overall, I think it is a reflection of the gamers interests. it's amazing quake is going as strong as it is, anyway. but, there have been so many drive by games that each took some piece of collective mind.

Hmm.. even tho that is the logical way of thought I don't think that's the 'core' that drives this site, or any other for that matter.
Yes, getting folks in and sharing and all that what seems to be the trend nowdays could certainly boost number of users but I don't see that as the requirement to 'revive' the site.

In my opinion, being a part of it (ESR) for some time now, is the fact that it is very community driven. Admin's have been very tolerable towards site users and their posting habits. I don't see that as a wrong approach, quite the opposit, it's really refreshing to find a site with that kind of freedom. But the community also has the 'power' to shape itself and the website it's residing on.
What I mean is, that the site has become solely a Quake game related site. No other game has any place here amongst this community. Yes, the Quake scene needes a place to be, needs a community and it seems they have found it. But what happens is that even that community is being ignored by the Quake developers or it's supporters to some extent.
Is that a bad thing? Should we chase away people who have been on this site for years? More than often contributed to this site and the game they care about? Anyone with a little common sense would and should say 'no'.

On the other hand, looking at it realistically, Quake is not what it used to be. There are people out there doing their best to provide tournaments, events etc. But the fact remains, the 'game' is not as active and rich in new content as it once was.
We all know that id software is not dead. They are still making games. They still support and work on QuakeLive. So nothing is 'dead' as some users make it out to be. You never know when a new quake will come out or some new feature added to the existing one.

What would be required of this community is to be a little bit more open minded and receptive when it comes to non-Quake games.
Yes, I know you're gonna say, we don't need those cs:go or CoD or DotA2 kids roaming around here. Trust me with this kind of community, and it's maturity (yes, there are those that aren't very but not too many) they won't stick around for too long.
This is a quality driven website with good people and good intentions so let it breathe some of that fresh air.

Yeah, I remember the days when every day I read interesting news, discussions about coming lans, big online tournaments ala faceit, rising players, discussions about recent lan games, form of the players and so on, and so on. Now I still log/check every day, but the *relevant* content is nonexistent. There is just nothing to talk about except few interesting matches the last sunday(125fps, big thanks to them and Alexey A. !!! as if not them then.. yeah), but that is covered in 5 most 10m read + few semi relevant/interesting threads here and there. No lans, no rising stars, a lot smaller player base compared to 2009-2010, a lot less good players playing.. just nothing really to talk about. Not your fault or site fall, it's about the game. We need the next quake, but in reality it's long down the road + most likely it will be spoiled from bad dev. decisions/small budget anyway that will make it just a so/so game.

Yeah, and since xou left most of the content is a bloody mess. ArenaFPS games have a very small playerbase, and even smaller audience, and it's hard to constantly report as-fact news (x is happening, y did happen, etc...) because it's boring. Creating interesting content for these sorts of games are hard because what's the "buzz"? Is there a new prodigious young player destroying old players? is there a mysterious organization about to come into the scene and support tournaments? Will Team A finally mange to overcome Team B?

There are no interesting story lines, nothing captivating at all. The only thing that's interesting is that are new games coming, and some of them are promising. Other than that, what else is there really?
