You should try using accel with rockets. It's arguably the weapon that benefits the most from accel.

The best rocket player without accel i've seen was cooller at the moscow lan. Even then you could see the lack of accel hurt his rl. My advice for good rl without accel is to do tons of small flicks if your about to get in a fight because you want your mouse to be centered in the mousepad. Also forgot to mention i also do the small flick thing while i'm waiting for the rocket to reload. But cos i use accel unlike you sometimes i don't even need to flick and just track with my rockets cos i find tracking better than flicking. Just get a feel for it and either track with rockets or flick when you feel the need too.

Also you could use a higher m_pitch around what cooller uses but that shit can take a while to get used too and unless you're struggling with vertical aiming with rockets, it's better left untouched.

i mean he can have better rockets but i still have better shaft rail shotgun etc.. I can beat him quite easily in 1v1 cause i have space to dodge and +back lg :D... but in 2v2 CA you are forced into situations where you MUST use rl only to beat your opponent, the lg is barely needed.

my rail is ok, i can do flick shots and "wait for the enemy to enter your crosshair" kind of shots. My reflexes with this weapon are quite good actually.

sometimes i have 65%+ and sometimes only 35%-, depends on the opponents/situations/games

i'm far from having the best rail ever tho, actually a lot of people beat me rail only. But i don't care much about this weapon cause in 1v1 or 2v2 CA it's more a matter of hitting the most important shots rather than reaching high accuracies with it. So i can live with it. Not having the best rail doesn't make me lose the game 90% of the time.

well m1sia you out-lg'ed me once or twice at 2v2 on the map electrichead ;). But if we play 1v1 or 2v2 against each others more often i doubt that you will out-lg me :D. Ofc you can do it from time to time but you know that the only way to beat me is using rl and also maybe rail ;)

also i know your rail is probably better than mine, and you play defensive +b rail very well, especially on thunder 2v2.

when i lose a 2v2 CA game where the teams are balanced it's not because of my shaft but rather because of my sucky rockets ;)

also 2-3 or even 4 months ago you spectated me playing uraz lg only. And yep he beat me 3-4 maps to 1. So yeah he had better lg than me at that time. But since then i changed mouse (no more deathadder 2k13 for me) and went back to the abyssus (well new abyssus 2k14 but it's almost the same really) and kept practicing quite a lot.
More recently i played uraz in 2v2/1v1 and this time i out-shafted him (but you weren't there to see it). I also played szr on eyetoeye and won the 2 games we did on it, and it was almost (95%) lg only. I also beat knoxe in 2v2 lg only where i had him 100% of the time as opponent and he even said something like "can't hit heartless" :D.
I beat also T1hol and Todesknecht on drunkenmummy and windowpain while almost using lg only. And pix_ , the polish lg master.

Ofc when i play your 2v2 CAT cups i tend to choke a lot and get beat by supposely lesser opponents but that's cause i lost my confidence cause of changing mouse everytime and also cause of my trash rockets.

And when i play 2v2 on my server for practice, no matter who joins my server, nobody can out-lg me consistently. Not saying it's impossible to out-lg me, but if we count a bo5+ then i win all my bo5+. ;)

And if you think i'm lying to you well just ask leaf_ :) He saw quite a lot of the games i mentionned above :)

But if you want you can ask uraz to play 1v1 lg only again and you will see ;). I'm also open for any kind of 1v1 lg only vs you ;)

I'm not saying i would win vs you and fragsau. But for example when i placed 3rd with larri we lost vs jusuinen and dronsu. I beat both of them at practice games. Last time at the 2v2 CAT cup we won 1st confrontation 2 maps to 1 then they came from lower bracket and won 2 maps to 1 aswell. I had lags and less than 100fps on the 2nd map. Games were close still. I didn't feel comfortable. By no mean i'm saying they're noobs, i'm not like that. Actually they are GOOD, no doubt about that. But still, it's almost like if you and fragsau (except that you and fragsau are better than larri and me at 2v2) lost to them, even if you would, you would still be better than them.

drawCrosshair 7, medium-size (35-45), good color for your cfg, accel, around 100ish fov, playerLean 0.9-1, lot of practice. Aim for feet mainly, don't forget that splash damage exists and it's not hitscan. Get accustomed to the rockets' speed.

Well, I have a terrible mouse right now and I'm mostly based on rockets because I can't aim at all with. All I can tell you is that I don't aim that much, it's my dodging doing all the work and I've never been that good with the weapon til now.

While you are waiting you should keep focus on your dodging until you are in a situation where you will hit and won't get hit.

Not much to say about rockets imo

Either take your time to aim the rocket for a direct shot, or flick the rocket extremely fucking quick (accel helps for this)

My flick rockets always hit. If its a direct shot, I take a second to line it up then fire.I don't continuously shoot or hold attack.

For movement:
I like the forward/back movements to bait them to shoot a rocket in front of me, so I move back at the right time. Then the next rocket they shoot will be at where I was (further back) so I will jump over it, use their splash to propel myself into them, and rocket them in the side of the face.

That's my move with rockets. Just use the splashes as your actual movement.

Lol, then you clearly don't understand how quake works. K1llsen has insane rails but not THAT good lg. Strenx has insane LG but not THAT good rockets. Rapha's aim isn't that strong compared to most of the others quake players, his hitscans aim is nowhere near silencep strenx or toxjq. Quake is a game of playstyles. You can be good at some aspects of the game and bad at others but if you push the limits in the aspects you are good at, then you can be the best even if you still have weaknesses... But anyway at high lvl every player can be considered good at everything, and that applies to me too.
Also look at cypher, he seems to be only good at duel, he's awful at CTF and quite bad at TDM at least compared to l1nkin winz toxjq and silencep. But yet he remains one of the best, if not the best, quake dueler of all time. He's not the strongest all round player, because if he plays anything that isn't duel then he's clearly not as good as at duel.

