So i bought a new monitor because i thought my 2233rz is broken. i got some graphic errors now and then while playing quake. Fortunatly it was just my 560ti which was dieing slowly. (i was already on my last working DVI port. HDMI broke a long time ago)

Now i noticed that dragging windows seems to be much smoother on the 120hz samsung as on the 144hz asus screen. Is that normal? Not that this would be a problem. Just wondering. The monitor seems awesome for gaming, but i have to use this old ati 4850 HD. It does 200-250 FPS in quake, but my 2233rz is still going strong. I think about getting a new graphics card for the money, as i also play other games which only do like 45 fps now. (with the 560ti it was only 20-30 fps more, so it was time to upgrade anyways)

So someone noticed the same with dragging windows? Shouldn't it be much smoother than on the samsung 120hz?

What do you mean with smoother?

With the cursor and window dragging behaviour there are two possible scenarios from what I have learned: VSync'd desktop environment and non-VSync'd.
I know that NVIDIA drivers VSync the cursor, so without them the cursor position is more responsive but shows tearing artifacts (which could be perceived as "unsmooth").
The same is possible for window dragging, but honestly I don't know if it's even possible to disable VSync for that.
You can in Windows disable Aero/Compositing effects, but that only disables VSync for window contents, not dragging of the window itself.

with smoother i mean checking how much tearing is going on with moving pictures. On a 60hz screen its not very easy on the eyes trying to read the text from the catalyst control center for example. on 120hz screen you should be able to move the window twice as fast before it gets harder to read. On a 144 hz screen this should improve even further, but the opposite is the case from my tests (switching between 2233rz,120hz and vg248,144hz.)

Vsync is always disabled. Tested with a 4850HD @ DVI-D

use each monitor individually and see

iirc windows only syncs window movement for the primary monitor

what mouse hz? 500hz doesn't mesh well with 144hz (alternating 3 and 4 usb polls per refresh) so that could be why.

Do you have Aero (and thus, v-sync) on?

You should use the lightboost hack with this monitor if you haven't already, makes moving text perfectly readable and sharp (well at least try it)

Actually this Asus monitor should support native Lightboost, my bad. But anyway using the Lightboost hack can still be worth it for some people, the clarity of the picture in motion is just so ridiculously better.

This monitor should support native lightboost (whatever that means in this case) It has "nvidea lightboost" in its OSD menu. (greyed out on ati, if not using a hack)

lcd strobing adds a little (4ms at screen center) bit of lag, as the monitor waits for the last pixels of every frame to be updated before flashing the backlight to give you visual info

Only 4 ms? that would be nothing. Maybe the ati card ran to slow to handle it properly.

I read prerendered frames 0 makes like 10-16 ms difference compared to 1. I tried it again after years with ATT (as i finally had the chance to do so) and it definatly felt more responsive vs. 1 (tested in source engine). I think i'm sensitive enough to notice such things. (but the placebo can be strong. anyway i switched it back and forth) I think if it didn't work and wouldn't harm (in some cases) nvidea wouldn't have to remove it. Just like they removed 5+ . (when i remember right that was exactly the value where it started to feel retarded, so i can understand this somehow, but many people used 0 just fine.)

from what ive measured in csgo, nvidia's max prerender setting doesnt matter at all unless vsync is one.. but it could be driver/game/engine dependent so who knows

the main disadvantage of strobing on lcds is that the screen becomes much dimmer

I liked it at first but it just doesn't feel responsive enough in quake. (the lightboost feature) I'm not affected from tearing anyways. This feature might be nice for people trying to adapt from CRT to LCD screens. But trying it on an old ATI card like me might not be the best idea. The only feature i'm interested in is gsync. But for now im back on my trusty 2233rz. The 24 extra hz isn't worth the money. Bought a new grapics card instead.

And as i already said v-sync is always disabled (althought it can feel quite nice with triplebuffer, if properly implemented eg. L4D1+2)
