CTF is pretty much a guaranteed loss no matter what with the american ctf teams. Duel is probably a guaranteed loss unless i got cypher or evil on the team (who might still possibly lose to rapha).

And with either of them on the team tdm might become troublesome as well. So since only the winning team gets any money my odds of making more than $0 there are pretty slim imho. ;)

The duel portion of the Tri-Master tourney doesn't have a "finals" since it uses a swiss tourney format. The duel competition can be interpreted as sort of a group stage of 16 where the top 2 advance to a one round playoff (the finals).

That's the beauty of it: this format very much favors 'murican and russian duelers, both that tend to at least play one team based gametype, over cypher who is fucked now since he only plays duel.

Since the duelers are chosen from the winning team this guarantees an epic final, such as rapha-dahang (should be closer than a 3-0 stomp), cooller-pavel (both duelers that have 0 chances of getting into a quakecon final) or noctis-deus (the "non duelers" that understood the format is 100% about teams and not about individual players). Unfair indeed, but epic nonetheless.

The "Grand Master Duel Finals" are 1 player per team from the top2 duel teams, so the players are not from the same team.

I honestly don't get that final since from what i understood it'll just be a repeat from the previous Tri-Master Duel tourney.


Another thing i don't get is why the duel part of the competition isn't like ESWC 2004 where 1 player plays 1 map. Because with the rules right now its just gonna be 1 designated player from each team playing the whole duel tourney (leaving out the other 75% of the players to never touch duel) since more than likely every team has a best duel player.

ESWC2004 was win, sadly that format did not get used anywhere else.

I thought it was team duel, like summing up the points or something, based on the phrase "the top two individual duelers selected by their team". However there's only one dueler in each team to begin with, so there's no selection. As you said the duel-part of the triathlon will be repeated in the duel-only grand final.

This complicated and weird system greatly benefits the 'muricans, whether purposely or not. It's clear that the muricans will win ctf and euros in tdm, so duel is the decider. With the duel part consisting of only one member of the team instead of all four playing, it so happens that both rapha and dahang are really good at ctf, while cypher and evil (the two top euro duelers) aren't in tdm and no euro tdm player can beat both rapha and dahang in duel. The organizer (syncerror) knows that.

With those rules the sole option I can see for your team is recruiting cypher, so he wins the duel part (1 out of 3 competitions), carry him in TDM 3v4 and win 2 to 3. One russian will do the same with evil. Thing is that disadvantage in TDM can lead to a loss in that gametype, against a euro team consisting of four tdmers, that in turn don't stand a chance in duel.

Had the duel part consisted of all four players -like it should have been since this is a team tournament- then euros could have stood a chance.

In your case I'd only compete if you get cypher in your team, otherwise there's no point really. Same goes to the other euros that wanted to attend with the intent to compete for first place, because the tournament is practically tailor made for rapha or dahang to win.

Also yes the second duel final makes no sense whatsoever from a competitive point of view. All the prize pool and attention should have went into the triathlon. The only reason I could fathom is that syncerror was told to have one tournament at the main stage (not zero not two), so the lazy way out was the same used last year which is repeating the grand final.

I want to say I think it would be a great setup for the competition.

Why? Besides showing all team modes with their own schedule will give every fan a chance to see their prefered mode. Duel isn't so very stretched out that you get tired of it after watching it for hours and hours.

There are prizes for every seperate mode, meaning people will be motivated to play all of them to their best.

When I first read this I thought it was a cool idea...then I read the rules in that it's basically 3 tournaments and realised it was bullshit.

UT2004 used to have tournaments like: 2*1v1, 1*2v2, 2 maps of 4v4...overall results of 3-0/3-1/3-2. There was 1 winner, not a 2v2 winner and a 4v4 winner. This should be the same.

