK? whatever) with commentary describing the whole match. THAT was alsoa friggin great fragmovie.

i don´t like rtcw at all , but this movie is REALLY nice!

the intro is amazing, then when the action ingame stuff kicks off it kinda goes down hill, i mean the cheesy rock dance stuff really kills the atmosphere built up by the excellent intro, which is a real shame. other than that its pretty good, some strange transitions once in a while that dont really fit but nothing too major.

i really liked the motion blur (is that a plug in, or just a few ghosting filters?), the glow filter was simple but pretty effective and u put the shine filter to good use.

motion blur comes from taking a high fps clip, and downsampling it to a lower fps output. I think i over-did it in some places, but we live and learn. :-)

Well it's technically very impressive and some of the footage is brilliant, displaying the epic nature of some of RTCW's battles perfectly and the player models, animations and weapon effects look pretty spiffing on full settings. But it often felt like the usage of effects was somewhat excessive. It was frequently difficult to tell what exactly was going on as any given frag could be accompanied by such a myriad of perspective changing, camera spinning, picture blurring, screen flashing and fast forwarding touches. As initially stated sometimes this works really well with the switching of perspective, slow-motion and/or spilt-screen giving a much clearer picture of what took place than if a simple first person perspective had been used but frequently the overuse of such techniques was confusing. It's tempting to say that as RTCW is a game of few truly jaw-dropping frags one has to jazz it up extensively to make it more exciting, whereas with more spectacular games like the Quake or UT series the movie-maker can let the action speak for itself much of the time.

I also felt it was a bit overlong, it may have been more appropriate to release it as 2 or 3 separate films since it seems to be split into several segments anyway (beach, village, funny moments). The beach section in particular is fucking outstanding and really deserves to be a single movie in their own right.

I haven't played much RTCW, but I assume that the skill required to make kills is equal to other games (basically any game played by humans vs humans will escalate to high skill levels).

But I agree that to an outsider, RTCW kills seem a lot less impressive than, say, Q3 or UT. Even in CS, you can kill many people very fast with a few well-aimed headshots, or get an improbable wallkill with a short burst, so it can create a 'jaw-dropping' scene...but in this movie, the biggest scenes (except for the nice panzers and grenades 0_o) had someone at midrange spraying a full clip and barely killing two enemies despite aiming at them the whole time, and then managing to finish off the last with a pistol. It felt like the Nazis had personal YA ;0

This is probably somewhat because I only played the game a tiny bit, and with unskilled players - as I got better at Quake and CS, I would appreciate some scenes in demos/movies which I never noticed before. When I see DoD, Tribes, SoF2, JK2, etc movies I often don't find them so impressive...but still, since the player models in RTCW look so realistic, it is unsatisfying when even the elite players take so long to get kills. I guess making players take so long to die increases the teamwork of the game, since it becomes tougher to use skill+luck to kill the whole enemy team single-handedly...

Incredible quality and editing though.

the whole definition of impressive needs to be addressed. On one hand you have visually stunning and impressive to look at, especially when you look at the cream of the crop of quake3 movies. They are just stunningly beautiful. On the other hand you have what is difficult to do as a gamer, what requires more skill to pull off.

The way i see cs, having seen many movies, and watched top clans play at competitions is that there is a lot of hanging around (camping), waiting for enemy players to walk into your sights. I know the entire game isn't like this, but there is a large proportion of gametime spent in this situation. Now, to me, as a gamer and a movie maker this doesn't seem very impressive to watch visually, or to play. RTCW on the other hand is a good example of the middle ground between quake3, and cs. It is a fast game (especially as the clock ticks on), it has strafe jumping, real life weapons / settings, beautiful combat, but unlike the other two it has innovative team/class/objective gameplay. Many games touched on classes / team based multiplayer before, however rtcw was the first game i played where teamplay really counts far above individual player skill. In cs, from what i've seen it's possible to take down a player with 1shot to the head, realistic, but not much fun. In rtcw if i remember correctly it takes a minimum of 3 headshots of a pistol or machinegun to take down player instantly, and that's when they have full health. Continually hitting that target can be compared to the accuracy needed in quake3 to take down a player with the lightening gun (quake 3 the players move more but a shot goes exactly where you aim it, in rtcw there's weapon spread, bodyspecific damage zones, and the camera shake experienced from being hit). Compare this to the possible, and frequent to the one shot kill in cs and the rail gun in quake3. This is why you never see guys in rtcw competitions running around getting 10's of kills per life, something which seems far more common place in games like quake3 / ut2k3, etc.
This nature of the RTCW game may seem really unfair, or boring at first, and this is why a lot of people disregard rtcw and to a greater extent enemy territory for competition based multiplayer, because it can be hard to kill skilled players. However the game is a team game, and working effectively as a team; as a single unit is the key to success. Crossfires are everything in rtcw. Obviously 3 guys aiming at 1 guy could take him down in a minimum of 1 shot each, and this is a tactic all teams try to use to get the advantage.

