it can be attributed to the gradual decline of players and dreamhack's move from being a lan party to a pro gaming league, well the decline of players has something to do with id's move to steam to make quake a buy-to-play game, there it really showed who are the true supporters and the food-stamp players (who wants to get everything for free)

LUL I hope you remember that ID gave existing QL players a free steam copy. Otherwise, that's quite a hilarious assumption on your part.

Technically there was some loss on the Pro subs at the time, my spend on QL including subs gifted to friends was a few hundred dollars. But I totally agree that ID made sure that existing players got the game for free.

yep and i remember how the food-stamp players complaining how client ql > steam ql, and when the permanent switch came and because they're too lazy to switch, it's history from there on

Dreamhack did not make any money from having Quake there. They still supported Quake for long time even if they were loosing money keeping it.

That's what spart1e likes to think. The real reason is that they were making too many losses from damage caused by spart1e parties!

i've quit that game not because it's dead but because the development took a path i wasn't expecting, I still map from time to time when i am extremely bored.

quake isn't fun anymore for me these days, the future will tell whether quake can be a thing again or not.