In the current format it should be:
- same point system but in 2-4 groups (don't wanna reward consistent 1-2 losers)
- top 2-4 teams progress to playoffs
- $32k prize split based on overall positions...none of this TDM only winners bs
- separate $8k 1v1 tournie (not just top 2 teams); to keep it smaller (time conditions) you could make it bo1 until semis or limit it to players in the playoff stage of the tri tournie
- alternatively $40k single tri tournie

What if there's 3 teams close but 1 has a bad start (loses 1 match) but there's not enough rounds left for them to play 2nd place (although they could beat them). Also the 1st team might have already beaten 2nd-4th so forced to play 5th, 5th loses naturally but could have beaten the 4th team.

It just causes so much awkwardness compared to a standard group format

Please split up the modes into TDM & CTF Dual tournament and then a separate duel tournament. Nobody wants to watch two TDM'ers face off in the duel finals, and duel is a traditional quake mode on life support, we need to keep it alive for as long as possible.

Other than that, I like the combined team mode, in fact I suggested it a while back myself.

Read the rules again, you won't see 2 TDMers in the duel final.

In the duel stage of the TriMasters probably not.
But on stage, probably yes (or 2 ctf players).

The duel players for the stage final will be picked from the top2 teams of the Duel part of the tourney, not the overall point winners. So it's still gonna be the 2 best duellers.

Hmm, may actually re-install in May this year, instead of the standard June 1st.

Things I would change:
- Prize money split (maybe 6000, 1600, 400 for 1st, 2nd, 3rd) instead of winner take all 8000
- Change "Grand Master Duel Finals Stage" so that 8 teams can participate. Make it more of a true playoff with at least 4 teams.

The duel part of this format feels incomplete with so few games, especially considering duels are half the length of TDM and CTF games.

Overall though, this tri-tourney format is interesting. Everyone is already discussing ideal teams and such, so I'm looking forward to see how it will turn out.

I am selfishly speaking as a spectator. Ctf and Tdm are no fun to watch, and that seems to be most of the competitions. The top duel players that have been looking foward to this must feel slighted.

To me this looks like syncerror was asked to only have one tournament, plus 1v1 on stage, so this mess is the result of hin trying to circumvent his boss' orders.

A simpler way to do so would have been team duel (sum up points or change players per map). That or not try to disobey his boss and just host regular duel.

And this "leak" comes from Syncerror, to test the waters before doing it.

Great duel player doesnt make a good CTF player, ive tried quakecon ctf with strenx cooller and cypher didnt work (without practice), it needs practice teamplay knowledge of the map and some tweaks here and there i think duellers can adapt easier to TDM i'd say. Example @ quakecon cooller didnt know purgatory that well, i told him to hold some place on the map and he did well there, maybe even the best of our team :)

Why would they care about CTF at all?

All cypher needs to do is find some random 3 player American team (doesn't have to be good) and tell them he'll play ctf/tdm with them but has to play 1v1 & keep all the 1v1 money

Then he loses in the duel final against rapha, his team loses in CTF against EG and in TDM against some European team and he gets exactly $0. Sounds like a good plan.

even with a euro team they still lose CTF, TDM is a coin toss & his 1v1 chance reduces since he can't focus on only that (the euro TDM team would want to practice)

In a somewhat realistic scenario, the only top-level duellers he has to beat are dem0n, fazz and rapha. What's his chance of winning the tournament? Maybe 50-60%? And with a probability of 40-50% he gets $0? It makes no sense for anyone to sponsor him that trip.


Edit: Ok, if he achieves 2nd place in the triathlon-based duel tournament, he gets to play in another grand final. The probability of earning $0 is a bit lower due to that. It's still far from negligible.

By providing money for separate tournaments (only the winner) you’re encouraging a CTF team to only focus on CTF for the next 5 month, completely ignoring TDM for the promise of $8k. Then they just get ROFLstomped in TDM/1v1 but walk away with $8k…it’s called a tri-tournament but they’re not encouraging people to practice all 3 gametypes with this pay structure.

You forget this is America. There will be 2 teams that can fight for CTF/1v1. Then lose to the (only?) euro team in TDM.