Hopefully that's clear.
Now, if you look at good rtcw movies which show skilled teams/players vs skilled teams/players it becomes much more impressive to see a single guy take down 2,3,4,5 guys in a pistol and machine gun ammo clip, if you think practically every bullet has to connect and cause maximum damage (headshots), especially if it's one guy attacking and taking down a few enemies.

Yeah, enemies don't explode if you shoot them too much or punch their corpses (quake3), or shower a crimson cloud of blood from a single shot (cs), the game tries to strike an even balance (sorry punkbuster) between fun, and reality. :)

and to think, i don't even play rtcw any more! :-)

in rtcw, as i think is the same for cs there is weapon spread. you fire whilst standing up, or moving left and right, or jumping and the weapon spread of the weapon increases (exponentially in the case of jumping / running). Because rtcw is a much faster paced, active game the weapon spread comes in to great play, especially at close quarters.


don't even get me started on how medic effect the dynamics of teamplay! :-)

actually, the movie was split up. There was an additional trick jump section, which was carved out in to its own movie a couple of weeks back :-)
You're correct in that the movie is split in to sections, however on their own i don't think neither section would be worthy of a separate movie. Having said that, it was always the plan to make a 15-20minute movie, with no compromising on the compression quality. The amount of downloads racked up from the servers (nearly 9000 from two two minor servers that have counters, and potentially that much again from the main UK servers.) shows, people are more willing to put their connections (broadband, isdn and even a couple of dedicated 56k'ers) to use and set about downloading. Of course, not every one of those has liked the movie in the first place, but that's another story. :)

Oh i wasn't saying that it should have been split up because of the large download size, it was purely from an artistic pov. I felt it would have just been much more coherent had it been separated into individual pieces, each showing a different side to the game. The beach section sums up RTCW so well with the dramatic assault up the sand, airstrikes and bullets raining down. It also illustrates succinctly the tactics and teamplay required in the game from both sides - axis and allies - and the desperation that sets in when trying to fulfil the objectives under the pressure of time. For me that opening section is RTCW and therefore would have worked better on it's own, instead of being lost among the following scenes (which were good but didn't maintain the same clarity of vision as beach).

nice comments mccoy, this was the largest project i've worked on to date, and it was hard to work on something for so long and keep all the work in perspective. Maybe next time. :)

Excellent movie though i love the 'warping' around. Worth the download, goes with the music oh so well (specially mushroom) ... Nice frags too, really shows you how RTCW is played and gives you a feel for the environment there i <3 it!!!

one of the 'shrooms' weaker tracks.. not as pumping as usual, but still really nice. It's been mucked around with by yours truely, mixed in with a couple of other tracks to hopefully keep it varied enough for non-shroom fans.

I downloaded it last night, and I must admit that I'm looking forward to seeing it later this weekend.

However, isn't the title (- Revolution) sort of lame? Considering the Matrix Revolutions coming in nov and all the hype surrounding it..

the title fits in to a few elements in the movie, one of which being one of the audio tracks, which i really really really liked + all the other titles we came up with sucked.. :))

at the end of the day it's just a word associated with the movie, and nothing to do with the matrix or any of its sequels, other than another one of the audio tracks from reloaded.

I know it is hard to come up with a really good and original title - it's as always a lot easier to criticize and complain.

Anyways, after having watched the movie the title isn't really that much of an issue any more. My overall grade to the movie is well above an eight (>>8) on a ten scale.

LOL, personnaly I havent slept since first RTCW demo came out 2+ years ago. Many saying this movie is awesome, so you wont feel bad if I say this. There are alot of rtcw movies outhere, defenitly not my favorite rtcw movie, nor was the first shoalin one.

IMHO Apicalypse_2 is greater than 4kRevolution and apic is only 100 megs and came out 2 years ago. So what revolution? revolving camera?...some comments where either biased or easily impressed with nothing.

Apicalypse_2=better frags, kickass teamwork, better music, overall faster and smoother, trickjumping, panzer frags, bloopers etc. And the beach scene was already done better in a movie called wolfmovie about 2 years ago also.

i'd disagree on quite a few of the points you made about apic2 tbh, especially about it being 100mb. ;) . Infact, it was that and the apic1 movie that inspired me to start trying to make fresh rtcw movies in the first place due to them being so goddam dull.

