OlegTar and maybe some other Russians (heard the nick eugene) have been talking about settings up QLstats with new hosting but it would cost so it would be great if the persons who can get it done gets financed. It's not that much time but I think hosting cost could easily be covered with donations.

I don't think it matters where is the server located if it stores any kind of data about European citizens. The data provider will be responsible to block the data gathering of a russian or any other kind of entity which are not GDPR compliant.

If the country who host server is outside of those unlucky EU then they arent under obligation to follow GDPR agreement, so they shouldnt give a shit about blockin it. Also there are virtual servers host services etc and plenty of other ways to bypass it

That's not how it works. If Steam/QL wants to do business in the EU, it should have the permission and acknowledgement from the EU citizen about the data collection on the server she/he is connecting to, even if the server itself is outside the EU.

It's even gets weirder, because EU citizens could in fact ask Steam/QL owners to forward their data (the data they collected about them) to QLranks or to any other entity as they see fit.

I don't think gaming statistics would be a target, and is really just a steamID personal information.

the site is not affected by the EU regs. this is just an excuse by the maintainer to shut it down. Sad!

I hope someone will get a solution, heard that at least one person started to download the old statistics, would also be possible for someone to set up an a new QLstats server, to be safe QL server could just not have a web site even if it's boring.

Maybe not, but that has to be decided by the courts, and I don't think any of us are about to make Quake the center of a years long, multimillion dollar privacy battle.

Seems like there's a fair amount of confusion going on here so I would like to clarify 2 key points:

- Hosting a website outside EU doesn't suddenly make it GDPR compliant. As long as a website's audience/users, intentional or not, includes residents of EU, it needs to be GDPR compliant, regardless of which part of the solar system the server is physically hosted.

- The real question is whether a SteamID is considered PII (Personally Identifiable Information) or not. And from what I can see, it isn't: https://store.steampowered.com/privacy_agreement/

However, if a user chooses to display their PII on their Steam Profile and someone can see that info by knowing their steam ID, then who is to blame? Probably the user, less likely Valve... but surely not a 3rd party site which only shows the steam ID itself (and game aliases which aren't PII either).

Imagine Plusforward.net kept a list of ESR usernames, and a number next to each name. Say, their total comments on ESR threads.

Sure, someone can then go to ESR, search for the username, and see all their juicy PII which they may or may not have chosen to display on their ESR profile, but I doubt Plusforward would be held responsible or expected to delete this username list due to GDPR. It's just a list of random names which by themselves are not PII.

To summarize, I don't think qlstats is breaking any GDPR compliancy laws in any way, but predath0r might just be tired of hosting the site, and if he still wants to take it down that's completely understandable, but if anyone wants to make a replacement site, they don't need to fuck around finding a server outside EU, because that's not relevant.

The European "PD" (personal data) is a significantly boarder term than the US "PII". Pretty much any data gathered from or about you or about your activities are considered PD, and this is not a question about if it can be traced back to you in any way, but about the ownership of the data, which is yours indefinitely and permanently.

For example - if you look at GDPR as it is now - if you go to the gym and the running pad collects usage data, then the data what it will collect during the time you are using the machine will be your personal data, and you can do anything with it as you see it. You can request its deletion, transfer, etc.


I'm not saying that GDPR is sane in its current form or a compliance to it is fully doable but still that is what will come into effect at the end of the next month, nothing we can do about it.

this is good btw. Data should not belong to the collecting, but to the producing entity by default. I.e. to the user who generated the data, and not the corporation or individual behind the platform where the data was generated and collected. This will sound irrelevant and overblown in this particular discussion about ELO rating in a game with <10k players, but any piece of data, like the fact that a person likes band so-and-so, performs so-and-so in the gym, is single, or has a QL duel ELO of 1100 while owning a 60hz screen and laser mouse, is potentially profitable to the entity holding it as advertisers will actually pay money for that piece of information in order to generate targeted advertising to bombard the person with. It's where Facebook's 40 billion dollars of revenue per year come from (that's 20$ per user). Relevant video.

I agree. There have been attempts to make software where data is on some place owned by you, and other websites and applications only use it as long as they can get it from your place. This means that you wouldn't even have to go to facebook to tell them to go away, you'd just restrict their access from your own place.

How about just make a licence of agreement on the qlstats page for stats tracking? That way people have to verify their steamID with e-mail and whatnot before getting ELO tracked. It might take a hit in total users, but the people that truly care about it will verify.

Also good way to keep the unverified people out of the qlstats servers. Good countermeasure to smurf & cheataccounts. QL community is small, so large portion of the people will know about verification by hearsay.

I'm guessing you mean that users would need to login to qlstats page via Steam OpenID and agree to be tracked. That would also give them an option to have their stats be deleted if they choose to.

It could be a simple registration page where you agree with terms of service, put in your SteamID, get a verification code per e-mail and are good to go. Whole process should take less than a minute.

Users should be allowed to disable tracking, but any stats towards that point should be remembered, will that user enable again then he won't be able to tierslum since last known ELO/rating will be applied to him (with some penalty maybe). Ofcourse this should be noted in terms of service. Anyways I recommend the team to discourage people disabling tracking and make it only possible with an e-mail option to the admins only.

People can setup their servers that allow registrated people (only) and plugin-creators can make it so that people get a msg that they aren't registered when entering server or joining a match. I honestly don't think this will divide people too much in QL and people can enable autokick for unregistered, just like people get kicked for not meeting the ELO-prerequisite of the server.

Doubt this will be too much work on the end of the qlstats & plug-in team and to me sounds like a proper workaround for these new regulations.

Anyway, it's just an idea.

thats my general concern with the new GDPR. small businesses that have collected the most basic customer data (name, adress, phone) because of "industrie 4.0 and digitisation or gtfo" aswell as hobby people & volunteers are affected the most.
Neither were they the cause why the GDPR change was needed, nor are they able to adapt to the change in a proper way. The new law is rather vague, the possible punishments severe. Noone can afford the time or money when the waves of lawyers swarm the EU to try and suck money out of this new regulations.

The GDPR was changed to regulate big data cooperations and rightfully so. Those have the ressources tho to adapt or negotiate for special treatments. It bothers me how an evergrowing system of laws and regulations kills of the good stuff while not really affecting the bad stuff

I'm tired of all that, and if this GDPR helps spreading my crap around I'm all for it.

GDPR doesn't change that at all. The only thing that will change is that more websites than now will greet you with a "we use cookies" warning (that users will block anyway using adblock, which is also what the companies running the sites hope for. great system).
and companies will start to pay a fee to a data protection guy who will most likely never talk to any employee, just to get rid of potential lawsuites.

Don't know about your country, but here public phonebooks exist, and you can lookup the adress and landline number of basically any citizen. Though that doesn't explain the girlfriend thing.

My armchair guess would be that your mobile operator is selling them that information. If you've ever written it in an email, it could also be your email provider.

This is the best news I've heard about any game in a long while. ELO hasn't done anything good for the game. It doesn't do anything but cause players skill to plateau, makes people constantly whine about uneven teams after a map has started, and defeats the point of team games in the first place by allowing the shuffling of players after the map has started.

It also limits better players from even finding a game once they've reached a certain ELO level. Thus usually causing them to purposely sack more than a few games just to lower their ELO in order to actually be able to play the game at all which just defeats the entire point of the ELO system in the first place.

Random shuffle makes for more fun games. If you find yourself getting raped in a game then use it as a chance to learn and improve instead of expecting everything to be easy like it seems the majority of modern gamers do nowadays.
