No, that wasn't part of the QCon rules and it says clearly here that there is only 1 series in the finals :)

It doesn't clearly say that unfortunately. The format is double elim which, by default, is two best of X matches. As far as I can see it doesn't state anywhere on this post (sans comments) or on the webpage that it is 1x bo7 for the grand final. (Unless I've missed it, in which case I'm a fool.)

When I read about the map veto I had this in mind. 2x Bo7 with WB map veto seems incredibly unfair for the LB finalist, so you can understand my initial outrage.

I've been following quake tournaments for about 5 years now and in that time I've seen plenty of DE tourneys but the only time I've seen map advantage was in QCon'13 so I misunderstood. It doesn't help that challonge doesn't have an option 'simple' or 'full' DE.

It can't be that hard to imagine what would happen if they met in WB. (2:2 and a decider bringing us to the edge of our seats).

Quake is like RPS, often player A > B > C > A so WB winner may be there after getting lucky seed. So we want to see the whole picture. Don't take this from us.

Instead of WB or LB picking the map to remove, it could go like this :
WB picks a map to play
LB picks a map to play
WB picks a map to play
LB picks a map to play
WB picks a map to play
LB picks a map to play
The last map is not played and it ends as soon as WB has three victories or LB four.

I never understood why double-elim has to give some advantage to the wb-winner. I mean, if you came from lb you actually won one more game in total which i think is reason enough to not give the wb-winner an autowin.

I'm not sure the point of FPSpulse when ESR already provides the more relevant news of most arena FPS games & anyone interested in development simply needs to head to the UT forums or to any of those indie games forums....I don't think the main guys at Epic are going to look on FPSpulse for weapon/map/mod prototypes etc

ESR delivers in terms of having plenty of people on the site talking about arena fps, but as far as news goes, ESR seems to pick up on very little of it and often a few days after its happened unless its big stuff.

I also imagine FPSPulse will do more than just news too. Map making contests, tourneys, tournament calendars, video content, shit like that.

in terms of arena fps tournaments is there really need for a calendar? the indie shooters have no regular ones, UT has none & QL is the same time every week. ESR also has scheduled listings (a recent calendar...no need to see what's on 2 months down the line)

zoot's twitch already provides the video & would continue to provide the video without the need to go to pulse (I'm pretty sure they won't be wasting bandwidth/losing ad $$ hosting it locally)

I can see lots of cool stuff they could do with pulse in an environment that new gamers getting into arena fps would want to join. Tons of even old school arena fps guys think esr is a shithole full of fucktards.

The only real thing I see bad with ESR (besides the nazi admins deleting posts) is them not allowing people to mess around with adding features (while not doing it themselves)

I remember a couple years ago there was a big feature thread. I think it was in the admin forums but not sure how many of them got implemented in the end.

I dont have a problem with ESR, but it wouldnt reach a wider audience, has very few features and comments on very little of the arena fps news.

If fps pulse is more modern, more inviting to new players, has more news and has more events and facilities then its definitely welcome

ESR is fun, and its nice to have an active website that talks (whines?) about quake all day, but it falls short in a lot of areas

With arena fps there's not much of an audience to begin with. These are:
QL: ESR
UT: UT/BU forums (UN is long dead)
Reborn: vapourware
Reflex: Limited community? but probably it's own forums + ESR threads/news
Warsow: Limited community? but probably it's own forums + less ESR threads/news
Worxon: Limited community? but probably it's own forums + ESR threads/news

Other than Warsow/UT the other users will ultimately be subsets of the QL community

Probably the best way to generate more interest here would be:
- More Quake stuff (to keep current users coming back)
- More UT stuff (to try & pull in some of that community) -- but it'd need to be more than just basic news posts e.g. something they can't get off current forums...this is difficult considering the UT forums are the official ones & can get all updates/news first

tl;dr: The main thing ESR is missing is feature writers (e.g. how people spoke of carmac). Perhaps pulse will have them but they could have just as easily published through ESR. No doubt they'll still be doing ESR posts linking to pulse articles

The fact of the matter is that ESR has very few features, zero events, and talks about a very small amount of arena fps news. Its great if you play quake live, but thats about it.

I know we dont know what pulse is but I'm expecting them to be on top of the news for all the games, be doing events for them, covering tournaments, writing articles, making videos.

They wouldnt have to do much to outshine ESR in terms of coverage and content and I expect it to be in a form that more people will want to read, watch or sign up to.

I think the Cypher - Evil era is slowly coming to an end. You see the likes of Clawz and Base and many other guys starting to slowly take games off them now and it's only a matter of time before evil/cypher arent at the top anymore, unless they really pull something out of the bag.

People know evil's style, people know Cypher's style. Anyway that being said its a delicate balance between quake staying alive and people riding that skill curve to reach the 2500+ ELO mark.

People were saying exactly the same thing at least two years ago and nothing changed.

Personally, I think clawz and base have a long road in front of them to get to cypher/evil level.

It seems that clawz needs much more experience, because there's a big gap between his play in practice games and important tournament games. I think he just gets really nervous. He also uses this super-clutch style that makes wonders on a good day, but falls apart on an average day, when he even loses to guys he should definitely beat.

With base it's, at the moment, mostly question of motivation and constant training. He had his "starter enthusiasm" last tournament, but what will be his constant level when things get more regular?

It's like with Madball. After it was reported that he finally moved from laptop to desktop with 120+hz monitor the started playing like the next prodigy - outaiming evil in all direct fights and everybody, me included, were saying how it's the next top level player. But very soon, when "moving from crappy setup to good" effect faded, his level decreased drastically. Right now Madball is far from being even top4 contestant.

no i did not tbh because when u read ( Entry requirements: 2000+ Elo & 500 duels played/7 days played on account ) it easy to assume that ur elo need to be 2000+ at signups or start of the tourney :D but once u go to the website the entry requirements are clear :D

The 2v2 TDM tournamnet they did some months ago is something I'd like to see again. That was an invitational. But I hope 2v2 TDM will grow in general. The playerbase is so small, and getting a 4v4 team is pretty difficult nowadays. 2v2 could explode in popularity If more events were organized for it. Its great from a spectators point o view - easier to follow the teamplay elements involved than with 4v4. And as I said, Its so easy getting started in 2v2, the organisation of the teams goes smoother and we will see more teams than with 4v4.(If proper tournaments/leagues are organized on a regular basis)
