Hi all.

My nick is Wolven, I'm an old 3W CTFS player from Norway and I'm on a quest to resurrect CaptureStrike.

For a couple of months now I've been hosting a QL Attack & Defend server in Netherlands, with settings tweaked to be similar to the original Threewave CaptureStrike game mode.

* No LoadOut
* Self damage to armor
* Fall damage enabled
* Fast weapon switch

The server has gotten pretty popular and has been full most nights for quite a few weeks now. We've had to spawn a second server to accommodate everyone who's been wanting to play and there are new players joining our servers everyday.

In Europe we have two permanent QL servers running A&D with CTFS settings and if need be, we spawn more.

The permanent EU servers are:

3WAVE CaptureStrike.com located in the Netherlands (my server)
PQL CaptureStrike.com located in the Netherlands (my server)
J.A.Q.S located in Sweden (hosted by BompinG aka BlueScreeN)

If you're an old CTFS player from EU you might recognize the name J.A.Q.S, (Just Another Quake Server) which was hosting 3W CTFS for many years in Sweden.

I hope gojira_ and warning will be as fortunate as I have been in attracting players to their servers and that the US also will see an influx of CaptureStrike players.

You have. There are currently three servers running CaptureStrike settings in USA right now.

Filter for A&D and you should see them.

Not sure if you recall me, used to play as funnyb in teams like cR, and leto.

I remember you, or the nick at least. And I remember leto having a lot of good players. I always got owned by leto members...

Yeah we were good, me, nazgul, ElNino, Joey, rancid, TL, tearing shit up.

Oh yes. I particular remember ElNino, that guy laid waste to most players who stood in the way.

I vaguely remember playing a Cup match with my old clan, Clan Lame, against leto. Not sure if it was a jolt cup or what it was, but we got steam rolled and lost the match in record time.

Did you ever legitimately play for us under the alias of funnyb? =P I've forgotten how many alias you and Bjorn actually had.

Hah Diabz, long time. But yeah threewave was great overall, I do miss it.

Grappling was my favourite thing to do in quake and I guess it shows =P. I wasn't special with grapple though, I'd just had a lot of practise with it. Grapple had been totally underutilised in CCTF and because of that no one had an answer to how to beat it if used effectively. I played a TF-like mod called WFA before I moved to 3w. Competition had driven peoples skills with it to a very high level which just hadn't happened in 3wcctf.

Fixxy could of been as good as me if not better...if he hadn't been as lazy. As could ]lr[binzer! however *Kn* only needed one attacker to destroy everyone didn't it =P

I believe I've played some 3wave with 100/150 and self damage to armor until 50, but I don't find anything on the web. Maybe it was just a dream.

Perhaps you where playing CPMA CTFS

CTFS is based on the same concept than CTF, except it's played with rounds. Each round, a team has to defend his flag and the other has to steal the flag and to bring it back in his base.

There are no items/health/armor in CTFS, when you spawn you are 100/150 and full weapon.

Nope, I've only played 3wave on 3wave servers, at least I'm sure of that.

i played some 3w ctfs for clan [RW], but when i think about it, was quite the spamfest i recon, I even remember i played even some ctf with grapple, was it called 3wave cctf? :)

I think that it was even broadcasted with live commentary in jolt league or something similar :)

Yeah CCTF was amazing :) there was a ninemil cup after CCTF was totally dead where I played for spks, was great fun!

I'm glad that people are playing attack and defend but it's really dumb to call it capture strike when there's no air control. What made capture strike so much fun was having the movement of cpm clan arena with an actual objective.

From an interview with Michael "Casey" Goodhead, lead developer at Threewave Software:

HomeLAN - How did you come up with the new CaptureStrike multiplayer mode?

Casey - The popularity of the CounterStrike mod for Half-Life was pretty obvious to everybody in the team, and coming up with a way to capture some of the concepts of the gameplay seemed to be on the minds of most of us. The final product was cooked up thru a lot of brainstorming sessions amongst the whole team to find a good balance. While the game isn't really too much like CounterStrike, the name CaptureStrike was my idea as a blatant admittance that it was inspired by some elements of CounterStrike.

Air control or not, the game mode is still CaptureStrike in my view.

CaptureStrike is a fast paced blend of Capture the Flag, Rocket Arena, and CounterStrike. Teams take turns being Offence or Defense and battle until one team is dead, or the Offense team captures the flag.

I'm sure some PQL variants of CTFS will pop up soon. I plan to start hosing one more QL server in EU, which will be a PQL CTFS server. Many players request Air Control on my server, so I think it's about time to set one up.

That's the cpm version not 3wave

CTFS was a blast until, I think it was the 1.6 update. Where they did away with dmg/time for skill rating. After that you just had people playing like douches to exploit the formula to finish the match with highest skill rating.

You need Threewave 1.7 and some custom maps (ump, threewavemap pack, xmaps...)

I hope you all will join us in the CaptureStrike forum, (http://capturestrike.com/forum/) so we can get a CTFS community going across the Quakes (3W/CMPA/QL) The website still lacks polish, content and a lot of shit, but the forum works fine.

I'm hoping to arrange some tournaments and have a goal to get one for Quake Live up and running for EU players in April, but for that to happen we need players and teams/clans. Also I don't have the capacity to do it all alone, I need help organizing administering it all. So please join up and help me get this ball rolling.

Well i can say with confidence that A&D will have more populated servers within a month. I've had quite a few 4v4s and 5v5s although it is seldom atm. Soon, CA regs will have trouble deciding between CA and A&D. Should be a good change and for obvious reasons.

Due to a lot of request for ProMode settings by players on my A&D server, I've started hosting a ProMode version of it in addition.

The new server is hosted in EU (Amsterdam) under the name:

PQL CaptureStrike.com

The server is running the same settings as the Threewave (3W) server, with added Air Control and Ramp Jumping.