Quake is a first person shooter, and the lg is all about raw aim and dodges (combat skills). So if you out-aim someone with lg then you are better at aiming/dodging than the other player, that's all. It's funny because when it's people like toxjq everyone is like "omfg look at this lg, this guy is dominating". When toxjq won almost all major events in quake 4 mainly because of his combat skills and more particularly because of his insane lg skills, people were like "omg this dude is a robot". But when it's a CA player, everyone is like "you're a nobody, you're nothing at quake, fuck off you autistic lg noob".
I don't care if i'm not a quakecon winner, I don't care if i'm not a dueler. I'm just a CA player, and my lg is very good, that's all. I did not work hard for it. I just try to play everyday for at least 2-3hours. I have a lot of fun doing it. If i could make a living by only playing quake I would probably do it. But will never happen. I have to stay realistic. But idc really, it's a game, it's fun, it's hard, the skill celling is infinite, I just love it. Quake for life.

Just a tidbit of random info: I've never been able to completely adjust to rockets in QL. in Q3 theres much more prediction required due to slower rockets, so naturally I'm always aiming where the opponent 'should go'. Of course they never fookin go where they're meant to.
Anyway, basically all I can say is just aim at their feet directly like you're going for a rail.

Rather than aiming at people's feet like most people say, you can focus on their shadow instead. I find it easier to follow the motion of someone's shadow rather than their feet. That won't help you hit sick middies though.

I often attempt to focus on the shadow. But the shadow in essence is an illusory object fluttering in and out of existence like a Mayfly on June 1st. Often I have tried to grasp it's spectral majesty, only for it to fall through my fingers like dew on morning grass.

How many hours do you think a person can progress into LG skill?

Honest question, it's my favorite gun and I wonder how long it will take me to match some of the best players I see around. I keep putting time into it, and I keep surprising myself how much better some people are.

it depends.

if you are under 20 years old you learn faster but you assimilate less the "experience"

if you are older than 21 yo you learn slower but you tend to get experience a bit more easily



if you are under 20 and you always play stronger opponents and you stay calm and don't rage and try to focus at 100% on the game while learning from your mistakes you will improve very fast if you keep playing regularly at least 2-3hours (minimum). If you practice almost only "lg only" then you'll probably need at least 4-6 months to see an improvment in your lg skills with this practice method. And to finally beat some of the known very good "lg players" you'll probably need 1 year by playing regularly (almost everyday 3h a day).
If you play minimum 6 hours a day then depending if you can handle it and don't get too tired (hands and brain) after 4 hours, you will probably get better 2x faster (so 6 months instead of 12 months to see a huge improvment).



if you are older than 21 it's different. You don't need to play more than 2-3 hours a day 5-7 times a week. If you play 5 times a week 2 hours and any kind of opponents (from noobs to very skilled players) you will improve slowly but surely. I wouldn't recommend you to not play too strong opponent at first, play people that are just a bit weaker than you, and repeat, repeat, repeat. From time to time play noobs, it's always rewarding to get 45%+ lg and 10-0 / 10-2 scores :D, and it's decent warmup method. From time to time also play more skilled players than you (if you can do it 2-3 times a week it's nice). Try to find equally skilled opponents and practice with them after adding them into your friendlist. With this practice method you'll need at least 14 months to see a huge improvment in your game. Like i said, slowly but surely.




if you are 24+ years old then pick someone who is equally skilled or a bit less skilled than you and practice with him 3-4 hours a day everyday lg-only. After 3 months you'll get more comfortable with your aim. After 6 months you'll get 25-40% stronger with the lg. After 8 months you'll get 45% stronger. Past 9 months i recommend to stop playing always the same opponent and change your practice method. After that try to play on public servers any kind of opponent, and repeat repeat repeat. :)




also if you are naturally talented you'll learn faster and improve faster as well as assimilate the experience better. But ofc without practice you won't ever improve. Practice, practice, practice (c) fatal1ty



and finally if at the end you're not meant to be a very strong "lg player" you'll figure it out yourself. No matter how hard you will practice or try you'll hit a skill celling and almost never improve over time. But it's really hard to say if it's a waste of time or not to practice the lg. I mean, sometimes you need like 3 years to realize that you'll never be as good as player X or Y even if you practice hard for years...

Here's a good advice to improve your rocket. Call NASA.

Learning to dodge rockets was the best thing I ever did for my aim. You need to get inside the head of the person you're trying to hit before you can start hitting good shots.

good advice right here. If you're good at dodging rockets then you're good at knowing what strafe patterns a good dodger will do because you only need to think about how you would dodge in such a situation.

As for when you compare pro players certain skills/strongpoints eg strenx lg only, he is very strong lg but he didn't get as far as he did by being an lg whore only. He will be stronger that most with his rg and rail, same goes for killsen... His shaft is still very strong just not as strong as strenx's (and ofc yours). Most strafe LG aimmers have very poor rocket accuracy. I find having show player lean enabled and using a high - nudge and med to high sensitivity helps a lot after that its just forcing yourself to use the gun more. After the lg nerf I find rockets to be my primary weapon in most CA situations as to before it was mainly to knock enemies off or spam.

Watch some old q3 or painkiller demos with zyz. Had the strongest rl in a stacked field with actual prize money. Reppie in qw is a good example too.

Watching tdm with follow killer is like watching ffa. You don't get to see how players manage items, elevate their position, avoid enemy after spawn, team up, stack up and play their positions. It's mostly bang bang around the map.

I haven't played painkiller and don't like watching it. Terrible quality doesn't make it any easier to understand what's going on.
