Well, i only play on very difficult SERVERS and I have less than 18 hrs playtime. It safe to say I'm gonna get wiped by known players, but on a new map, with the same playtime as someone else, I would do surprisingly well. And unlike them I can perform well in other games like driving and fighting.

I never saw the point in sticking to one game and just reaching a high level of tune in it. I would rather be able to beat 99% of the players in my choosen genres, than worrying about having big scores pulled on me by less than 100 people on the entire planet who pretty much are exclusively good at that game only.

I had an interesting conversation with Draven today, he wiped the floor with me on ZTN and he recalled a few years ago me and Miss X used to beat him at quake 3.

I even recalled his disgust at losing a game to me in Quake 4, but its a good example of how good someone can become if they stick at something and cements my point that in pretty much any game you reach a point where in order to get that few % better, you have to put in a level of investment which just makes the thing less fun.

So take it as an excuse or whatever, but I'm just saying, like in boxing, there are different weights for a reason, I don't expect to win against heavyweight players regardless of my skill.

I "suck" at quake because of the level of investment I put into the game, vs the investment my opponents who pull big scores on me do.

You seem to have a problem understanding the simple FACT that in anything, if someone trains at something they become better than those that don't.

Its a basic FACT of life.

If you saw me on q3 servers day after, year after year I might agree, the fact that I have 20 hours of game over a 7 months periord in quakelive and don't have q3 installed should tell you, that I'm not exactly trying here. Especially when most players who pull more than 10 frags on me have about 18hrs a week at the minimum.

I have played enough videogames to know that its mostly a case of putting in the hours against good opponents.

This is not some natural super sport like in spriting you're born with the goods. Practically anyone can get good by dumping hours in, particually over a 10 year period the same duel maps, weapons, timings are being used.

I really think you need to gain some perspective on your passtime.

just because czm / x player were good then when putting in effort doesn't mean they will be still be good during x period with or without effort, although czm would have been up there most likely.

it's not as if rapha, spartie or cypher etc. are any worse than whoever. in fact if you watch the games it's evident (naturally) that everything they do is far better than that of what czm (and others) were doing at their time.

i also fail to see how with czm and co being around and active makes it any harder for others to practice, in fact it probably makes it easier the only thing that is harder is that there is more competition but that makes it as hard for czm and co as it does rapha and co thus it's irrelevant.

Rapha was around when CZM (+z4+socrates) was around, the reason he's known now is because he simply wasn't good enough to be known at the time and all the top duellers like paul, jason, john retired and became out of sync.

Had those players kept playing, I find it very hard to believe he would not take anything off an in shape CZM given he has followed unheard (to most) for many years.

So its not an assumption at all, its generally how things work, good players seldom get overtaken for without reason, that is why the same people keep winning tournaments and when the old pro's don't, its more to do with them moving on in life, than simply being surpassed by new players.

There are divisions in boxing because you can't change how big you are. These static restrictions do not apply in Quake - you're only bad if you don't practice.

When you're a kid you can play and play and not worry about anything, even in your early 20's you can get away with it, but there comes a time when its impossible for most people to maintain that life, and there also comes a time when you don't want to stay in a play games all day.

So its not a case of everyone having the same opportunites at all.

Yes if I wanted to destroy my life and go live in my parents basement I'm pretty sure I could get exceptionally good at this game. But in no way would I want to and before some loser goes yeah yeah, I would urge you to gain some perspecitve on life and realise that there are more desirable things to be good at than 20th century first person shooters.

Blah blah, you're describing a CHOICE. There is no middle ground here - just like everything in life, you have to learn and practice to be good at it. You haven't, and you never will. If you're working so much that you can't even enjoy your hobbies for a few hours a day, you've failed at life.

In most sports football or rugby even the first several 1000 people of a single country can make a successful living at it playing at various levels. Even local players earn 1000 dollars a month playing in some crappy league nobody has ever heard of.

If that was the case in gaming, then I probably would, as would many others.

Sadly this is not the case, even really really good players don't make a dime from gaming, so don't make out like basing someone's entire life on the line just to be good at a game is suitable choice.

You're only going to make yourself look more ridicilous for suggesting that dropping your life to get good quakelive is even a remotely smart or balanced move and that the pressures of modern life do not increase with age because most people over 22 will tell you differently.

If all you do is work and sleep, your failures in life would only transition over into Quake anyway. You didn't prepare for your future, and you don't prepare for Quake. It's not rocket science.

Even a mere 4 hours a day is MORE than enough to gradually improve in Quake, or any hobby that you might have. Instead, you got good enough in Quake to beat some bots and newbies, and then you move on. You're so average, it hurts.

Playing 4 hours of quake a day is probably enough to get good i agree, but is not something most sane people want to do after working on computers all day. At least on a consistent basis, which is what is needed to keepy you in sync.

That would mean your life would consist of getting up, going to work, and then coming home, playing quake and going to bed.

Secondly, I'm a few years older than most of the top players, it means they were teenagers when they started playing.

I was working 55 hr weeks when I discovered quake from the works pc. Hardly the same as someone who was brought up on it.

The games I was brought up with at that time in my life were street fighter, and I'll be happy to smoke any quake 3 pro at that series because that's where my best years of gaming were invested at and that shows. I'll be on SF4 on the pc soon, come and try your luck andsee what happens.

I don't for one second think that I am naturally better at that series, anymore than I think certain quakers are considrably better than me for beating me at their game.

Gaming is not rocket science. You put the time and deication in and youur skills match that, but there comes a time when you can't game all day. So saying that we are all have equal opportunities is not correct.

Being good at Quake 3 and being good at Street Fighter are not mutually exclusive. You're already contradicting yourself in trying to downplay the experience that other have over you in Quake, and then attempting to promote the time you have spent in Street Fighter over others. Even with how much you try to tout your experience, I'm sure it ends with the same empty talk that you have provided with Quake.

If you like what you do at work, there should be no reason that you don't like what you do at home. If your job is so bad, go get a new one. I rather enjoy both playing and working on computers, but I take time away each day to hang out with my wife, go out to eat, watch a movie, and plenty of other things, as to stop it from getting old.

You don't have to play 4 hours every day, you just have to play on a somewhat consistent basis. If it's not important enough for you to get better at it, why do you care so much about what people think of your skills in it? You go out of your way to post a demo, and then you spend all this time trying to defend your position. If you spent half as much energy simply PLAYING the game, you might actually be able to advance to CPM.

Some comments sound as if you couldnt play this game casually, I mean what's the problem with that? You play totally relaxed and not hardcore right? Or is it a requirement to be 10000% of your skill all the time?

And I agree with you - playing Q totally straight-faced is so FUCKING BORING. What the hell for? I'm proffesional in a board room or during business negotiations, why should I care about that ingame? People engage in serious discussions and DRAMA as if their life depended on it. I understand us doing that when we were teens as we didnt know shit about adult world and thought that opur ingame wars and arguments were SO SERIOUS and IMPORTANT. But now?
