It all reminds me of back 10+ years when Nvidia brought out the HDR lighting that would cut your FPS in half if you use it. I still turn that shit off in every game to this day.

It looks nice but do we really want to go back to quake2 level polygon count and start working forwards from there again just so we can have some frames per second.

The latest (state of the art) computer graphics always required the latest technology at any given time.
This is just one extension, and only the beginning, the first step. With enough time, dedication and experience, engineers will be able to optimize things a lot.

RTX cards are still only in first gen, and your next graphics card will run this easy-peasy (perhaps current gen will also run it much better if they can optimize drivers and the code)

I'm personally very happy to see these kind of things, and I hope that more old games will receive similar modifications. I know it's just graphics and it doesn't make the game, but some eye candy are always welcome.
Q1/Q3/CPMA or Reflex especially (since it lacks textures) with area lights, soft shadows, global illumination, reflection, etc... would be awesome imo.

ps.: I would also love to have some true 3D positional audio for old games

Ray tracing isn't constrained by the number of polygons, but by the number of light sources. The guy who wrote the renderer actually explains it really thoroughly in his post.

I still play some QW from time to time, not much Q2 tho, never have (I skipped it entirely and jumped to Q3).

But it's still Quake after all, you can't go wrong with that... oh wait, never mind:(

Q2 was good though most Q1 players went straight to Q3. Q1/2 were released wonly one year apart and Q2 didn't bring any new gameplay elements to the equation, just updated graphics, so who can blame them. If you haven't played it I think you should, there are new patches for widescreen support (bigger hud elements) and I also believe there are a couple of high res texture paks to go with the higher resolution. Obviously you could just use custom resolution which I think works out of the box though I'm not sure, but then you'd end up with really small hud elements. Try it!

I meant that I never played it when the scene was active. Later (early QL times, when QL was so bad I couldn't stand it for more than 15-20 minutes) I played lithium and other mods, but only on private servers with friends.
I still have a couple installations, raytraced, high texture pack, yamagi...etc.. and I still do sp runs from time to time, but multiplayer wise, it never really was my cup of tea tbh.

i think Q1 benefits from more subtle improvements like what has been done with arcane dimensions, preserving the dark gritty atmospheric grim pixelated goodness

Yeah, the look of the lightmaps in Q1 is a big part of its atmosphere.

I use to play some pimped/maxed out darkplaces occasionally. With high res texture packs and everything... still looks decent (but the movement is little weird somehow).

Quake 3 when? It would look amazing. It has aged way better than Q2.

This would be cool especially for movie makers.

It would also change gameplay a lot. For example, ambushing at corners would be more difficult because your shadow and your radiosity could reveal your location:)

Its a good way to justify reselling old games and make them look "good" with minimal work for the artists.

I like the idea of them using this tech to update old games.
That's about the only modern use ray tracing has.

These are all commercially dead games that would resell millions of copies if someone just injected this ray tracing stuff into the engine.

That was never a requirement. We had real-time raytracing demos using cuda/opencl many years ago, nvida is just first to provide consumer level GPUs which are able to accelerate raytracing on the hardware level.
