most games need 2 cores at best, and with a budget of $150 you suggest to upgrade cpu. even a gf750 only barely meets requirement for newer games. his old c2d cpu can be overclocked to meet a minimum requirement.

a dual core pentium g3220 based on same c2d architecture is pushing out higher fps than many modern quad core cpus. its per core performance that counts, not the amount of cores. yes you need quad core for some ai heavy open area games like arma and gta, but most games run just fine on a 2006 c2d+ cpu with 2 cores.

ps4 and xone have 8 amd cores clocked at around 1.6ghz, i really dont think we will see any cpu intensive games in the future as these cpus are barely usable for any serious cpu intensive task. keep in mind if a game is not optimized for multicore support all those extra cores will be kept idling and consuming extra power and producing heat that lessens your overcloking potential, we are talking about 150 dollar upgrade, not a 1500 dollar build.

My brother had an E5200 (a pretty decent Cpu at his time) and went to a Q8200S (similar IPC, but 4 cores) and definitely felt the upgrade both in games that in Windows usage


Even on my mother pc, going from an E5200 to an E8400 (2.5 vs 3 ghz & 2mb to 6mb cache) definitely improved her desktop experience.

thats because your previous cpu was an amd cpu which has much less per core performance than a c2d cpu.

his current gfx card is an x1950 which came out before gf8800, i dont think any cpu would fix that low performance, and even gf750 is not meeting recommended requirements of many games that come out today. you keep overstimating a cpu performance over gpu in gaming. ofc there would be a couple odd games like gta that would be badly optimized just to require a quad core, good games however dont need that and his existing c2d cpu could be overclocked to 3ghz and above to run most games on medium just fine. if he had a huge budget like 1500 maybe i would suggest getting a quad core just to run a few of those obscurely optimized games like gta, but with a budget of 150 he would be lucky to run anything on medium regardless what choice he would make. i would still recommend for gaming to upgrade a gpu first, regardless what cpu he has as graphics cards had made much more performance improvement since 2006 than any cpu architecture and that would be a smarter choice to upgrade.

Phenom II architecture (to which X4 955 belongs) when it entered the market in 2009, was able to reach the Core2duo IPC.

Then again, it failed to reach the IPC of the new Core architecture (Nehalem) architecture that arrived almost in the same period.


You really forget how slow is Core2Duo architecture for today standards.

It was just a bit faster than AMD Athlon AM2-AM3 and Phenom 1st generation processors, but a bit slower than Phenom II and a lot slower than the future 1st Generation Core processors (Nehalem i7 and Clarkdale i5/i3)

i know that a cpu has some effect on games but its not a dramatic performance increase from generation to generation. if i were to upgrade i would be very conservative about upgrading a cpu unless its a few generations behind, even then i would still rather just stick in a better gpu card rather than attempting to swap a cpu. not all games take advantage of multicore and most multicore cpus have lower clocked cores which would even out any benefit extra cores would have. most quake-like games are strict single core performance games.

You could do what you said, get more RAM and better graphics card.

But I wouldn't suggest you pick up another older PC for cheap and make it last. You'd be better off buying a whole new build and then using it for another decade or more.

I think going with something based on Intel 6th series with DDR4 is fine, but personally I would wait for the next AMD Zen series, which will have a stream of announcements in 2016. It's almost the end of the year, and hopefully AMD Zen will turn out really good to be an option for you.

If you read a bit about Zen, AMD have literally put everything aside to make sure Zen is extremely competitive and I am hoping it is really great as well.

You would better upgrade everything because how old everything is in your config...
And to spend the less money possibile, you should look for an APU like an AMD A10-6800 or better an A10-7850K (cpu+gpu integrated)

B)less power consumption = YES
but we are speaking of <5 watt of an SSD and <12 watt of a modern hard drive.
They are both low values. Indeed, SSD pwr values are even lower.


2) if you noticed this difference between Linux and Windows, it's more related to the file-system on the usb device: Linux NTFS-3G and FUSE-exfat drivers still have a lot of overhead compared to native Windows drivers.

I tried to find one of those Gecube Radeon X1950 XT TEC X-Turbo 256 MB GDDR3, but it is almost impossible... I laso considered for my s478 build a Gigabyte I-Ram but I kinda lost it in a bid fight on ebay... The ageia ppu card would be a nice complement as well! I might add a couple of sata velociaptors tho ;) I named this buiild purple Haze because i have modded the case, painted it all black and added some purple UV leds, it looks sick bro!

The only reason I did not get the 4x512MB of ocz EL's (i have a couple of 4x512MB Patriot XBLK TCCD DDR400 2 2 2 5) is because with 4 slots of ram populated you cannot oc that high and also the ram settings need to be further relaxed... Which revision of the motherboard do you have? You might want to get a socket 771 Xeon with an adapter. Those are very cheap and better value than the C2Q CPUs.

You can buy another 2 memory modules ofc, but it will demand more from the PSU and from the motherboard, some 775 boards were less stable with 4 modules...

Make sure you PSU is in good shape and can take the heavier CPU and the new video card....

An SSD will make a huge difference and you can use it later in a new system as well, but don't go below 120GB.

Yes, change the video card to something cheap and fast, but don't spend too much money on that old rig, not worth it.

