Not sure, but try queueing up alongside a better (or worse) player and see how it works out. I've found that I can get games faster if I queue with someone less skilled, also more variety of players.

Lets make simplified assumptions. Half are queuing/menu (because MM takes forever, loading times are long and frequent, and people looking at their shiny new skins). Assume half are in NA and half are in EU (with the f2p thing who knows the distribution really. And the other regions have basically no one). Assume 1/5 are each in FFA/Instagib/TDM/1v1+2v2+Sacrifice/TDMbots (probably TDM and Insta are more popular than FFA, and likely TDM with bots has many players that refuse to play any other gametype, but it's simpler this way). Assume five tiers by elo and all distributed equally.

All that wall of text means you should be seeing the same 60 guys over and over again. And if we consider more realistic assumptions, like that pretty much no one picks all server locations in the region and that some gametypes are less popular than others, then it could actually be 15 players total with your settings.

The problem of MM by elo and with many gametypes is that it divides the playerbase way too much, which in games that aren't the very most popular it results in small niches. Imagine if MM only considered your region and QC didn't have a million gametypes: you would be playing with 3,000 different guys. That way QC would be way more fun than today, and if you think about it in part what made classic Quakes be so great was that there was no elo matching.

And when the two new modes are released, which will be by the time at least half of the 6,000 will have dropped the game, then with those said assumptions you'll be playing with 21 guys total. With the realistic assumptions it could be 5 or 10. Yeah, dead game feeling, and unplayable at non-peak hours. The only way QC won't die when those two gametypes are released is that it either drops MM or MM gets much simpler.

That's the argument I made about the release of CTF not being good for the game as it divides the player base further and that they should just have TDM and that's it.

I really don't see how the release of CTF is gonna be any good for the game, especially if it means we get new maps and fixes for TDM half as often because the other half of the devs' time will be spent on CTF instead (probably even more than half as the gametype is new for QC and will need more work and more maps at first).

If we look a previous quakes, there was always a split of the player base between TDM / CTF / CA etc.

Keeping away is meant in the sense that they play CA by default because that's the majority of the servers and will then rarely venture to some more underground gametypes for which you gotta go to some IRC channel and wait only to play with a few people who have cained that gametype for 20 years.

And they have 2nd .de server and a .nl server where games are happening aswell. And there are 2-3 servers iirc with rocket only ctf that are populated aswell.

For tdm, i agree, pickup is almost the only choice but if you dont ping badly to poland then here https://qlstats.net/server/2383 you can find tdm games, not every evening like with ctf but on the weekends u can spend whole evening there playing 2v2/4v4 on mostly old q3 maps since poles prefer those :)

ofc ca and ffa are more populated, they have always been but you know that there's a 'search' option in ql server browser. You dont have to scroll all servers and pick the most populated. Dude, there's no TDM servers (apart from 1 in PL) and you're lucky if you find a CTF server. How is that claiming something without proof? I've browsed QL servers enough to know that those are almost non-existent, to my greater regret (I would have preferred the opposite).

Most new players click the play button or join a server without even understanding that there are different gametypes, let alone trying to set a filter in the search option in the hope of finding the only CTF server with players on. They usually stick to what they see as active in terms of servers and players which is usually CA. How many people play QL TDM or CTF vs. how many play QL CA. There you have the answer to the point I'm trying to make originally, that CA separated most players away from other gametypes like TDM and CTF.

The QC > QL playerbase argument is just to piss off some people more than anything by the way, don't take it so serious.

pub CTF/TDM is just stupid. Nobody defends, teamplay is lacking as hell, quitters midgame and and and. CA on the other hand is fun even with random crap teams but ofc its even better with organized teams.

QL killed the IRC pickup games for me due to no pickup servers (I guess there were some later but too late). Pickup games were soooo fucking awesome in almost all teammodes. Except team picks were uneven as hell.

As you said CA is just more fun for casual games, also more accessible to new players, and there's not too much thinking involved. That's the main thing.

Apart from some hardcore fans who pretend to find timing items fun, the majority of casual players don't find that fun, hence why they turn to things like CA, FFA, instagib and whatnot.

This one server, omega, that is still active and has the last ql ctf mohicans on it is a bit different in that respect. Most players are experienced and so there usually is a decent distribution of positions.