2014 could cause an upset. If DaHanG & rapha are on the same team (as DaHanG seemed to want) then that upset is almost certainly gone (1v1 is a sure thing then they just need to win TDM/CTF vs the other US team).

I doubt there would be more than 1 fully euro team. There may be a 1/2 1v1ers joining with American teams but with no team practice they'd be focusing on 1v1.

This makes it harder for international players to justify going though, because either they have a team of 4 or they can't compete. What if 15 European players want to go? Only 12 of them can actually compete? I guess the other 3 could team with a random American, but would there even be any point with such a strong focus on team modes?

Last year lots of the 1v1 players entered the CTF tourney anyway. People will just play in comps because they're there. Restricting what people can play like this is really dumb, especially when this is the only global Quake event on the radar :c

Just when you thought it could not get worse, they surprise you.

It isn't even a triathlon.

In an actual triathlon, you don't give one trophy each to the fastest runner, the fastest swimmer, and the fastest cyclist. It's the combined performance that counts. If someone is 2nd best in all disciplines, he will end up 2nd place, and he deserves a prize worthy of being the 2nd best competitor overall.

So, the Quake Live Tri-Master obviously needs a point system, e.g.

1st in each competition gets 10 points
2nd in each competition gets 8 points
3rd/4th each get 6 points
...

Then you sum up the points at the end and distribute the prize pool like this:
1st place (with most points in total) gets $20,000
2nd place gets $12,000
3rd place gets $6,000
4th place gets $2,000

This is clearly the better way to handle the prize pool. I can't even think of a single reason why they would prefer the winner-takes-it-all approach.

The tournament is not supposed to be about duel players, it's supposed to be about teams competing in a triathlon. The teams merely feature a stand-out duel player as part of the team.

The point system would encourage European teams to become good at all three modes without the fear of getting $0 for it. What more do you want?

The current "first-place-or-nothing"-model sucks for them because everyone except evil/cypher has a very low chance of getting any money out of it. While I like the idea of the tournament, this current ruleset does make it harder for teams to be put together.

I think it's been stated maybe 20x already but, no top tier duelers will want to be on the same team, thus, limiting options and chances to win overall.

The real problem is the risk factor this tournament brings, even for top duellers like cypher and evil the chances of winning are now a lot smaller. Having a top 3/4 payout at least gives you a chance to calculate the risks to where it's doable. A winner takes all really isn't attractive when you have many players at a similar level.

For the team modes it's exactly the same x4, you can say you have 4 shots at winning 8k, but realisticly having a team that's good at ctf/tdm and duel is rare at best. And going for the overall win is a gamble as well.

I think the idea is good, the execution could be better.

euro team consisting of winz, noctis, linkin, and tox on top of my head could really compete for both ctf and tdm potentially? of course given that they at least have SOME practice before hand in ctf. then they can proceed to nominate tox for duel :D

Remember that in 2014 winz/l1nkin/zyrinx/gerrpa only had about a 50% chance of winning against the best 2-3 NA CTF teams.

So we could give the team you suggested:

20% chance for first place in CTF
60% chance for first place in TDM
10% chance for first place in duel (tox)

That leaves us with a 0.8 * 0.4 * 0.9 = 28% chance of getting $0.

We are still trying to figure out a team but if it turns out that 102 or colwn decides to go then i'll probably just stay home cause the odds of walking away with nothing would be dumb then. More than 1 potentially tdm winning team going from Europe is counter productive for everyone involved imho (but that might not stop it from still happening).

Btw. that NA allstar team of yours lost vs all 3 european tdm teams that attended qcon 2011.

I have to agree that sending more than one TDM team from Europe would be illogical. That's another big drawback of the prize system.

Unless, of course, one European team specializes on TDM and the other team on CTF. The CTF one will have a much harder time getting any money, though.