1) CPU:

as Kapca suggested, check your PSU ;)

q9300 is 95 watt tdp and e6700 is 65 watt, so it isn't a huge steap away (just 30 watt more) but if your PSU is really low on wattage, a check would be advisable

2) GPU:

i suggest you something cheap, if you want to really fit in the <150€ budget

cheap means 60€ so in the used market: hd 7770 or hd 6850

they are still decent cards to play at medium details


there isn't much of new a the same performance at that price, but you can find the R7 250 or GT 740 at a similar price for a bit less (15-20% of performance), but be careful to buy the GDDR5 variant instead of the GDDR3 (they roughly cost the same, but GDDR3 is MUCH slower)



3) SSD:

go for 128 gb, Sandisk has some cheap SSD that cost around 50€

also Samsung and Crucial make cheap 128 gb model

anyway performance is similar at this price tag


4) RAM:
you can buy an addictional 2x2gb kit, dual channel would still work (anyway, loosing it really means almost nothing from the performance point of view)

be careful though that some mobos have problems with 4 banks of ram, so most of the time going for a 2 dimms-only configuration is safer than going to 4 dimms

you could buy the 2x2 ram on Amazon and try to add it to your mobo, if it gives problems, you have month to ask for a refund and send back the item (expedition cost is always at their charge, even for return ;) )


PS: for the Xeon suggestion: it really depends on your motherboard, and it's not alwats clear if it's compatibile or not.
Check on Google if there is a history of users with your same motherboard model/revision mounting a Xeon, buying something the not being able to use it, i'ts terrible.

i tried to overclock my CPU but i cant get it running.
the FSB is set to 333MHz default and the multiplier is max 8 (+0.5 tuning), so i have a maximum 2,83GHz.
as soon as i try to increase the FSB my system restarts before the memory test and sets the FSB back to 333MHz.
i tried it with 400MHz first (and lowered the multiplier to 7,5) - doesnt work.
then i tried 350MHz x 8,5 - nothing (even if 350MHz x 8 was working .. still only 2,8GHz)

any suggestions why it doesnt work?
untill now i read a whole lot of "overclocking for dummies"-guides but it didnt help.
i even tried to increase the vcore step by step - no success.

Might be quite a few things. The two worst case scenario are a) That's the end of your CPU - which I doubt, b) P965 motherboard - Yorkfield meh.

you have to increase the FSB/chipset voltage, whatever it's called on your mainboard.
this was also the limiting factor back then when i had a Q9550, which ran at 3.4Ghz IIRC.
if you increase FSB, you might have to take a lower multiplier for the RAM too.

by how much do you have to increase FSB voltage?
i increased it step by step up to +2.5V (still doesnt work) .. is it safe to go further (it goes up to 4.0 i think in 0.5V steps)?
i read something (it was about the CPU) that the heat increases exponentially with the voltage, whereas it increases linear with the frequency. does this apply also to the FSB?

if you already tried +2.5V, then this is not the problem why you can't get higher stable FSB.
You can set it back to default for now.
On my my mainboard it was called "MCH" which was at 1.25V standard, and wouldn't go over 2V.

I didn't have to increase VCore when overclocking my old E6600, just make sure the RAM runs within the specification by changing the RAM multiplier. Do that first.

If your mainboard allows a high FSB, then you eventually have to raise VCore too, but he's far far away from that.

A used i5 2400/2500/2500k/2600k + something like a AMD 7970 or 770 gtx at around 400-500 € would prly be the best thing you could get in terms of performance/cost and longevity.

A decent GPU will boost game performance much more than a new CPU, but you need to take care if your PSU is supporting, let's say, an old top end GPU in terms of wattage and amp.

the Solution

Thinking about this, the USB key only being recognized if it was unplugged and then plugged in again suggests that somehow, if the USB key is inserted at the time the machine is powered up, the motherboard gets into a mode where it doesn't recognize the key and it gets ignored until a operating system driver starts up. But later in the boot cycle, the motherboard does seem to be able to recognize it. So what I did was simple:
I started the machine with the USB key unplugged;
Once the machine had got through the first parts of its boot sequence, I plugged the key in, then hit the F12 key to bring up the boot menu. And on the third try, there the USB key was, on the list of hard drives. And it booted fine!
Two thing to note here - what I found worked, for me anyway, was to plug the USB key in just after the BIOS displayed the list of PCI devices, and just as it gave its "Verifying DMI pool" message. Secondly, note that the USB key appears on the list of hard drives.

Now I must admit, plugging the USB key in during the boot sequence is neither elegant or reliable - you'll probably have to try it a few times - but it worked for me.

Win10 gives me a nazi kinda vibe. Microsoft want to enforce auto updating and in general want to control more of your OS.

At least with Win8.1 you get those performance benefits over Win7, without being knee deep in the rabbit hole with Win10.

It's a bit of both; the SSD is actually making it run faster, and then Win8.1 is 'showing' you how fast it can be since it has better startup times and is a tad snappier in basic system processes like copying etc. The major player here is the SSD ofcourse, I've used early SSDs on early netbooks and it was like breathing new life into the system.

I know 125Hz sucks, but I ultimately gave up on the Intelli series. They are phenomenal mice but they don't deliver what I need personally, and will just be a special piece of nostalgia. Same goes for Quake :>

stop id`s rage x86 from freezing after 30-60 seconds

the main thing is probably just switch RAS to RAS to 6ms, any other change setting will give you some extra blocks when you first spawn in a map
