You have a strange idea about the necessity of ECC memory:)

You need ECC in situations when the data are held in the memory for a long time (like in servers), and/or where data corruption is not acceptable at all.
Magnetic or electric interferences (caused by anything from the power supply to a solar flare or even the cosmic background radiation, etc) can "flip" the states of single bits in the memory, and that's where ECC comes handy, since the data can be restored to it's original state.

So no, ECC is not obsolete at all.
