It has been almost a decade since Showdown 2 released. A lot has gone on between then and now. Leaving the game shortly after 2012 and life taking me random ass directions. Jesus christ I'm in my 30s now.
A few months ago I had a little urge to hop on with a friend of mine to run some duels like the old days. I then opened up Vegas, dusted off my old unused demos, and I began to feel creative again. Editing and recording brought back a lot of new ideas and joy. I missed this game. Browsing ESR and the discord servers, I see a good bit of you are still active and going strong. Feels like it didn't change a bit. Missed you guys.

Sappy shit aside, missed this community and I've been dying to jump back into a large project after I finish the fragmovie I'm currently working on just to get the dust off. While I'm working on that, I want to open up a demo call for Showdown 3! I want to make this one special.

I want the best demos you guys can throw at me.
Rocket juggles, LG suspends, flick rails, quad runs, CTF flag caps. You know the drill.

- IMPORTANT BITS!

Be sure to name your demos accordingly to make it easier to sort and label you correctly in the movie! Having your demos cut will also make things a lot easier to record in a timely manor and edit. 10 seconds before and after the clip allows me to just record the entire demo without searching. If you can't cut demos, be sure to timestamp the frag.

To cut demos you can use Wolfcam or UTD

Send your demos to my email with the right formatting on your email subject.
Should look like this for the subject.

There's no limit to how many demos you can send, but remember I am looking for your best. Try to sort them before sending. I'm super excited to begin working on this.

No deadline. It's going to be a bit slower gathering people's demos than it was back then so it might take a bit longer.

I got the feeling the community needs something else. Is it working though? Are people sending demos? Or only the usual subjects? Personally i am pretty bored of old school frag movies.

In the later QL movies of pros movie makers started to add more meta game scenes, such as how the frag came to be so that the single frag got more important which worked well and brought the good old frag movie to a new level. But this will not be possible here as you are already planning to look only for 10 seconds.

I don�t know. I don�t want to demotivate you or something. I just want to bring in some thoughts. Maybe it can spark something.

I'm not sure if you still play QL but there's still a lot of creativity and new frags/situations never seen before happening all the time. Plus, I think frags are secondary (they will be impressive regardless), it's all about the edit+music and the vibes you get from the whole thing.

10 seconds? I said 10 seconds before and after the frag or the run, or whatever. Which allows for me to have more time before and after the clip to edit. It's just room during the editing process. I never asked for 10 second clips.

I'm also not into doing many pro movies. I like to stay close to the community. Give them a movie to show off what they got. I love watching pro and tourney movies, but it's not me in terms of my creative style. I Enjoy tinkering with new and interesting music and angles to give a nice flow. My movies have always been about lighthearted fun.

As melechesh said, I don't try to put frags completely in the forefront. For me it's everything moving together as one theme. Helps me push myself creatively :)

Ok, where are those people that send demos? Can they be found here on ESR? Can i enjoy the movie together with them? And what is after the movie? Where is this community? When i was still active i realized that nearly nobody on ESR is really active anymore. Where do you experience the Quake community?

Came back looking to have some fun again, but I guess it's just people that stick around being angry.

I have quite a bit of demos so far. I just wanted to come back for a fun community highlight movie for anyone that was still around and wanted to do another video. Was missing this game and really enjoyed making movies. There's a good bit of people that still play from what I've seen. I don't know who's completely active but it seemed good enough to have a go at a movie.

Not sure why you seem upset. It's not hurting anyone.

Don't worry, this project is more than justified. For me a community fragmovie is also a document. I watch it after 5 years and remember the names, think back of the time, how the game felt like.
Making a community fragmovie is like taking inventory in a nice way that people can enjoy and that overlasts the years. With this project we have a chance to get that for 2020. I'm looking forward to it!

ESR may be a dead shithole but the pickup discord is going strong. I even still hang out on IRC. There is a community that wants this!

Also couldn't we as a community just switch back to Q3? Not CPMA though. The switch was only because untalented people like Syncerror and Tim Willts thought it was a good idea to dumb down Q3 into QL. But now that they have abondended it, why not go back? I know it is a big task, but is there anybody who could do it?

Personally, I would not want to switch back to Q3. I prefer VQL physics and the changes in weapon balance. QL works - it's not going to be huge again but I don't see more chances for Q3. What they both lack is infrastructure and Meta Features.

Hm ok. I experienced that QL is so aim heavy. If there is a situation i cannot deal with i have to aim better. In Q3 i am able to deny a weapon as a tactic. For example on Aero i could try and deny rail or letting the controlling opponent run out of ammunition. In QL the only thing i can do is to aim better. I think Carmack did a good job in balancing aim and control. In QL they had to reintroduce 15 sec respawn time for the rail on t4.

And its not if it was not possible to adjust weapon balance in Q3. But i think, like in Starcraft, the fun lies in having really strong tactics as to have tactics that are flat and not recognizable clearly. But hey you are a map maker. You might understand more than i do. Which ones were from you?

Aero is a good example of a map that's worse in QL, due to the spawn system for players and weapons and the better netcode. What makes QL worse on aero is what makes it more fun on other maps IMO. I think Q3 is also a lot more aim heavy these days as people just hit more due to better connections/servers/hardware.
I don't know better than anyone else, it's just my preference. It's just natural maps play differently in QL compared to Q3. Aerowalk is a map I never enjoyed playing or watching that's why I it's not in my focus when making this decision.

I am not upset. Contrary, i thing it is super cool that you are coming back with Quake spirit in your blood. Just wondering if there could be other maybe more modern ideas to help the community. Like i said, personally i find frag movies super boring because i saw a shitload of them. Nothing new to discover. Sorry, i did not want to demotivate you, maybe i could spark some thinking of yours leading to new creative ideas.

It's all good. Possibly in the future I'll mess around with new ideas. I did get inspired by the Memorial QL movie with the play by play sequence in the intro. Since I've been out of editing for so long, I'll be sticking to what I'm familiar with for a bit.

I think I sent you a decent vertical flick rail about 10 years ago that you didn't use for showdown. it was on a guy called 3del, although it was on dm6, it was a tdm match.

obviously don't feel obliged to use it lol, but you probably also have LOADS of content from years ago for demo calls so keep that in mind if you're stuck.

looking forward to this! your standard of editing looks really good man and I enjoyed Coloris 3!

i would send it again but i lost access to that email ages ago (edit: and i had to reformat my harddrive a few times as well lol) AND i haven't played quake live for years. gutted for you that you lost everything tho D:
