That was the most popular song in 1999. It's been 20 years without listening to that, just like the last time people heard of "UT" or "Quake".

We are in a forum full of people who know what quake or ut is. What now?

Yeah gotta give credit where it's due, and the Unreal crew kept delivering.

Not only ground breaking engines trough the years, but they actually revolutioned the gameplay scene with Fortnite. Like it or not (i don't like fortnite, but i tolerate it). It's a literal societal phenomenon.

Beside, Id pretty much died when BethAssda fagocited them, now they just use the name for mark recognization.

Who would have tought it would have ended this way? Epic not only winning, but id dying at all.

Doom (2016) was a great success, both critically, from the players or in number of sales.

If there is one game that fans of fast-paced single player FPS are waiting for, that would be Doom Eternal.

To be honest I'm quite glad that both id and epic are still doing well after all these years. At one point I even thought that classic FPS was going to completely die, like some other genres that have faded away with time.

It's not about UT vs Quake. It's about UE vs idTech. And id has most certainly lost that war. Ages ago.

they stopped licensing their engine when they were purchased by zenimax.
They only have game sales to rely on now.

They lost Carmack (and many others), stopped focusing on their engine, and the competition roflstomped them.

Nearly every game at that time was using id tech 3. But id tech 4? There are hardly any games.

Thus it was id tech 4 which was hold back too long and therefor lost ground to unreal engine 2 and when it came out it was too fancy too non-standard. Thus Doom 3 and an uncontrolled Caramack was the beginning of the end. They overfocused on their engine which was for sure was Caramacks fault.

Conclusion: Carmack destroyed id.

They lost touch with reality somewhere in the early '2000s.

Quake 3 was actually the beginning of the downfall, they couldn't/wouldn't even deliver a single player campaign, and the game itself was unbalanced and buggy before the community patched it and made it the esport titan it became.

But the real issues started with Doom 3, and contiunued and actually worsened with every subsequent release. Quake 4 should have been a masterpiece, but they realeased a complete catastrophe of a game, especially technically. By 2006, Id engines became completely irrelevant technologically.

They kind of lost the plot. They can't make single player games, they can't make multiplayer games either, and they can't even deliver top game engines, and this since well before Carmack left.

Carmack has a big part in all of this, he's very overrated, he was good when engines were small and simple, but couldn't keep up with complex ones.

And then left the sinking ship when it was clear there was no future in it. Like a rat. The ship he contributed to sink.

But they won't spend one, measly million to give UT4 a much needed update. ;(

Well they would have been overwhelmed with work at the success of fortnite.

Maybe they still care a little of UT and dont just want to take money and pay somebody else to make it

I mean imagine what would happen to quake if they just push it to the side and let other people make it... oh wait.

With 15 billion, you'd think they could hire a guy or two extra, which would free up Steve Polge and one or two others to finish UT4 (not much work needed tbh)

nobody cares about the game. UE engine runs 90% of the gaming market and has done for 15 or so years

its used in hollywood movie CGI, militiary grade simulators, VR, cartoon animation, movies, everything

have a tour of your crib before its built in VR, posh office jobs and engineering

Unreal was the best after all . Quackery at its finest.

It's unreal how good the first Unreal was. Those graphics, that soundtrack, those enemies doing rolls to avoid attacks... Insects and birds flying around!

And the campaing was so long, too! It must have taken me more than 20 hours to finish it the first time. Imagine something like that, today!

I remember enjoying unreal at friends lan doing that campaign. I also remember enjoying unreal multiplayer more so than ut99.

I was a teen back then and I was already enjoying Doom and Duke 3D more than I enjoyed Unreal. Quake was too brown for me, Q2 was cool, I finished it, and Q3 blew my mind, it was so addictive.

I also remember playing duke3d and doom on friends lan quite a bit. Loved the fuck out of it. Shadow warrior too lol.

And what about Xbox, now you can normally play with the keyboard and mouse. Only it will be interesting, they will support the usual such as : <REMOVED> or will they only release their branded ones?