SyncError has already heard enough feedback from more then enough people. Giving out prizemoney for second place and/or third place in the individual tourneys doesn't work well with the Swiss tournament system they have decided for. That system is very good at finding the best team, but sucks for finding any other placing without having to possibly play multiple extra tie breaker rounds which would then fuck up the whole schedule. And i believe the schedule is already rather tight as is. The current system allows for everyone to play 4 games at the same time and it will produce a top team.

The other option of pooling all the Tri-Master money into the overall points result and paying out top3 or 4 might work but it could still result in weird point ties for the 2nd - 4th placements which are then even harder to solve.

I don't see a logistic problem there. If let's say the 2nd and 3rd best teams are tied on points, you just add the prize money for 2nd and 3rd place and give 50% to each team. Or am I missing something?

Granted, from a presentation viewpoint, it wouldn't be great to e.g. have two teams that share the 1st place. But who cares, really? They will only show the additional duel thing on stage, anyway.

What about a "sort-of" stand alone duel tournament with a point system per team? Maybe TWO people per team can duel or something then add up the points and that is who wins the duel division? I don't know. At this point I don't even know what to say.

It's already structured so that all 4 players can participate in the duel division if they want.

There are 4 rounds, so each teammate can play 1 match. However, it's most likely that teams will have their strongest dueler play all of them.

If you are suggesting that for each round each team chooses 2 players instead of 1 (so that you must have at least 2 duelers), that could also be interesting. The downside is it takes away the ability for individuals to solely control their own destiny.

I'd rather have a duel tourney with all the big names present, like we had last year. Only inviting one player from each (top qualified?) team would be sad. If it were my decision there'd be a set of FFA games to decide the brackets of the tourney, and then just have the tourney.

I believe I understand some of the reasons behind this choice:

- Promote quake as a whole, not just it's individual modes
- Introduce some novelty
- Raise the risk factor by having the winner taking it all.

Personally through, I am very disappointed.

Quakecon is the only tournament where we can expect serious competition, and yes, the current setup is - in my opinion - not serious at all. Might be fun, might be novel, but it's not serious. The reason is, the different game modes are very different, and even if you have players who might be good at more than one, most people aren't and have put all their focus one mastering one discipline. Having their performance in other mode affect their ability to progress in their main mode is counter productive.

In real sport a triathlon does not count as championships in the specific disciplines. It's still a nice event, which has a place aside of the true championships. So if this was one of 5 major tournaments, I would welcome the new format, but sadly it's the only one this year, and I would much rather have it stick to the serious competition.

If you really need a triathlon, do TDM, CTF and FFA instead

FFA in 4x 16player à 20min and count the frags of each team member in the end to determine the winner team of this mode.

This should also allow for a dedicated duel tournament that is open for everyone.

Last time i checked (today) there were FFA servers all around.

FFA instead of Duel in the Tri-marathon would be really great:

a) all players of the team could participate
b) 4x 20min FFA does take less time than the duel mode they have planned
c) even one of the dueler pickup groups have a chance to win this one mode
d) would be hillarious to watch

Well, you can still spawn FFA servers with classic settings, so that should not be the problem.

Of course, 16player FFA is still very messy - but you could choose some larger maps to help against that....and in the end, FFA is about chaos and still beeing able to see through that.

I am not sure why there was a constraint imposed to make this whole thing "one" tournament. There are nearly 3 full days of bandwidth to play the tournament matches. Even when (practically every year) there are two serious tournaments being run there is a a reasonable amount of downtime and scheduling is not a problem. I do not see why logistically it's not possible to please almost everyone:

Thursday July 23rd - Master Duel - $12,000

A standard duel tournament - invite only - 32 players.
Play all matches except Grand Final and Bronze match .
This would be just like last year with the schedule working out fine.

I agree with Dahang how even though somehow only one tournament is allowed, a technicality like that decides that a system that would benefit the tournament in terms of number of players that would travel for it isn't chosen.

I would make the duel 8k and the tri-thingy 6k-2k though.

I also think that a single elim bracket would be nicer so you get actual finals for the different divisions and clear placements for where you've ended up. And with single elim it wouldn't even take more time up.

