Yes, in a sense. Tumor cells are simply "extremist" versions of normal cells. The average cell could become cancerous at any time given the right exposure. The least spoken about danger of untreated Cancer is that metastization encourages further mutation (genetic destabilization) of nearby healthy cells.

syria was a badly governed state for decades, which implemented a 50 year state of emergency so that they could imprison, torture and even kill on a whim. both assad presidencies routinely indulged themselves in corruption, allowing a close clique of friends to engage in criminal enterprise and looting of the country's tiny wealth. they distracted from every scandal with the nearby israel-palestine conflict until it finally stopped working, and even at the first sign of rebellion, insisted that it was a "mossad plot" to divide syrians. they ignored a 3 year drought, which was poorly timed since this also coincided with an increase in food prices, meaning syrians everywhere had to bid more for bread.


none of this is the fault of europe, or america, or even russia. the reality is that syrian elite have no desire to create a state equal in prosperity, self governance and morality to western europeans. they only care about "knife in the back" politics and enriching themselves, you can already see something similar in moldova for instance.

the best case scenario is that the war ends. the only certainty is that isis will be defeated, but the problems that caused the civil war in the first place are still there. namely assad, his family, and his close clique of friends essentially rule over and steal from the whole country. the sunni arab population also don't recognize his rule as legitimate, and want a more conservative, more islamic government, in the hopes that reviving the faith will also lead to lower corruption and better governance.

but even if both isis and assad were gone, everyone was purged, and a new government was formed, there is still no positive outlook for syria. whatever tyranny was overthrown, they will instantly erect another. even now, the only two movements that people can get behind syria, is islamic utopia, or rally behind a cynical looting autocrat in the hopes that he'll protect your minority religious sect or ethnic group. the status quo essentially.

turkey looks bad right now but it's a picnic compared to what will come in the future. turkey's kurdish population is growing massively, and it would be even bigger now were it not for emigration to the west, and in the past, countries neighboring turkey. when the kurdish population reaches 35-40%, ethnic conflicts will be common place. it also remains to be seen whether the arab population in turkey will be allowed to stay, if that's the case then expect a few more terrorist attacks in the short term.

iraq will still be an incapable, corrupt, and poor nation. i said before that arab society has no public morality, and a maliciously stupid political class. but iraq is probably the worst offender with syria as a close second. the army right now is incredibly cowardly and incompetent in it's battles against isis. with nearly a 10 to 1 advantage in men and air support from western nations, they still cannot conquer mosul city without taking equal numbers of casualties to that of isis. and whilst taking their sweet ass time doing so. the soviet union managed to take south sakhalin in 2 weeks, against a much greater force than islamic revolutionaries.

iran is a real tragedy, i don't see that state ever becoming strong soon, whether it be in military or economy. they seem to be only be interested in funding and arming random rebel groups, aggrandizing themselves at the expense of their neighbors, projecting the last 45 years of abject failure on america, and indulging in corruption. all you have to do is visit anywhere in iran, breathe in the air for a day, and you will know that this is not a serious country. i hope that aegis missile defense gets even better in the next few decades, just in case they actually do cheat and develop nuclear weapons.

there are many such nations in europe where different religious or ethnic groups form a majority in a region. bavaria and austria are both majority catholic, yet are divided by borders. germans are the majority of inhabitants in south tyrol, yet they remain a part of italy and not austria. circassians in russia form the majority in the regions of Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachay-Cherkessia, but they are still within russian borders.

estonia today has to deal with a 25% russian population, with ida-viru county having a 73% russian population. the southern parts of zakarpattia oblast in ukraine, are majority hungarian and also borders hungary. switzerland is a mess of german, french, and italian counties, some are protestant, others are swiss reformed or catholic etc.

yet in all these instances, none of these people are currently engulfed in violent ethnic or religious conflicts, not even the estonians in idi-viru county. to attribute the sectarian violence in iraq or syria to anything other than an obvious lack of self control and political unity as a people, is wrong. i can forgive the kurds since the arabs have always been very violent towards them in their history, but the idea that we have to indulge the shia-sunni arabs in excuses for why they can't get along is sad.

maybe the reason why nations got involved in syria is because there was a big push by the same people who so bitterly decried the iraq war to "stop being irresponsible and help syrians overthrow assad". such people aren't accountable and there will always be people that call you irresponsible if you don't intervene, and a murderer if you do intervene.

but at the end of the day the intervention was/is relatively minor. the root cause of the civil war, and the reason why it still continues hasn't changed. syria is still run by a decrepit regime who loot, torture, and murder their political enemies.

His (or her) point is that values were very different in that time, and the native tribes were far from the innocent peoples you describe. People are often taught about the "brutal conquest" by the settlers, but rarely are they reminded about the centuries of tribal warfare in which the heads and scalps of tribal enemies were hoarded and kept as prizes from each victory. Indeed, before widespread abuse of later generations of settlers, the initial landing at Roanoke was most likely raided and savagely murdered or carried off as slaves before any previous contact was made in the area. The Native Americans certainly were not animals; they were (and still are) just as human as any of us. However, the largest tragedy from this whole time period is easily the vast numbers of their own people who, through greed and unrestrained ego, often defected to join the settlers cause. Sometimes they would uphold terrible land agreements for a cut of the bounty, and other times they would marry into european family abandoning children from previous marriages in the process. Too many times the greatest threat to peace and the way of life for Native Americans was hubris and shortsighted folly.

Nowhere in my statement did I equate laws and ethics. Given your concern about the significant number of nuclear weapons the US has, you might want to investigate the staggering number of near-miss accidents involving our (I do say "our" loosely) current nuclear fleet and the continuing issues with it, due to the sheer age of the B2 and missile C&C systems. Additionally, the article you linked posited that the current modernisation plan would violate the NPT, but no-where have I seen amongst relevant legislation that this might be the case. (funnily enough, the author cites no provisions, either) I think is highly unlikely that it's the amount of warheads the US is really concerned with having. Instead it is the responsiveness, reliability, and security of the delivery systems in prior mention.
