What an overrated album that did NOT stand the test of time.

What does it mean? D:

They had a few good ideas that were poorly executed, and laid the groundwork for bands to do much better stuff. For a "progressive" rock band, I can't think of a time that they ever changed tones, mood, pace, or even time signature on their earlier works, when it would have been special to do so. I can randomly click anywhere on 3-4 of their albums and hear the exact same thing.

I wasn't aware that you can objectively quantify the quality of something subjective because a lot of people were told to like something.

A great band does not mean they are necessarily a good band.

I'll say they're good, and maybe even more-so for their time, but they've only written maybe 3 parts. Mid to slow tempo, 4/4, drawn out melodies and weak singing. Sprinkle in a cheesy sample and an ALMOST upbeat moment every now and then, and I'm pretty sure I've described just about their entire career.

That's embarrassingly weak for one of the "greatest prog bands" of all time.

4/4 is not always a bad thing.

I wouldn't define their genre as mainly "progressive rock", I'd prefer "psychedelic/space rock" or something like that.

Compared to now, they're not even good at psychedelic/space rock.

So who's good at psychedelic/space rock?

There's no denying the similarities to Pink Floyd and the influence they have on this album. This is what Pink Floyd paved the way for. It's an album about getting lost in space and running from the devil as a metaphor for the drummer coping with the loss of his sister to suicide. Mastodon's strength is momentum, and this album feels like a journey. This is more on the psychedelic side than the space rock side.

I like Mastodon, but I don't see why they should be considered better than Pink Floyd in psychedelic rock. Well, de gustibus

Because Mastodon took Pink Floyd's ideas and used them to their potential.

Again, haven't listened to much music this year, but just few weeks new Grimes album Art Angels come out, and as I liked few tracks from her previous album, I decided to check it out, and it's been playing a lot in my head, very fun and catchy pop album, and just getting better the more I listen to it. So I'd give it my limited choice of AOTY.

As for track, Kill V. Maim from same record is my current fav.
