here is one way to do it:

- paint a box around the stuff you want to show in the grid view
- right click: select -> select inside
- press i to invert the selection
- press h to hide the selection

Thanks man, this gave me another idea. I select only what i want then i press "i" to invert selection and i hide the selection.