Seems like a good motivation to add CA to QC. That way it may keep 500 players in 2 years..

The worst thing is that you're probably right. The majority of new players on QC would probably much rather a gametype where they they start with all weapons and don't need to time items, and they're probably more likely to stay on a game like that.

TBH if CTF ends up being enjoyable I might actually play QC. At this point I haven't played in months and have no intention of playing any time soon. I'm pretty sure there are quite a few other quake vets who feel exactly the same as me.

True, I have absolutely zero expectations for CTF being somewhat decent. Personally I have no idea how to make ctf playable with all these retarded abilities, but I don't design games. But if they miraculously pull it off and it has a decent sized community in NA then I'll start playing some games now and then, might even buy a new computer to get good fps.

The reason there are niches is also due to people loving a certain game type, so those players are there 'because' of that game type, and some wouldn't necessarily be there if the game type was not something they could select

so maybe you force TDM and you end up with only the people who love TDM playing, it probably wouldn't be that extreme, but you certainly wouldn't retain all the niche players if you take away the niche

It's going to be worse actually. The reddit noobs are saying it's not going to be two gametypes but four new, released during the same quarter. Plus there's the return of Sacrifice pending. Therefore right now we are experiencing the fastest and best MM this game will ever have.

To clarify, QC most likely is the most popular Quake game ever. However it's going to have a dead game feeling because of MM (can't see how many people are playing but only a long waiting time), and due to splitting the playerbase across elo brackets (can't do that without millions of players) and among 11 gametypes (ffa, insta, tdm 4v4, tdm 4v4 against bots, sacrifice, 1v1, tdm 2v2, 4 new gametypes).

I don't know about FFA but I get different players all the time in TDM. Of course I can always bump into the same players now and then sometimes in the same evening especially if they're queuing alone, but it's usually always a new bunch of players every game no matter how many games I have.

i installed qc a couple weeks ago and was excited to play. first duel back into the game and my keyboard and mouse inputs were totally ignored when the game started. i had to forcefully close the game through steam overlay. during the second game i started getting phantom weapon switches. third and fourth game were okay. fifth game and my inputs stopped being detected again. within the next 5-6 games i had 3 games with constant phantom inputs, including weapon switching, jumping, and +forward/back/left/right.

uninstalled again. maybe i'll try again in 6 months.

notice that the documented bug was related to "high fps". at the time, the january patch resolved the "phantom hops" bug for me, but due to the lack of players and the availability of other games, i uninstalled quake champions until around 2 months ago. when i reinstalled, the game ran very well, with no dropped input or phantom inputs, and there were more players. however, it came to light that quake champions was running secretive intentionally hidden instances of redshell, and so i uninstalled the game "out of principle". an acquaintance petitioned me to reinstall, and since redshell had been supposedly removed from the game, i did. now here we are, where you are so rudely and ignorantly accusing me of incompetence.

phantom input aside, which to be fair was not your main point, I highly doubt having no input at all in QC is a serious, persistent issue that cannot be fixed by some research. or you know, going the official way and contact customer support.

Hundreds of ppl had this phantom inputs bug, including me. Only happened in QC, never in other games. To me sounds a lot like this game is fucked.

I reinstalled and so far I really like it. It is 5 times better than it was 1 year ago. In short:

1) balanced champs (almost all are played). No lame OP anarki, nyx, doom, sorlag.
2) balanced weapons. No rocket arena as before, or parkinson lg. Still rl is the best weapon, but u can use the other weapons too. tribolt might need a small nurf.
3) 7 nice duel maps, instead of 3 and then 4 that we had for a very long time.
4) ranking system where you can see your real progress
5) instagib for fun and players coming from other games to play (CS players will feel right on home)
6) bots to prac, warm up and have fun. they dodge more human like than the ones in ql. you can play vs them with friends. you can even play 2 vs 4 or even 1 vs 4.
7) 2vs2 which is great, since requires just one more friend to play and it is like a middle ground between duel and tdm. It is like duel where you can still blame someone else for your loses. It has the best of both worlds. the manliness of duel and whatever tdm has
8) netcode is also better. performance though remains an issue

Is there ELO in instagib matchmaking aswell? Cause after playin it for a few days i end up with same story playing with 4 same ppl or waiting for a game to find a match for like 10mins