Last year at QCon I heard that the plan was to have a DOOM tournament for this year's QCon if the game was ready. Marty Stratton has been quoted as saying that the new DOOM will have "fast paced competitive multiplayer," so given this information I can only assume that's what's going on here. We saw plenty of single player action, but nothing about the multiplayer beyond the above quote. I would imagine they will be showing DOOM publicly this year, instead of exclusively showing it to QCon attendees. What better way to get people hyped about the game than some good ol' fashioned multiplayer deathmatch?

That's my theory, anyway.

i did analysis and predictions about id over the last years. they all sounded nice because they contained logic. but my conclusion is, logic doesnt apply to id. better not expect doom 4 content this year...else you will get disappointed.

The only thing I'd probably change is I would adopt the ESWC2k4 ruleset where each player on your team is required to play x number of duels or maps for your team. Either way its hard to dislike this format if you're American.

The way I see it there is no team that could be assembled that would be able to beat or even take a map off of the top 2 CTF teams AND win the TDM event WITHOUT dropping a single map(which is probably what would need to happen to have any chance of being elidgable to send your star dueler in to the grand masters ((being top 2)).

The rules are interesting. On the one hand I can see why they were made from an American perspective, thinking that you wanted to spread out the talent among different teams. On the other hand doing this completely shuts the euros out of having any reasonable chance at winning some money.

However, It would be pretty easy to assemble a power-house American team that would completely eliminate all reasonable American competition in CTF (and obviously TDM and Duel) and ensure a win there, while maintaining a chance (albeit a low percentage chance) of winning TDM (overall) and DEFINITELY winning duel (overall). The rules are meant to discourage this but all that would need to happen is a chop between the top 2 duelers on the team to alleviate the player that does not duels woes on having to sit out in the grand masters. This would give the American team in question an overwhelming advantage of winning (almost) every portion of this event and basically all the money. Why would any euro team go knowing that this is a possibility?

Can't take away from the NA teams and what they've managed to do at QCON. However it does greatly favor the home teams and always will. If it were held on EU soil I think the results would be vastly different .

I like this new format it's a break from the same old stuff we see every year but it does seem like it's directly aimed in breaking up some of the NA teams and limits who some of the top duelers will play with i.e dahang and zer04 from last year will more then likely be on different teams due to this rule set.

I don't think that's true. Rapha and Dahang have never been in a CTF team together, so they can't be split up. Nobody from NA other than them has a a realistic chance of making money from duel.

As it turns out, zero4 rather wants to be on a strong team than to compete in duel. And it makes sense, because first place in duel isn't a realistic goal for him.

So yeah, the quality of the duel tournament has decreased, but the quality of the teams hasn't been affected at all.

well in that case I kinda agree with your post, although I still think an american team winning tdm is about as likely as a european team winning ctf if you consider the talent pool as a whole. although, granted, given this format, tdm teams that could steamroll anyone in the word (fearzz, latrommi, cooller, pavel or sth, basically 102) sadly may not attend. :(

I think you may have misunderstood the rules.

The rules say:

1.7.2 Grand Master Duel Finals Stage
Following the completion of the Swiss Triathlon Tournament, the top two ranked teams from the Duel Stage will be selected to compete in a best of five (Bo5) match. Each qualifying team will nominate one player from their team to compete in the Grand Master Duel Finals.

I understand this as: The best two duel players will play again, irrespective of their team's ranking in the overall triathlon.

However, note that it is possible for a different player from the same team to compete in the Grand Master Duel.
So, let's say rapha and DaHanG are on the same team, rapha competes in the triathlon's duel stage and finishes first or second. Then DaHanG could play in the Grand Master Duel instead of rapha.

tbh i think this is a good idea aslong as they tweak the rules. each team gets points for each mode and they are counted together. duel is sc:bw style team league where each player of each team plays, player is dropped when he loses a map and the loser is the team that runs out of players first