What do i mean by dull? Well, i mean the things it shows, and the way it shows them had been done in numerous other movies, it offered nothing new, nothing that made me want to watch it again. I don't remember there being any examples of great team work, and if there was it was presented in such a way that it made it very hard for me as a movie watcher to follow. So what about the other individual components you mention?
Well, music to me (as in my opinion) seemed for the main part like the same thrash metal 'crap' that has been used in nearly all german rtcw frag movies, generally utter rubbish which portrays no emotion, has no real rhythm and does nothing for the movie at all, plus the fact that the movie was not synched to the music. Tbh, it might as well not even be there, and i know of a few people that muted it. The intro music was quite nice, but was really an opportunity missed here with this as no feeling, tension or anything was built up visually to go with the music. Don't even get me started on the [lack of] flow of the music between tracks. ;-) At the end of the day, music is down to the viewer, either they like it, or not, but as a movie maker you can at least try to use the music as part of the movie, instead of letting it go to waste, which appeared to be the case with apic2, and many other movies.
Faster and smooter, hrmm, i'd have to go and re-watch apic2 to make comments on this, but i don't remember it being particularly fast, or smooth, especially in terms of picture quality. (re-watched - and tbh, the fact that it's interlaced, especially all the way through the intro just makes it look like shit, and there's no excuse for it, especially from the movie which you say is better in every way! Camera movements on scripted parts are jerky, and it looks like some of the players during the scripted parts were suffering from bad lag too. The main bulk of the movie appears to be running at half frame rate (30/2), which would make it not smooth at all, but would really help with compression, not that the image quality was even that good in the end.)
bloopers, hrmm, again, i've seen better bloopers, and i've also seen bloopers presented better.
panzer frags, personally i am extremely bored of panzer frags, and that was the case when making the movie. Lots of movies have multiple kill panzer shots *yawn*, it takes very little skill to spawn rape. fact. Also, as i was using EDV beta, and knew that frog's panzah movie2 (which also used EDV beta) was coming out i purposefully stayed clear of excessive panzers.
The trickjump section was the only nice bit in apic2, but again, the presentation was not new, or original, making it for me almost instantly forgettable, other than the fact that it is the only really redeeming part of the movie.

So lets talk about filesize of 4k.revo. Tbh, a majority of people that were either a) interested in the movie from the release day of the trailer or b) had heard good things about the movie were on broadband. I know this isn't the case for everyone, but for a lot of people this was the case. I don't see the point in making a 100mb movie with crappy filesize, or crappy compression, or which generally looks like crap when i can add another 100mb on to make it look nice. or increase the resolution and make it larger. For me it was not a problem, and i had to upload it! TBH, with current codecs you're more than welcome to try and make a frag movie with a better quality picture, that looks as nice at a smaller size.. believe, i know it's practically impossible.

Granted, the japanese / korean wolf beach movie has a much nicer beach invasion.. if you'd read my interview you'd know i paid respect to this movie a while back and has been a great inspiration to me, it showed me that not all movies had to be crappy, boring, 'been there, done that' style frag movies. However there were a couple of reasons why i didn't try to copy it. a) it'd been done already (shaolin productions movies are about originality). b) it was 7-8mins long, which is too much for an intro c) it was created on a lan. Getting that many people on a readily accessible internet server is very hard without experiencing a lot of lag.. believe me (and all the people mentioned in the credits).. we tried!!! :D I personally still believe the intro in 4k.revo is far better than that in apic2, and actually serves a purpose in the movie as a whole, where as apic2's does not.

So what was revolutionary about this movie? TBH, i never said it was revolutionary. The movie isn't not called revolutionary. It is a term used to refer to the intro, and zommy's demise at the end of the movie coupled with the fact that he has left the rtcw squad for 4kings. I thought that much was kind of obvious.... i guess not.
However, having said that there are a good few things in this movie which I have not seen done before, have not been seen before, or have not been presented in the same way. My remit from 4kings was to make a movie which would not only promote the 4k team, and their sponsors, but also the game of rtcw to the internet gaming community. I admit there has been some negative comments about it, but it comes mainly from the rtcw community itself, of which some members seem to prefer movies made with little or no thought used during the creative process, or like to make hardcore movies which show nothing that you can't get from a demo. However there has been some great feedback from players of different games to which i have helped promote rtcw, 4k, and their sponsors, so as far as i'm concerned i have done a better than average job... but you're right in as much as it's definately not perfect. :)

at the end of the day 4k.revo and apic2 are 2 very different movies. You said you had seen other movies by me, so you should've known what to expect with this. I can't help if you don't like it, but i can at least try and get my points and rationale across. thanks for being honest though, i'm sure many other people feel the same way, but simply don't comment, i'd prefer to know, than be ignorant.

oh, and as for biased comments about this movie. I think you'll find that other than simonb's news posting (him being a member of 4k) no one here has any reason to be biased towards this movie other than myself. The comments come purely from people that have downloaded it, and wanted to express their honest opinion of it. As you will also see, a majority of them aren't afraid of showing who they are by logging in, and posting with their usernames. ;-)
I sure know some people here are biased against it though.
